I believe its called 'dieseling', and it occurs mainly with new airguns. I had the HW45 once (called the Beeman 45 in the states), that thing scared the poop out of me. For the first few dozen shots the excess lube in the cylinder would ignite and the result was a massive muzzle flare upon firing- very very cool and realistic looking. These days i have the HW75 which is recoiless for target shooting, and the 'rws series 500+' for the same reason. I really wouldnt mind seeing one of those american 'shoot offs' when all the guys with machine guns/mini guns/ tank guns etc meet up and put on a big show...... *dribble*

  • 2 weeks later...

A few recent photos of me with a couple of my precious ones earlier this week. Excuse the quality, these are screencaps from a video shot with a cellphone. :D

Here's a radient smile while holding a suppressed 5.56 mm 14.5" carbine. The handguard is still the Madbull TALON. Works like a charm!

There's a shotgunner in me as well, although my skills are the least developed with that particular long arm. That magnum buckshot was used for vegetarian hunting: I did eat what was left of the melon, and PI... PETA should be happy, since no animals were harmed. There wasn't much to eat though. Featuring a Mossberg 590 military model.

Not so much hearing protection, IIRC, but noise pollution control. Might be both. Or maybe Alice is right and I'm thinking of some other European country (like the UK, maybe. Or Germany. Or somewhere).

EDIT: While I'm here... anyone have any suggestions for an inexpensive AR-15? Or would I be better off getting an AR-180/-180B?

Buy used..

I saw a milspec Colt going for 500 at the last gun show I was at. Only problem was that it was duracoated in woodland camo.

Sale you ever go without hearing protection with the shotgun outside? I was surprised when I heard how much less loud they were than other weapons. It's manageable every so often if you've been to enough concerts / loud parties, unlike rifles and handguns

Nothing like plinking in the woods on a nice day

I'm gonna get called out for this, but just drop the $1500 or so and get a Colt if you are looking for a serious AR. They have the best QC of any of the manufacturers. LMT is pretty good as well, you can get a lemon when it comes to BM, but they can be great too. If you just want a plinking rifle then it's hard to go wrong though TBH.

Plinking? I was thinking more along the lines of three-gun, patrol, and SHTF rifle, personally. :P I just don't want to break the bank to buy one (although I may just buy a Masada if it takes me that long to make up my mind).

EDIT: Colt A3 Rifle doesn't look too bad in terms of cost... but I could (hypothetically, in the near future) get a Masada with a shorter barrel, greater reliability, a folding stock with adjustable comb and length of pull... (so long as Magpul's prices don't pull an FS2000).

If you are not getting an AR and don't want to spend lots then I'd get a FAL, "the rifle for the classes" etc.

I'm kinda holding back on the Masada, I'm curious to see how MagPul will do making a whole weapon. I'm giving it the iPhone treatment for now

My opinion is that if you want an AR that works, you either need to spend lots on a Colt or LMT (some won't even do LMT, because some of their carrier groups arent magnetic particle inspected like Colt's are), get lucky with your tier-2 purchase (like BM etc.) or spend lots of money on things like LWRC piston systems to get a *suitcasey* one to work. The AR has so many inherent issues that you need a really well-made one to have a reliable weapon

IDK if Id trust one from a gun show for that much either. Probably a Colt receiver with franken-gun internals. Not much of an honor system at most of those deals. At least with the auction sites there is feedback and all

I wouldnt *fruitcage* around with a SHTF weapon, get something you can depend on, one way or another. There is a good chance the Masada will be great given MagPul's history, but who knows, they could have overstepped their capabilities. Not too many people have shot one yet

Wow, Finland is looking better and better..

Do you guys have to register supressors over there? or are they sold over the counter?

No registration, no age limits, no questions asked. Given how easy it is to manufacture a suppressor, it would be simply silly to ban them. People have various reasons for using them: Reduced noise pollution, reduced recoil, protecting the dog's hearing (if you're hunting with one), and so on.

Then again, the purchase permit for each firearm is almost 40 USD, so I wouldn't look at the 200 USD tax stamp as a huge expenditure either. As my collection continues to grow, I'd actually prefer to have free permits (or no registration) for the guns, even if it meant I'd pay 200 USD to register the two suppressors I have. Flipsides people, flipsides.

SilentScope: The general consensus among hobbyists over here (speaking as a Finn) is that you can't go wrong with the "ABC-trinity", which stands for Armalite, Bushmaster and Colt. Other trusted brands are Stag Arms, Oberland Arms, DPMS/Panther and Sabre Defence.

In the rare occasion there are any problems with the weapons, they are usually easily solved once they are traced. More often than not the problems stem from poorly manufactured magazines, or using ammunition with an incorrect pressure curve (too low port pressure) to cycle the action properly.

Getting a well working AR isn't the lottery some people make it sound. Mine is built from a Colt LE Carbine upper w. 14.5" barrel (basically it's exactly like the upper of an M4A1 right down to the feed ramps and full auto slide), ASA lower and Colt 6 pos. stock. The only "malfunction" I've had so far was when I was adjusting the gas system to a point where the bolt hold open barely catches the carrier.

The two ARs I've learned to shoot have been a BM and a Colt (w/ USGI green follower mags), and I've never seen either malfunction once. I've put a number of rounds through them since I was young, never used them in truly adverse conditions, but the owner cleans them hardly ever. The "worst" Ive seen put in them is Wolf, no reloads or anything like that. They are the weapons Ive grown up to trust. That said, my "experience" with other manufactures is basically limited to what Ive read as far as the AR goes.

So you've never seen anything dramatic like *beep* getting sheared-off the bolt? I suppose Im probably underestimating the AR. I guess if Jag gets a cheaper AR, and is able to put a couple thousand rounds through it without issue, then he'll have himself a worthy SHTF weapon

ETA: Sale have you seen any LaRue AR uppers make it over to Finland? Their tooling is jaw dropping

I think I may go Kalashnikov, then.

<snipity-snipity>

<eunuchy-eunuchy>

Or... maybe I will go with an ArmaLite. If I can get one of those new ones with the fixed front sight and A3 upper.... And the mid-length handguard, 16" bbl, and the longer gas tube. Or an AR-180B (unless I can find an AR-180 with Howa markings. Just because I'm awesome like that).
