The AK74M looks bad on so many levels. And why the hell did they bother bringing out an AKS74U?

Whats so bad about it PlasticMag? The stock looks slightly off but then the photo isn't great, the receiver cover I see is ribbed whereas the referance off worldguns shows it to not be so and the pistol grip looks off slightly but seeing as this is airsoft and needs to accomodate a motor its something I would let slide.

Of course if theres more wrong with it I'll be happy to be told.

On the AKSU front, I suppose when you've had something in development for months its a bit of a waste to just bin all the R+D done, unfortunately the Chinese cloners seem to be able to do it faster....still, there will be those that will buy it as its from a 'proper' manufacturer rather than one of the clone companies.*

* Note I'm not brand biased, as long as its functional and reliable and closely enough looks like what's its replicating I'll buy a gun that takes my interest from whoever makes it cheapest

It's a whole lot of little things on the AK74 that make me cringe. And, if they retained the naff hopup design of their previous AK74, I will go over to Taiwan and beat their heads in with DBoys rifles...

Whats so different about the ICS hops then? I know the TM uses a slider type, I've handled an ICS 74 before and if I recall it too was a sliding type.

I just hope they don't cheat again with the whole 'plastic wrapped in metal' construction, a friend of mine was on the verge of getting an ICS 74 after having used one to rent until I told him that....instead he's buying an M4 off me biggrin.gif

The hopup is attached to the front of the gun in a manner that practically guarantees that it will break. The Marui hopup unit screws near the nozzle portion of the gun, eliminating flex and ensuring that, during firing, nothing shifts. The ICS one is secured near the barrel end, allowing the hopup to flex when pressure is applied and the screw holes have a tendency to break, especially if they're even remotely overtightened, when the gun is fired.

That wood makes me sad. I would never buy an ICS gun (excpet a SIG 550).

Oh no, the cat's out of the bag now, the national security of every country in the Western world has been compromised because we all now know exactly what super secret armour carrier is used by a civilian shooting instructor who works for a company which founded itself as an alternative to paracord and duct tape.

mrk, watch your back dude, Chris Costa's beard is going to come and get you, I imagine in a similar way that Chuck Norris' might, and when it's done with you, Matt Johnson is going to make you a 750D Cordura bodybag (it's innovatively better than 500D and 1000D, naturally), in a khaki colour that's not quite green, not quite tan, not quite khaki. With grey trim, of course.

Plastimag: Where does the Hop unit break? I can sort of see where you are coming from but my take is that if you take it apart a lot then ok it may, but for normal use it shouldn't.

I took my ICS AK for a skirmish yesterday and I crawled, rolled and dived into a few sand ditches to a sudden and realisation that I forgot my AK was not a real steel. Not only was my body weight on the AK a few times, the entire gun was covered in sand, including its barrel and magazines.

I hesitated for a brief moment as I was just lining up a guy, and I fired a few rounds, first round cleared the barrel from sand and the subsequent rounds continued to shoot. I continued to use it for the rest of the day, and it fired fine.

I have seen VFC stamped steel receivers warp under pressure and I have to say the ICS did not do that at all with the same treatement.. I think a lot of the suspicion is based on perceived fear.

It breaks at the screw holes - the unit itself stays intact, but the collars fail, which means you need to buy a new part. I've worked on 4 now that have had the same problem.

Well if it's anything like their other AK's, the 74SU will shoot as half-assed as it looks... I wouldn't touch it witha 40 foot pole.

I can vouch for the terrible hop design, my ICS hop up broke and ive had a monumental amount of bother trying to fix it. Exactly in the manner which he says they will break too.

That and they do nothing even when they work... see my review for details, but they suck.

Interesting, mine shoots a fair distance with an upgrade spring, I was getting cans at 100ft pretty much 100% of the time. It was quite consistent.

Well I will open it up today to take a look at the beating I have given it yesterday.

Well actually the FPS was a lot more consistent on my ICS M4 hop than my Systema one that I have put in my ICS M4. But I can't be arsed changing it back.

I took apart my AK for a check, no breakages on the hop up, though sand was in my barrel, foregrip and mag well. Can someone give me a pic of where it may break?
