They're doing both! Look at the other news thread on upcoming Chinese AEGs, and you'll see that there will be a Chinese Magpul Masada, AKM, a couple Barrets, an M60 (Vietnam version), and M60E4 in the coming months.
Funny, on ASR when that thread came out, a few guys were complaining about this newfound originality in Chinese gun cloning, because now n00bs can own what used to be "sacred" weapons! I guess you really can't please all of the people all of the time... It's funny how these tiny M4's are always labeled "PMC." The shortest M4's I've seen pictures of in real use recently have 10.5" barrels. PMC? Pfffft...
