Hello everyone,

If anyone here happens to be at The University of Warwick a group of us are trying to set up an airsoft society at the university. We are going to be having a meeting this Thursday, 6th March, at 4pm in Meeting Room 2 in Union North, there is also a facebook event to help you remember.

By helping us start a society we will be given storage space in the Union for people living in halls to store their equipment, we will be given a budget with which we can buy equipment to rent out to new players and any specialist equipment that's usually too expensive for students to afford and we will be able to rent out Warwick Sport's minibuses to get us to and from skirmishes.

So any airsofters at The University of Warwick please turn up to this meeting and help get this started.

Thanks

Suicidal Snowman

P.S. To anyone who has had experience in setting up something like this any advice is welcome.

I Havnt any experience myself, but I remember there was someone trying to set up an inter university league/players association. Ill have a look see if I can find who it was.

Have you talked to your SU about this? I know in some unis theres been a lack of enthusiasm(sp?) from the funding side of things due to there bieng no trophys etc. But goodluck man, would be nice to hear how this all turns out.

Edit: Flumps had this idea, maybe it might come in handy rallying support wink.gif University Society UK League

And Swiper was interested in setting up a National Students Airsoft Association.

But goodluck man, would be nice to hear how this all turns out.

This is my brainchild so I guess its time to step in tongue.gif

I have had an informal talk with the societies officer, who semed wholly supportive.

After gaining sufficient interest the system at Warwick univeristy is that we are then invited to present and sell the society to a panel at the next societies federation meeting. If we present if properly it should get through. Apparently there have been precious little examples of societies being disallowed in the past. There is both a rifle club and paintball society after all.

University clubs already exist at about 10 universities in the country, and yes, a university league is being formed by flumps and swiper on ASCUK (flumps is a good mate of mine, although we are at different unis)

The student clubs are already documented on ASCUK, which has its own section for student players.

So, shouldnt be a worry smile.gif (Im rogue_sword on ASCUK btw, think I might get it changed on here for sake of simplicity)

Some clowns set up a Salford Airsoft Society at the University of Salford a few years back, when I was in my final year. Mainly so they could use the SAS acronym, for which we then promptly and roundly abused them.

Prior to this, Airsofting had been leeching from the Wargaming and Role-Playing Society as the previous Student Union Execs had been pretty anti-gun and so on.

Whether or not Salford still has an Airsofting society, or even WARP, I don't know. Might be worth a look.

Well, hopefully we dont qualify as clowns! There is a list of all the supposedly active student teams on ASCUK,k I dont know how accurate it is but it is continually being added to.

Yeah, that's very helpful.

But not everyone has access to ASCUK.

Since I knew the people behind the "SAS" at Salford, trust me, they're clowns. Anyone who thinks it's a good idea, or cool, to use the name of the most elite fighting unit in the world for a bunch of unfit students playing soldiers qualifies as clowns in my book...

The ex-SAS staff at Spectre Wargames wanted my team to bring them down to teach them some respect. Never happened though, we pretty much kept away from them after going to their first meeting and evaluating them as clowns.

But it's possible that if the society still exists, the current people involved might not be clowns. It's possible.

Well hopefully if advertised properly this uni league thing may be able to sort out a decent list. For those not at ASCUK, this list currently includes:

Swansea
Sheffield
Imperial College
Bradford
Worcester
Southhampton
Portsmouth
Aberystwyth

As you say, not everyone is on ASCUK, and not everyone is arsed to list themselves etc, so I'd imagine there are at least a few more. Its up to date though.

Good luck guys! I really hope this goes through; Warwick is my top choice for university next year, and I'd love to be able to get involved there!

I'll be going to Bournemouth Uni this year, and hopefully I'll be able to stir up some support for an Airsoft Society. However, societies in general aren't as popular as, say, Warwick, which I know has an excellent computing society among others.

It surprises me there isn't an airsoft society already, what with Ground Zero being <20 miles from BU campus.

Anyway, best of luck with this! Maybe I could learn from your example.

Well if this gets off the ground feel free to contact me. Ive gone for a much higher level of awareness and advertising than I think most uni teams have. I also think that we may be the first to be a position to have a fully fledged, union-supported society. At the end of the there are planty of airsofters, its just a case of finding them. Set out to do that in any way you can

Ill see the results of this today when i hold the interest meeting lol. hopefully there will be enough to inspire this to go further.

Well good news from the meeting, lots of interest and we've pretty much got the 30 signatures needed to start the society. Now comes the hard part of selling this to the societies federation.

Haha toady was ace. Next step is actually to form an exec, fill out the exec registration form, what you can expect from the society form, and constitution. THEN we present to society federation (which will definately require some powerpoint despite your hatred of it tongue.gif ). How does sunday afternoon sound for getting the forms done with the people who were interested in exec?

Well its been a while in the making but IT'S HERE!

University of Warwick Student's Union - Warwick AirSoc portal page

We are now a fully registered bona fide society. Looking forward to a great next term of airsoft at Warwick

Thanks to everyone who has made this possible - most notably my new Exec, the SU, Tom Lindsay (our SSDO) and Union staff.

We currently have a following of 30 and will be gaming mostly at Phoenix and/or Close Action next year.
