Just noticed the Magpul rail protectors and thought this might help. I always thought it was a pain in the ass to slide down those Knight's rail panels. They always get caught on something and what about the top rail for free floating fore ends like the MRF or RASII. It’s a pain in the ass to remove just to get a cover on the top rail. Other than removing the front sight post and all the other neat gadets that's in style today, I'm not aware of any way to slap on a panel over the top. What if you have a long ass sniper RAS and need to cover the rail by the receiver. That little chunk of plastic panel needs to travel all the way down the rail...yes I'm lazy.

Also, $22 for one plastic panel? You high? Yes, you get the Knight's engravings and pride from having Knight's panels. While shopping around for product for my next project, my contact threw in a pair of Magpul XT Texture rail panels. These panels don't slide on...they fit on to the rail kind of like a Tupperware lid.

They can be cut to any length, have a much more solid rubbery texture, comes in four flavors, and cost $11 for the carbine length. Magpul "suggests" they can be cut with a pair of shears...I suggest NOT to use your mom's kitchen shears, but dad's hedge clippers (no, not really, but you need something a bit more heavy to cut).

Notice the XT panel is much more dull and matt finish. It's made from a rubbery material and grip much better than the plastic Knight's panel (them’s genuine Knight's panels). No, I'm no sucker that paid $44 for two panels...the unit came with two free panels. The size of the panel is identical to the Knight's.

The back. Since XT's don't slide on, they have ribs on the back that fall into the rail grooves. Also, no metal clip. But will they fit on airsoft rails? Yes they do...at least on G&P and GB-Tech rails.

Giddyup.

No I don't work for Magpul...I get no commision. Just thought that the product looked cooler and functioned a bit better. It's the choice of a new generation!

I like the texturized look rather than the plastic rails, gives it a more fitting appearance.

How did you get your M203 to mount like that with an RIS handgrip? Did you cut away the lower portion of the handgrip or something?

RIS lower grip is easily removable. That's how you access the battery.

These rail covers have been around for a few years now. I had them on my M4 RIS since late 2002. I get the Bushmaster brand since they have little Bushmaster logos on them, but it's the exact same rail cover. Other gun mfg's also have their version of these panels, like Colt and HK was giving their version away to LE at the 2003 Shot Show in Las Vegas (Which was related to the release fo the HK M4).

They are much more comfortable and secure then the plastic ones and do not get slippery when wet. I go with the smaller covers so I can take off bits to add things on a poartion of the rail.

The latest generation of rail panel which I first noticed (that doesn't mean they haven't been around longer, just the first I noticed) at the 2005 Shot Show are Tango Down Rail Covers which has an integrated remote switch for your tac lights, lasers, elec drum mags, etc.

The only problem with Tango Down covers is that they don't fit on carbine length MRF (both Samson and Troy) without some cutting. FYI, the pic is not the version with the integrated remote switch smile.gif
