i want to include some basic rules for them, to get em going, so post any suggestions, and ill formulate a couple of lists, then post them, and we can vote on it.

then ill send those rules to new members. in theroy if i got time, i should be able to "try" to get the message out to all new people.... hope it works, so just post your suggestions, thanks

k dont see why it matters. ive been on here long enough to be able to show the new people the basics. im not proffesing to be ye old meber, just old enough to help out. I dont see why being nice to new members is bad thing. however if people have a serious reason why i shouldnt do this, im all ears. until then, whatever...

k, first i didn't realize we had someone join every two hours, figured it would be more around 10 15 users a day, and secondly gene, i just though it would be cool to get a welcome message. I know it was awesome when i got one. made me feel welcome

just wanted to pass on the that feeling

umm nooo that not at all what im doing. cheack my reply to the music thread. i know myplace on this forums, and i assure you i know im not even halfway cool enough to be a mod. my status is barly anything. im still a noob. i know that completly, and im not ashamed to admit that.

i can see how you could assume thats what im trying to do, ill watch myself.

however, i still stand by the fact that that would be a nice thing to do

case and point: no im not trying to be a mod

You don't become a mod on a basis of 'coolness'. You become a mod if you can hack it, if you use proper grammar (hint, hint), and if you have a good knowledge of what the hell is going on. None of which you can do.

And I said at least two every hour, not one every two hours.

Akfrog, it would be a nice thing to do, and it is possible to generate a automatic welcome message from the server to send to the newly joined members, but it seems un-necessary, and the automatically generated messages usually gets ignored anyways. You could pitch this idea to Arnie if you want, and he might just do it when he has some time or coffee. ;)

If you would like to personally welcome every (or most if you can't catch all) of the new members, feel free to do so. You should be able to find any relevent advice and suggestions in the pinned threads in each section, and the forum rules, or the numerous newbie introducing themselves threads. Just don't tell them to do anything that's against the rules, and if you are still not sure what is against the rules, you might want to read the rules over some more.

I am not sure what effect such an email will have on the new members. Some might find it pleasant while others might find it annoying, but you can try to do it for a while, and tell us about it.

AK frog what you have to remember is while some people may be new to the site they'll probably be quite experienced at forums and the internet.

For example if when I'd first joined up you'd have PM'd me with the rules I would have replyed something along the lines of "Who the *fruitcage* are you to tell me the rules, you've only been on here half an hour and I am perfectly able to find the rules myself".

Why don't you just PM them the rules we already have on the site, which people are supposed to look at before they join.

It would be just as annoying, but much more useful.

Besides, if they don't read the rules upon entering the site, what makes you think they're going to take note of what you have to say?

Like Razer said, you'll end up insulting/annoying more people than helping, and the people you might be helping don't need to be helped, and the people who would get annoyed can't be helped anyway.

See what I'm betting at?

Must admit, an automatically generated PM sent to newbs which contained a bunch of links to stickes etc AND ALSO EXPLAINED WHAT WAS IN THOSE STICKIES might not be a bad idea.

fine, that would be a great idea too, viper, i think that comment was uncalled for, but if thats your opinion, fine with me. its not my job to defend myelf from you guys, and i find it unneccisary to care what you personally feel about me. I kmow exactly who i am, and why i post what post.

if you dont care for it, fine by me... your opinion isnt worth worrying myself about.

i persoanally though it would be a good idea. but if people feel this strongly against it. thats their own problem. I shall frefrain.

so anyways this topic has been run into the ground. I have nothing more to say about it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow, sorry for this semi-necro here...

I must agree with xRAZERx on this one. I wouldn't want some strange guy PMing me with a bunch of rules and stuff when I first get on. You have to remember that most of the people that join don't just google the word "airsoft" find Arnies and join up on the spot. I would have to say over 90% of them at least read through some threads first and get a feel for the layout before they join. There have been many instances when a new member come on and posts something saying " I've been hanging around here and only just become a member...blah blah blah"

The fact of the matter is that it is nice addition and might help some people, but most of the new members would just delete the message without even opening it. I know everytime I have made new Email accounts on Yahoo and Gmail that I always have erased the "welcome" message" that pops up as soon as you log it.

Little hint of advice for the real new members....

1) Stay out of Hissing Sids way and don't ask him stupid questions

2) Always search before posting anything

3) Use correct grammar (especially around Hissing Sid) ;)

4) Search

5) Even if you are a n00b, don't act like it. Ask sensible questions, preferably ones that you can't answer or figure out yourself given you take a freaking second to use that brain of yours

6) Learn the code formats for things like italics, bold, and smiles

7) Use spell checker!

8) Don't make other members mad, especially mods and Forum Regulars like myself and Hissing Sid :D. What the mods say goes and don't try to convince them you are right. Because you are not!

9) Always research things on Google or Altavista before posting. Search Arnies and then search the web. There are many airsoft forums out there and they are probably on google. Try it. It Works. If you don't find your answer from looking on a search engine then and only then may you post something like "Wot am bestest gun".

**If used properly, #9 may prevent the "wot an bestest gun" genre of posting all together....;)

Have a nice day

~P
