Pros: Very solid build quality, Matches gun finish well.
Cons: Tricky to fit if you don't know how.

The KWA Glock 19s are great guns, but they do have one flaw for the heavy user. The mag-latches are plastic and the slot they latch on to on the magazine is metal - and sharp. This is not a great combination over the course of several hundred magazine changes. Essentially what happens is that each time you press the mag-release latch, the metal on the magazine scrapes away ever-so-slightly at the plastic mag-latch. Eventually, the holding surface gets lower and a gap develops between the top of the magazine and the bottom of the blowback cylinder. This leads to gas venting each time a shot is fired, meaning much lower gas efficiency, and noticable cool-down.

There is a fix though. Guarder have developed this metal mag-latch to fit the KSC/KWA Glock series of pistols. As it is a tough metal, it doesn't wear away and keeps the magazing exactly where it is supposed to be.

It works perfectly once fitted and gives peace-of-mind to any Glock 'Power-User' Smile

However, fitting it can be very tricky if you don't know how to do it. Here's a guide...

Fitting the Guarder Metal Mag-Latch to a KWA Glock.

  • Inside the pistol-grip of the Glock, you will see a thin rod pointing straight up into the bottom of the existing mag-latch. This flexes and acts like a spring when the mag-latch is pressed. This needs to be disconnected from the current mag-latch before the old part can be slid out.

To disconnect this rod, push a small thin screwdriver behind it and lever it to the right and back. It will pop out and the mag-latch can then be pushed straight through.

  • Normally now, the new part can be pushed in and the rod aligned, but unfortunately the Guarder part is not exactly the same in dimensions as the part removed. Basically, the slit that the spring-rod sits in is not as deep as it is in the plastic mag-latch, so the rod itself needs to be shortened. See the photo below for comparison...

(NOTE: It is best to test this theory by trying to put the new Guarder latch in and seeing if it is too short. If it is not, you certainly don't want to make it any shorter)

Take a small pair of pliers and simply pull the rod upwards, directly out of its resting place. It is only held in there by friction. Snip off about 1 to 2mm from the end of this rod (do it bit by bit if necessary to make sure it doesn't get snipped too short). Once you have the desired length, push the rod straight back in where it originally came from and push it in hard as far as it will go.

  • Now it is time to insert the new Guarder Mag-Latch. Simply push the new latch through the side of the grip with the largest hole, small-end first. You may need to use the small screwdriver to edge the flexi-rod back a bit to ease the journey. When the mag-latch is about half way in, add a little silicone oil to the surfaces of the latch. The fit is fairly tight and a bit of oil goes a long way to helping the latch move naturally.

Continue to push the latch all the way through until it is seated correctly. Once in, you just need to push the flexi-rod to the right with your small screwdriver, and it should snap in to place inside the mag-latch.

  • That's it! Job done. You may find that the latch is a little stiff to move. Push it in and out a few times and practice loading and unloading the magazine fromt he grip, and it will soon loosen up. Now your Glock's mag-latch should never wear down again Smile

It's a great product and pretty cheap too. Shame it's almost impossible to get in the UK, but hopefully some UK suppliers will read this and decide to keep a couple in stock.

I have to knock a point off this product because of the difficulties fitting it, but once in, it is absolutely perfect. 9 out of 10.

Pros: Does what it says on the tin
Cons: Requires a bit of filing to do the job

The mag catch on my G18c wore down so much that when i fired it the mag fell out and hit my foot, Ouch!

I found that there are other dimensions that don't match up, apart from the hole for the rod to go in.

I used a file to shorten the rod until the guarder catch would fit in, but then noticed that it it wouldn't go in as far as the plastic one. It stuck out by enough to annoy me, so i had to thin out the part that stops the catch going through completely, until the catch was flush with the grip surface.

Once that was done, my glock was as good as ever.

Pros: Metal goodness
Cons: A little tinkering necessary

KSC/KWA Glocks are renown for their durability, but a few minor niggles still exist. For one, the stock plastic magazine catch can become worn after a while. This apparently leads to magazines falling out or the development of an improper seal which may lead to gas leaks or other problems.

My KSC G23F didn't need a new magazine catch since it is still new, but since I spent so much money on it already and I plan on using 50rd magazines with it, what's another $12?

So after reading many reviews on possible upgrades for my KSC G23F as well as installation instructions, I decided to take the plunge.

I ordered my part from www.airsoftnw.com, and many thanks goes out to John for his quick shipping and excellent communication.

I removed the magazine, took off the slide, and took a small common screwdriver to pry out the metal flexible rod that keeps the catch in place. I tried doing this from both the top side and bottom side and found that the top side is the easier way to go. Once the rod is removed from the groove on the catch, the catch can be removed from the grip frame.

I replaced my plastic mag catch with the Guarder Steel Magazine Catch. I then tried to reposition the rod back into the groove on the Guarder Magazine Catch. To no surprise, it would not fit. As you can see from R22's pictures above, the groove of the stock magazine catch (where the rod sits inside) is slightly longer than the groove on the Guarder Magazine Catch. In other words, the rod is too long (by 1-2mm) to fit inside the Guarder Magazine Catch's groove. So, I pulled out the rod with my pliers and I took my rusty metal file and took about 1mm off the tip of the rod. I put the rod back in place, reinserted the Guarder Magazine Catch, and was able to fit the rod back into the groove with my screwdriver.

In all, it took me about 5 minutes to install, counting my many attempts to place the unfiled rod into the groove and running around looking for a file. Once installed, I noticed that when I try to insert a mag slowly, it will get stuck part way through and its necessary to push in the magazine catch a little in order to completely insert the mag. This can be avoided if you just insert the mag using one swift motion.

I give it a 9/10 because of the necessary filing of the rod. Other than that, I have absolutely no complaints.

Pros: Cheap, Its metal (obviously) and you can get hold of it in UK!
Cons: The fitting of the product. Also the mag catch is a greyish colour which doesn't quite match the pistol.

After reading the above reviews and accidentaly stumbling across a UK stockist of the Guarder magazine latch, i decided to buy one. I bought it from fire-support.co.uk (recommended, good service). the catch itself was 10 quid plus 5 postage which i couldn't really complain about. I own the kwa glock 17 and even though mine didn't really need the metal catch quite yet as i'm a relatively low user, i decided to get one after becoming paranoid having read other users stories relating to the magazine catch. i had practiced the removal of the stock plastic catch prior to receiving the matal one so i knew exactly what i had to do. I discovered that the best way was to remove the slide and look down into the mag well. I used a thin pair of pliers whilst securing the mag catch with my thumb so it wouldn't move. It came out without too much of a ball ache. when i received the metal one i fully expected to have to file down the spring rod in order for my new metal latch to fit-I was right. It took me ages to do this with very little result to show for my half hours work. I had decided to tackle this from another angle which had i known in the first place, would have taken me 5 minutes. I put the wire cutting implement on the thin pliers to good use by snipping the tiniest bit off at a time. this took minimal effort. If you decide to do it this way, you must remember to cut off the tiniest bit possible at a time until the desired length is reached. the last thing you want is to cut it too short or you have yourself a useless glock and a very upset owner. also a pair of safety goggles may be a good idea if you are chipping little bits off with the wire cutter. once this is complete, it works so much better. it eliminated the magazine rattle that i always had from day one. i was also very surprised at how much the stock plastic catch had worn down with very little use. the catch demensions measured up perfectly and I didn't have any other fitting problems described in another above review. the only thing i would say is the mag catch is not black. it is a dark grey colour but that isn't too much of a problem. Overall a must have for all ksc/kwa users.
