Candidates qualified on the semi-automatic version of the M16A1 service rifle (real steel), they ran patrols, stood fire watch, and defended a hilltop base against attacks. Airsoft, pyrotechnics and blank fire were used to simulate combat conditions, several 1/2 pound charges startled candidates out of an easy night's watch to defend their positions. Working PRC 77 radios were used to communicate between the teams in the field and base. A video will be forthcoming in the months ahead.
BRS is intended to be small. Only three candidates made it to graduation, and they did it in style wearing the MCHA official summer uniform. Graduates received a ribbon as well as a certificate of completion. The honor graduate, Gary Wright of Nebraska, received a plaque in addition to his ribbons.
The MCHA will continue to host BRS as well as a new Tactical Assault School (TAS) in June 2010. Both schools are Vietnam reenactment focused. TAS will instruct candidates on the tactics involved in a Marine Reaction Force. Hit hard, hit fast.
BRS is limited to 12 participants, TAS is limited to 35 candidates. If you are interested in taking "all the way" then email s3@mycorps.us for more information.
