dance
Do I need to re-shim my mechbox when I replace my stock airsoft elite gears with systema ones? Thanks for the help, Dane Carder
Zephyranthes
Yes. Gears can have slight thickness differences.
dance
So, does that mean I should have ordered some shims along with my gears? Aww man...
Hissing_Sid
Unfortunately, yes. A big bag of Systema shims costs about $1.50 from WGC. Try a local dealer.
Hairy
Sid, Did you re-shim when you upgraded the Academy L-85 'box? And what shims dids you use - TM standard, or adjusted from scratch? I'm having problems with the TM vs. Academy fire selector, so I might end up transferring the FA-MAS innards...
Hissing_Sid
Redone from scratch, unfortunately, using previously mentioned Systema kit. I've still got squillions of them left over. If you mess with gearboxes regularly I'd highly recommend them. For what it's worth, here's how I do it... Empty all the bits out of the gearbox. Put a gear in and bung a couple of shims on one side of it. Tighten the gearbox back up. Check how tight the gear is. You now know the total thickness of shims required. When you rebuild the gun put half this thickness one side and half the other side. Repeat for all gears. Build up gearbox with all three gears in and check they're not tight. If they are tight it must be because (and this happens quite a bit) the the gearbox halves aren't quite symetrical. If this happens then you still know your original figure for total required shims is right so it's a matter of adjusting then so they're thicker one side and thinner the other side. As a rule you should try to get the sector gear set so it's shimmed equally on both sides and then work backwards from there. Finally, note that the intermediate gear can sometimes catch on the trigger-disconnect lever and might need to be shimmed to accomodate this. This has been a public service announcement by your local department of shimming. (Rather than being aimed specifically at Hairy. )
