Great, now we'll have to deal with the "super9 vs m4 vs star m249" posts.

"contrsuctive metal parts", which means it'll be mostly plastic, no thanks.

Actually, a plastic gearbox would probably be stronger than the pot-metal gearboxes we have today. If they make them from the right kind of plastic that is.

I'll buy one, i'm so insanely tired of my TOP/PGC minimi.

Yeah, if it's a decent price, I'll probably end up (eventually) getting one. No more than about $500 though...

Strange how they make weapon parts from plastic if they can't handle energy levels higher than 1-2 joules. I highly doubt they will make the gearbox from ABS... There are plastics that are much stronger than pot-metal.

If a polycarbonate piston can take 4#0 fps, why wouldn't a gearbox casing made from the same material stand up to the abuse? I mean, The gearbox shell has a quite substantial thickness compared to a piston, and the load of the piston hitting the sylinder head would be distributed over a much larger area than the load placed on the teeth of the piston.

As long as the gears, bushings and such things remain the same as in normal AEG's, I don't think a plastic gearbox will have problems compared to normal pot-metal boxes. Especially when you consider how bulky the gearbox can be in a MINIMI compared to the V2/V3 gearboxes.

If you think about it: how long do you think a pot-metal piston would last?

One thing that would worry me a bit is heat. In a minimi, when shooting longer bursts, a certain amount of heat is created. Plastic doesn't transfer heat as well as pot-metal.

Yes, they could use those magical plastics, but with the "lightwieght and cheap" additude they are so proudly displaying, I highly doubt they will.

Indeed, I was thinking about the heat issue as well. I've heard of upgraded TOP M249s being used for 400-500 round "bursts" of sustained fire. I wonder how well this plastic gearbox will handle that, if at all huh.gif
