I just got one of the Hurricane 551's and it does the job fine............. though someone will need to explain the differences between the models - unless it is just down to dimensions........
There isn't much difference between the various HurricanE RDS models. Technology wise they're all exactly the same and the fake NVG button switches between a green and red reticule color. The only apparent difference between the
HurricanE 551,
552, and
553 is that the 551 uses LR 44 batteries, the 552 uses AA batteries, and the 553 uses AAA batteries.
Externally, they have obvious aesthetic differences and the 553 features the QD/QR throw arms.
Real Eotech HoloSights use different batteries (511/551 = N batteries, 512/552 = AA batteries, and 553 uses CR123 batteries). The 51X series does not have the NVG mode that the 55X series has (NVG mode dims the reticule to the point that it's not visible to the naked eye, but is visible when used with NVGs). Also, the 5X1 vs. 5X2 vs. 553 series all have different specs as to waterproof depth and how long the batteries last.
As for this affecting Eotech... nope that ain't going to happen. Eotech's main customer base is real steel shooters, and especially all the huge military contracts they have. Airsoft buyers probably do not even constitute 1% of their overall sales per annum. Real steel shooters, like the members of AR15.com did extensive testing years back to see if replica RDS sights could withstand the recoil of real steel shooting. They quickly concluded the replica RDS break, and break fast under normal shooting conditions. Things have not changed since, and real steel shooters will not switch to something that doesn't perform as they need it to (in airsoft, we kinda accept that airsoft parts will break, real steel shooters do not have the same low expectations for their products). So this development simply won't affect Eotech's sales noticeably enough for them to even consider changing the price of their products. However, I'm sure they're not pleased by this from a copyright standpoint. As soon as these replicas start ending up on eBay (which is inevitable), and real steel shooters unsuspectingly buy them thinking that they got the real deal at a killer price (which is also inevitable), the buyers will complain to Eotech and Eotech will probably start some sort of legal action if they haven't already done so for past infractions by HurricanE and other ACM products.
I do find it amusing that HurricanE stands firm that they're not in copyright infringement and that they intend to persecute any ACM clones. Classic example of
"the pot calling the kettle black."
I'd love to see that court case play out. I also can't fathom why HurricanE would release this. You know they probably had to have 5000+ units made to keep costs down. Yes, people will buy it... initially. But once the ACM clone comes out (which has already been announced as an imminent release) HurricanE's sales will plummet just as they did when the same thing happened with their 551 and 552 replicas.
