Dead58
Ive seen many people just add the link for a picture from a site - this is called hotlinking and is actually illegal (in breach of your ISP's terms of service), and could cause you to use your internet connection. http://www.answers.com/hotlinking To avoid losing your internet connection use must use a free upload site such as : www.tinypic.com www.putfile.com www.imageshack.us www.photobucket.com This should see you through, sites like tinypic will give you the etc with the image so you copy and paste it into it. It takes 30 seconds more and saves a lot of hassle for you and the website you are stealing bandwith from. {Mods}, if you want to add this to the top bit, or move the topic, feel free to do so. letterbomb
Pinage? I think yes. Very recently joining Photo bucket i have to say its very easy and simple to use.
PariahWolf
Can I also suggest that you resize the image before you post them. For instance if you have a pic of you in the middle then try to cut out the massive amount of ###### round the outside so we do not have to look at your lovely kitchen or something. Also for bigger pictures just resize them we still have 56kers on here so think please. Cheers, Pariah
Hissing_Sid
yadda...yadda...yadda {Mods}, if you want to add this to the top bit, or move the topic, feel free to do so. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm sure they will if they want to, regardless of you giving your permission. I have to say, if there isn't a guide to posting images somewhere then there should be. Stuff like a link to the Image Resizer powertool would be nice as would reminding people to save images as JPGs rather than BMPs. I'd also suggest 800x600 as the maximum size for posted pictures and only posting links to larger pictures. Finally, a note to say that using hot-links is to be avoided wherever possible could be included.

Dead58
Well its in there now Use Paint or any other image program, and click resize image under "edit" or a similar drop down menu. Then resize it to a reasonable size for the forum!
whiskey_sk
I also resize to 800x600. What is really annoying though is people not deleting the pics when they quote the original post containing the pics in their reply...
Hissing_Sid
It should be avoided full stop <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yawn! So should smoking, drinking, swearing, over-eating, casual sex and driving too fast. Oddly enough these are some of the most pleasurable things in life. FWIW, THIS link will allow you to download the MS Image resizer powertoy directly from THIS web page.

Arnie
Topic pruned and reopened. I believe that the topic was either deleted in error or because of the spam that appeared on it. Either way, it's back now. AFAIK hotlinking as is isn't illegal or in breach of any AUP ot ToS. However linking simply to run up bandwidth charges or in some other malicious way could be considered to be in breach of an AUP and possibly unlawful. There's also a gallery on site here that people can upload their images into instead of posting a link. That auto-resizes stuff to under 800x800px too.

Arnie
If people want to discuss hotlinking in off-topic they can.. it's not going to cause a problem so long as it's civil.
Shao14
Linking a picture from sites like photobucket is not hotlinking anymore? I couldn't care less where you link your pictures from, but make sure you link your own pictures, or you are risking violating some copyright laws, or the real owner could simply change the source link so your link won't work anymore (it's been done quite often). One thing that mildly annoys me is that I can't use the img tag to insert a picture from my gallery on this site because it says the link is dynamic or something.
Arnie
Like this? Go to your gallery, go to the page with the image on you want, then (if you're in Firefox right click and select "view image", then copy the URL and use that). In IE, right click the image and select properties, then copy the url from there.

Your right But its annoying for the people who host these images Cheers for the tips on the gallery - didnt know about that that could make life a bit easier. It shoulda stayed dead. Whats your problem with me? I would prefer you to take any problems with me to PM's.

Edit: Hmm.. actually, I am not sure what I did wrong before, but I had never got it to work until now. I was probably just copying the URL in the address bar instead of the image file location or something.

I suspect someone has already pointed out that Hotlinking isn't illegal so I will carry on doing it, if sites really don't want you to do it they will make it so an amusing/pornographic image comes up when you do so. And here you go, a picture that i feel fits this post and one that I've hotlinked.
Dead58
If you dont care why post then? Just dont bother yourself in the future. I ran a site for a short while where many people were hotlinking off it, i had to shut it down because of the extra bandwith costs. I thought that since i saw quite a few people doing it, i would point out about the costs you are burdening someone else with, and if it is done malicously - it is illegal. Obviously then, if this is a forum about toy guns, we should be removing all the jokes, the puzzles, the games and so on but its more than that.

Arnie
It's actually very easy to stop people from linking to images remotely. Look up the .htaccess calls, many sites and ISPs support the redirect and rewrite calls for this very reason.
