Hi,

Being a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, we have had to endure the stricitist gun laws in the world (to my knowledge), due in no small part to the dealings of IRA and other terrorist organizations a few years back.

To my knowledge airsoft and replica guns are in fact not illegal, they are merely unregulated.

QUOTE
In the Firearms Acts 1925 to 1990, "Firearm" means-

( a ) a lethal firearm or other lethal weapon of any description from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged;

( b ) an airgun or any other weapon incorporating a barrel from which metal or other slugs can be discharged.

The legislation allows for multiple ownership of firearms. However, the owner must have an individual firearms certificate (licence) for each gun.

Each firearm certificate expires on the 31st July and must be renewed

As we all know airsoft is below the letality limit, so the firearms act does not apply. And while airsoft does incorporate air to discharge bb's, i do not think they can be classified as "slugs".

At the moment the minister for Justice is considering making legislation to put an outright ban on replica guns as they are as you have seen used by criminals.

What do you all think can be done to help to stop this, or at least have licenses made available for legitimate airsofters?

Lets just hope you guys never get into the same scenario that we in Ireland are experiencing

Under the definition you posted Airsoft guns would indeed seem to be considered firearms in Ireland as they qualify under ( B ) - "an airgun or any other weapon incorporating a barrel from which metal or other slugs can be discharged".

There is no lower bounding lethality limit in Ireland for air weapons as far as I know, all air weapons require a license and that includes Airsoft.

Be careful in your reading of the law as quite often dictionary definitions and legal defintions of a word don't tally. wink.gif The legal bit was mentioned in the full article that I wrote.

Sadly I don't know of a case in UK law (or in Ireland) off hand where firearms laws have gone backwards or been deregulated.

The 2006 Criminal Justice Bill states that an device under 1J in power does not classify as a firearm and does not need a firearms certificate.

And there is a site opening this Saturday in Dublin. It is now legal to skirmish in the RoI.

For every gun you sell and do not replace, a little kitten is placed into a woodchipper.

Check the date of the post you've quoted Tom, it was some time ago smile.gif

*Edit*
And is there really any need to bring this topic back from the dead?
