TFGW M14 GBB

Greetings, Gentlemen. I come here, again, to bring you one of my ideas which were probably better off kept inside my little brain.

First, I shall set up the equation which will be being used for the duration of this project...

Silly? Perhaps. But the idea was kicking around and I couldn't suppress it any longer. My idea was to use a Marui-based GBB as the action inside an M14 body, and to put a long tightbore in the GBB, as with gas guns, a longer, tighter barrel generates a higher velocity. (It's science!) So a mid-length tightbore (VSR, preferably), modified to fit the action, coupled with a new hopup, would, hopefully, provide the FPS and accuracy I am looking for.

I intend to use this rifle as a counter-sniper/battle rifle.

While doing an order for some friends, I decided to pick up an ARMY detonics GBB for the project's action. Now, if you know me, you would know how much I detest Chinese guns. However, I do paint houses for money, so I can't always afford a Marui GBB to throw at a whim. The Detonics being only $35, and me hearing good things about it, seemed like a good choice.

I then began tracking down an M14 for the body. I thought the "TSD" M14 would be a great choice. The bolt not rotating made it simpler to mate with a GBB, and being primarily plastic makes it easier to work with. I soon found a beaten up old TSD springer on ASF, and pounced on it. $20 later, it was time to begin.

First thing to do is, of course, disassemble the M14.

IMG_7106.jpg

Confused about disassembling these chinese clamshell guns? Ancient chinese secret: Unscrew everything.

Eventually we get inside and are greeted with the piles of rust that are the weapon's weights. (One fell out and hit my bed and jeans, leaving horrible red lines of pure rust. ugh.) There are plenty of plastic "ribs" that need to be cut out to make room for the GBB. Thankfully, there are forward barrel supports. This is a very good thing, as the rearmost ones are going to be leaving.

I don't have a very long tightbore at the moment, so this Marui G-SPEC barrel will have to do for now. Some dremeling later, it mates with the GBB mechanism.

More to come.

Still to do:

Lots.

You're awesome.

It's almost as if the detonics was made for this kind of thing. Great job so far, and brilliant idea!

Thanks, mate! Yeah, it's small and snappy, seems like it will fit into most anything. It also handles the added weight of the M14 bolt quite well, as you can see here in my highly scientific test;

I actually had the idea for other guns before I decided on the M14. Was considering putting it into the body of that old Maruzen AUG from my last project before I decided the M14 would be infinitely better.

Lol, hey, we both thought of it without saying a word of it to one another.

I'm just quicker, lol.

Weird...

I had the same idea for the Detonics, but for a different 7.62 caliber firearm.

Anyway, that's a plastic Detonics, right?

Can't wait to see how this one comes together.

:thumbs-up:

Give me moar pickchoorz pleaz.

Ben.

'k.

Been doing a lot of work on it without time to make updates, sorry.

One of the big problems was dremeling out the body and fitting the gun in place securely. If it's not securely in its place, cycling gets sloppy.

Then, when I took the rear sight off the detonics, I saw a perfect connection point between the bolt and slide. You see, under the rear sight, the metal BBU cage is exposed. There is a small hole on the top, exposed perfectly through the slide. I decided it would be a great idea to tap out this hole for 6-32 threads, and use that as my connection point.

Tappin'

Finished! Beautiful treads!

Sorry I didn't take many more pictures, I just sorta worked a lot without the camera. Anyway, I cut and ground away a lot of the body to give the gun plenty of room to cycle well. I also took a metal SR25 mag shell and used that as the faux magazine, which I greatly prefer to the plastic springer mag.

You can also see my trigger system here. Some scrap metal served as an elongated fulcrum on the springer's sear, and I used a scrap metal malleable bar which I bent into shape and bonded between the trigger and sear.

Here, you can see it cycling and locking on the last round. (This video was taken before I added the trigger mechanism)

You may be wondering about the magazines. I decided to have the large 7,62 magazine simply be a faux mag, and use 1911 mags instead. This reduces the bulk of the loadout, as well as keeping the weapon compatible with all Marui 1911 mags. The mag release is a piece of the faux magazine cut out and then bonded to the pistol's mag release inside the gun. So, when you press on that section of the faux magazine, the real magazine is released, as you can observe here;

(By the way, I decided to give the gun a few coats of paint, Like it?)

Replacing the weights...

All together:

You could, I suppose, call it done at this point. Although there are still a few kinks I would like to iron out. I'd also like to add a longer, tighter barrel. (If anyone has a VSR tightbore they'd like to sell, please contact me.)

If you all would like, I'll take some videos of the thing shooting all together later.

What do you all think?

That's pretty damn impressive.

Is it using the stock detonics hop?

Thanks, mate!

Naw, I don't trust chinese hops. I swapped it out for a Marui one.

Awesome project. Although it would of been better if the the whole M14 mag was a mag instead of a shell but then again that would involve making a new design and gun :\ Great idea though.

Thanks a lot, man. I avoided the M14 mag thing because using 1911 mags decreases the bulkiness of the associated loadout. With the 1911 mags, the operator can carry tons of mags, compared to like 4 M14 sized mags, as well as the fact that the Marui 1911 mag is very common, meaning one can, perhaps, borrow mags from friends on the field in a pinch.

:o I want one. What's the recoil like on it?

Also, ever considered setting up a production line of these? There have to be a lot of people willing to buy one.

Recoil is a bit more than a 1911 pistol due to the added weight of the bolt, also, the fact that you hold the weapon up to your shoulder significantly increases the "felt" recoil. All that said, it is still nothing like a Sun Project or Escort.

If people are REALLY interested in these, I suppose I could make them "to-order." The low cost of the parts associated and the quick turnaround time, it would be very affordable, too. (I suppose now that I know exactly what to do, I could probably pump these out in a day or two, and with higher quality.)

Due to the nature of the system, I could also specialize it to what you need. IE, if you wanted a high-V "Sniper" weapon, I could do the full-length model with a 6,02mm barrel and powerup bulb, which I estimate could produce nicely over 500FPS. I think this one here will produce 350-400FPS on propane with a ,2g BB. This is because I used a pretty short barrel (Significantly shorter than the outer barrel) and a stock bore and bulb. Due to my experiences with the systems associated, I could probably fine tune the velocity to user preference (I think, depending on the barrel and bulb I install, it would produce FPS of 350-600, depending on your choice of parts. I suppose I could also paint it to your spec.

If you're interested, PM me. We can talk about what you want and how I can do it.

mmmmmmmm M14 blowback...

:o You've got a frickin' swimming pool?!

And that looks AWESOME!

Is there room in that SR25 mag for a Co2 coversion, do you reckon?

What's the quality like on that M14 shell you used?

Ben.

Thanks, man!

Lol, everyone in this part of Florida has a pool. It's hard to find a house without one.

Hmmm.. Co2 conversion? By this, do you mean using the large Co2 caplet magazines, or tapping for ext. air?

The M14 shell was perfect for this build. It's pretty solid. I don't mind it at all.

I would imagine Co2 bulbs, seeing as you're using low-capacity pistol mags, and not AEG hi-caps... Thus this could be turned into a great DMR, with British-friendly FPS :D

Ben.

Hmmm.. With barrel ventilation, I think we could get Brit friendly FPS.

and, with the Co2 bulb mags that can be used in the KJW 1911, i think they'd fit into the mag just fine.

I could definitely make a fullauto one, it's pretty easy. Just chop the sear. However, as Donut said, being selective fire would be very hard.

Like I said earlier, if anyone is really interested in having one, shoot me a PM.
