Leon the Professional - Sniper Rifle Build

T0p Sp!N

Recommended Posts

I remember seeing this build a while back:

http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=118301

I decided to try this myself when I eventually acquired an AR type airsoft piece.

When GBBRs caught on and I got an AGM M4, I decided to give this project a go.

A screenshot:

So far:

gallery_25415_1789_77966.jpg

To do:

-(Near) Correct sized barrel (~16")

-Shaved gas block front sight

-Drill hole in handguard for sling/bipod stud

-VN type short mag

-A more accurate looking scope (3-9x40)

-Scope covers and rings

-Stock or Receiver shaved for proper fit

-M16 buffer spring

Notes:

-The buffer tube is a real steel M16 length tube.

Since the AGM GBBRs use a different buffer tube threading from both RS and WA tubes, I had to hand re-thread my own.

For anyone who's wondering, I believe the threading is M29x1.5.

-The handguard is a JBU free floating handguard for AEGs. There is a bit of a gap now, but when I get a 16" barrel, there should be a tighter fit.

-I plan on getting a leather case for it, one like in the movie. I also plan on eventually upgrading the hopup and installing a burst trigger kit.

-The only upgrade done to the GBBR so far is that an NPAS has been installed.

Comments, questions? Let me know.

-Thanks

That is coming along very nicely T0p SP!N, I look forward to more pictures as the build progresses!

Are you planning on copying the set up of the carry case aswell?

Biscuit

Yep.

Have to find some grey material (carpet perhaps?) and some belts with plastic buckles.

The case will be done last, though, after the rifle.

That is nice. Would be great to see it from a few more angles but I like it quite alot. Simple yet different and distinctive.

I'll try and get some more pics soon.

Cheers,

-T.S.

Edit:

Can't edit my first post, but I just wanted to add that the stock I used is a real steel Bell and Carlson AR-15 thumbhole stock.

I also plan on buying a short suppressor or getting one machined, as the only one I have is quite large.

And a link with more data on this rifle from IMFDB:

Is it a real bell and carlson? That's an amazing price! I've been trying to do the same build as you, but with a WE m4 base. Was it from an ebay store that might have more, or just an individual seller?

Yes, it's a real Bell and Carlson stock. I bought it from an individual seller's auction.

I was surprised that I got it at that price as well.

I think you can get a B&C stock like this for around $70 if you look around enough. That's the lowest I've seen some of them go (used) on various classifieds sites and discussion boards (AR15.com, for example).

-As for updates, it may be a while before I do anything further as I lack spare cash and time.

I plan to buy a Burris scope along with Weaver See-Thru type rings and Butler Creek covers.

This should cost ~$80 shipped or less.

I also plan to get the three piece MIC barrel set and a low profile gas block. This should run about $50 before shipping (local retailers don't seem to stock these items).

Looks really good any info on the specs

I don't have any accurate specs (no chrono yet), but the only major upgrade is that an NPAS is installed, so FPS is variable.

Rof (roughly by ear) seems to be about 600rpm or lower on propane.

-No major updates so far, but I have ordered some parts:

-Prowin VN mags (x2)

-Weaver See-thru scope rings

-Low profile gas block (will need some modification to accept the sling loop)

-Short suppressor

Also, I'm looking for a case that looks the part, but I think I might have one custom made if it won't cost too much.

If anyone knows someone that can do leather and wood hard cases, PM me.

Will you have a little girl operating your rifle as well?

Unfortunately, no. I don't think I'm allowed to for many reasons...

And I don't think I'll attempt to do a Mathilda impression either.

I have thought of doing a Leon getup, though, as it's simple enough.

A bit of a hiatus taken on my part, as there have been a lot of pressing matters that had to be dealt with, but they seem to be sorted for now. Only have a bit of progress to report, really, but I'm nearing basic completion.

I already have a suppressor, a shaved gas block/front sight, 2 VN mags, Weaver see-thru scope mounts, and a 3.5-10x-45mm scope.

I also have a ~16" barrel on order which means I will now (finally) be able to drill a hole in the handguard and properly attach the Harris-style bipod.

So, all that I need to get are scope covers.

I still have to fit the sling to the gas block (not all that necessary), drill the hole for the bipod (as a fore mentioned), and sand/grind part of the receiver so the stock fits correctly.

Also, the buffer seems to jam when cycling in the 'M16'/long-type buffer tube, so the buffer might need some grinding or replacement with the M16 type buffer (thinner, metal, and longer). I think this might also mean I have to replace the spring, but I will see how modifying the existing buffer goes.

I'll get more pics when I can and definitely will when I have all the parts together.

-Some other thoughts :

Western Arms recently released replica Leon the Professional M9s, but, alas, at quite a high price for me.

I wish they would sell the compensator and suppressor separately. Maybe if I or someone asked them nicely...

Or maybe *wince* someone will clone it...

Wishful thinking aside and arm-and-a-leg pricing aside, if I really wanted to bite the bullet and get at least one Leon Beretta (~<$500), I would also have to consider possibly getting a Zeta Labs Mosin Nagant (~$400) (both replicas I've wanted for a while)...

Also, I've been thinking about getting the same plant Leon had in the movie (an aglaonema, I believe), because having a house plant would be nice, I guess...

Anyway, I will have updates again in about a week or two, as that is how long the barrel will take to arrive.

Cheers,

-T.S.

Finished! (Externally, at least.)

gallery_25415_1789_906764.jpg

gallery_25415_1789_1113760.jpg

I found out that the buffer's spring is getting caught on an uneven section on the lip of the buffer tube.

I think a little bit of grinding and even sanding should remedy this, but this problem has only happened when manually cocking the bolt. I haven't got to cycle/shoot this piece 'dry' or 'live' yet, but I'm hoping to soon.

Finally got the multi-length barrel. It allowed for the handguard to tighten closer to the receiver with virtually less space.

I was then also able to drill the hole for the sling stud to attach the Harris bipod. I believe the the hole was about 5/16 in. I thought I messed up when I misaligned the pilot hole I drilled. I was using a hand held drill due to the chuck in my drill press breaking. I was able to make a better placed final hole using a titanium oxide step drill bit. The drilling ability and chip size produced by the step bits really surprised me and saved me from having to possibly get a new hand guard...

The scope I purchased is a Bushnell Sportview 3.5-10x45mm. I have reason believe that this is pretty accurate scope to the one used in the film. If you have the chance to see the movie in high resolution, you can see that the scope have a 'B' Bushnell scope on its right side and a golden, round 'Quality Assurance' sticker on the bottom. I think I'll post screenshots of this when I get the chance.

Also, as I've said before, the last minor external element left out is the front sling loop, but I'll do that when I can get around to it.

I'm not too bothered by it being left out for now.

Next, I will be trying to replicate the carrying case, but finding just the right one will take some work (capital and time searching for one with the right dimensions).

For now, I think I will get a take-down length carrying case.

I'll also get more pics soon.

Wow, great work! Really nice looking rifle.

Nice work mate, not sure if I like the look or not :) its just different in an odd but good way.

Thanks.

I know what you mean. AR15s (in the 5.56 variety, at least) aren't what most would choose or expect to be a DMR.

~7.62/.30+ seems more feasible.

Also, you don't see a lot of thumbhole stocks on AR type rifles.

I'll post a build list of the project and a few reference screenshots in a bit (if anyone's interested).

How long is that outer barrel mate? It looks a little bit too long from what I can tell. Standard carbine is 14.5, standard civi carbine is 16" as used in the film - yours looks more like about 18".

Yes, good eye.

With all the segments attached, it's about 17.5". The shortest segment is about 3", though.

I think I could make a 1.5" barrel segment. I could get a machine shop to make an unfinished part out of aluminum and I could thread it myself. It wouldn't even need to necessarily be painted, as it would be hidden by the handguard.

It's times like this I wish I had a lathe, heh heh...

Another detail to add to the list , I suppose (overlooked on my part, oops).

Thanks for the comment,

-T.S.

-And just a quick parts run-down to make a neat list:

+ AGM GBB M4

+ JBU FF handguard

+ (LCW) 3 piece barrel

+ King Arms Harris bipod

+ ProWin VN mag (x2)

+ M16 length buffer tube (real steel, re-threading required, use 29x1.5mm die)

+ Bell & Carlson AR15 thumbhole stock (real steel)

+ Bushnell Sportview 3.5-10x40mm scope

+ Weaver See-Thru scope mounts

+ Element NPAS

+ 5KU Low Profile gasblock

+ Hornbill short 'silencer'

+ Butler Creek flip-open scope covers (older logo)

-And a thought on the case:

I think the dimensions should be around 23" x 12" x 6" for the case, give or take slight difference in the length or width. The case in the film seem to be slightly less wide or longer than these dimensions. I think I'll have to do a rough cardboard mock-up before buying a nice, yet expensive leather case for it.

looking great and you beat me to making a gbbr of the gun :P , but get the correct barrel it does just look to long , also why did you go with that front sight and not a cut down jobby?

Yours came out great, though. It inspired me a bit to make one of my own.

At the time, I misplaced my Dremel, so chopping and grinding the front sight seemed like it would be a pain. Also, I'd have to paint the ground area and I'm all out of black paint.

I should get around to buying a can of flat black paint or maybe some epoxy coating, like Aluma-Hyde.

i hope you have better look with the case, i gave up in the end and broke the rifle up :(

Aw, that's a shame to hear.

dont bushmaster sell a RS sight thats cut down ? ( going back years here :P )

Hmmm... I think RS front sights use pins that lock into grooves in the barrel though, so slight modification to the barrel might be needed.

Also, I'll have to check if the barrel I'm using is the same diameter as RS specs.

Some things to look into and ponder about then.

Thanks for that,

-T.S.
