What role does a gun like this fill? I can understand a CAR-15, I can understand the 9mm Armalite, but I cant understand what the patriot is for.

(EDIT)
Oops, sorry didnt know this belonged here, guess itd make sense.

it's for getting assault rifle firepower in a pistol/ smg package. it's easilly conceilable, and useable by tank or helicopter crews. it's not a battle rifle or assault rifle like the M4 or M16. it's designed for CQC or emergency use. i think.

so basically its an m4 minus the stock? That makes sense, theres things that an m4 without a stock can do that a car15 cant then?

it is a m16/m4/whatever, they're all hideous, chopped to the extreme to be as compact as possible. i compare it to the MP5K in terms of use.

Anyone ever seen "Romeo Must Die"? At the end during the meeting, when it goes south, that guy who's holding a breif case hits a button, the case falls away, and the handle is connected to the reciever rail of a Patriot?

That's a cool use for it :P Such a good movie...

It's also in one of the Tom Clancy movies. The one where Willam Dafoe actually lives through the end of the movie.

A semi automatic AR15-pistol can be legally owned by a civilian, in the US, without a licence.

AFAIK a weapon with a buttstock is considered as a rifle in the USA and any rifle with a shorter barrel than 16" requires a firearms licence. But a weapon without a buttstock is considered as a pistol and therefore doesn't require the same kind of licence (even if the weapon has a short barrel).

that isn't entirely true. US firearms law is really very confusing under the surface. the gun's classification depends on how the manufacturer classed the reciever of the weapon. So, if i take an AR-15 and hack off the buttstock and barrel, it is still considered a rifle because it uses the original rifle reciever. now, if I used a certified AR-15 pistol lower, then I am in the clear. I could go on and on about this, but this isn't a RS forum.

I think an Airsoft patriot would be very cool, if only as a display novelty.

my friend has a patriot-like gun. it's interesting, to say the least, and probably proves very useful in the winter as a pistol.

yeah, i've seen an airsoft Patriot, in springer form a few years ago on www.airsoftkorea.com.

I don't know if it's still there though. There was a guy that skirmishes near me that had a Patriot, and an M4 with the stock chopped, and an M16 pistol grip custom fabricated onto the bayonet lug a few years ago. Haven't seen him in ages though...
