By the way, you ever tried to control a 7.62NATO rifle in full auto? I have. It's well-night impossible - damn aiming point flies all over the place.
Quoted for truth. My former regiment here in Canada (Royal Winnipeg Rifles) was one of the last units issued C6's and C7's in the late 80's...I spent 2 years alternating between being an FN C2 squad support gunner (full auto L1 with bipod and 30 round mags) and the loader on a Karl Gustav 84mm crew. The ONLY way to control an FN (from the shoulder) on full auto was to limit yourself to 3-shot bursts, and even then operator fatigue meant that after the first mag was done you were pretty much only hitting the target on the first round - we joked that 2 and 3 were just to scare the pants off the enemy (7.62 FMJ has a REALLY distinct sound going overhead).
Prone and supported was a whole different story. The thing was pretty impressive once you set up in a defenseable position, as it had, in my experience, an effective range out to about 800m, and was absolutely deadly inside 250m. The only drawback was the mags - we were issued 5 X 30 rounds, carried in a "bra"-style chest rig, plus an additional 100 rounds of loose ammo in stripper clips. You could blow through that ammo real fast on full auto. Thankfully, the top-loading stripper clips made quick reloads possible under stress once your mags were dry.
Some people might also mention the muzzle volume as a drawback - deafeningly loud, especially on full auto. When I was in, they didn't often issue us with hearing protection except for big training exercises - our RSM's philosophy was that we wouldn't be wearing earplugs in combat, so get used to it....
