Seems a bit cynical and underhanded of TM to produce a G17 and compete with KSC/KWA for sales rather than producing a different model of gun altogether.
For the same amount of R&D it took to produce a gun which can't really be much better than an existing product, we could have had a new HiPower or a 5-7.

However I may buy one of the CYMA glock AEP's just so I'll have a cheap sidearm for playing in the winter.

Indeed.
As you'll be well aware, no self-respecting hobbyist from Japan or HK can bear to be seen without THE latest gizmo. Gotta have the latest mobile phone, the latest MP3 player and the latest airsoft stuff.
Rampant consumerism FTW.
Sure, people will flood to buy it for a few months, until something arrives to replace it. Then it will become another shelf-filler.
My point is that TM could have created the same sales-rush for a new product BUT supplied something like a HiPower or 5-7 (among others) which the market has rarely seen before.
To me, this is very similar to them announcing that they have released a new M4 or something. Just begs the question; "Why bother?"

They bother for the same reason they've released so many M4 variants: they sell. Tokyo Marui knows that they can sell these in every airsoft outlet. Some one new to airsoft is going to trust the same company he got his AEG from. The pistols will drive AEG sales as the AEG sales drive GBBs. It's like when Eggo announced a few years ago that they'd start making syrup. It's synergy. Ask yourself, which is easier to find in shops, a KSC M9, or a TM M9? The TMs sell better, not because they're superior, but because they're more common, a more trusted name, and a good selection of aftermarket upgrades.
Here's a little challenge to all Arnies people: How many threads announcing a new pistol can you find that do not include someone bringing up the lack of a 5-7 on the market?

Aha. You've got to be kidding me.
How many great M4 models are on the market now? More than I can count.
Now, how many half-decent Glock 17 models are on the market now? And don't say KSC, remember I asked for half-decent ones.
*crickets*
That's right. This TM Glock 17 will simply fill a HUGE hole in the airsoft Glock market, finally. I've had enough of all those weenie compact Glocks out there, I want my 17.

Are you saying that the KSC is indecent, or above half-decent?
Too poor to get even a Rent-a-Sig... or is that too cheap?

Because the G17 is a standard LE and Military style pistol. They have all sorts of Glocks out, but none of them are a "standard issue" style. There are a LOT of people that will only use TM guns. Those people will be extatic to get a G17 from TM.

The KSC Glocks are fine, the market didn't really need another one, even though it will undoubtedly sell well.
Still, if it's as nicely made as TM's 1911, it'll be a winner!
Cheers.

You can always try to resist when times change, but you always end up losing.
Whenever a new pistol comes out nowadays, people whine about the Five seveN. I'm willing to bet when it's released, people will crave for something else. The consumerism Stealthbomber is criticizing doesn't go away even if someone releases something different.

Of course people will crave something else, but not something else the same as what we have...
Why do you think there's always a 'What gun do you wish they made?' thread active? Obviously, the realities of the Japanese market drive what manufacturers make, but I'm sure a GOOD Browning Hi-Power or FN 5-7 would sell.
I don't know, will Japanese KSC Glock 17 owners really rush out and buy a TM one? I wouldn't, if it was me, but I'm not Japanese (or a Glock 17 owner, actually
Cheers.
