Rail covers are generally an afterthought when tricking out your favourite AEG and most people don't give them a lot of thought. However, if like me you have a unusually sized RIS on your AEG then you might struggle to find a rail cover set that looks good on your gun.
The usual rail cover sets out there are one-piece affairs of limited size (usually designed with the M4 in mind) and while some manufactures offer some modular solutions - like TDI and Magpul - these options can be a little expensive. So if you have an oddly sized RIS and you want a rail cover of exactly the right size, but don't want to pay through the nose for one, what do you do?
Dboys make a very reasonably priced system called Dragon Scales, the reason is easy to see as each individual segment fits together in the manner of a length of scales. Though, to my mind they look a little more medieval than organic and remind me of old armour plating!
Either way - they look pretty cool.
I will add that the main down side is that these covers are not MilSpec. In other words - as usual - you get what you pay for (£6.99 for a 10 piece set). These are cheap plastic mouldings made from a pretty crude plastic that will, in time, deform as it gets gouged and wears in. Still, for airsoft use they are perfectly serviceable.
The one other criticism I have is that Dboys failed to design a special end piece, just to finish off the cover neatly. It just ends with a normal segment - which isn't a problem at all, it's just one of those aesthetic niggles that irks me.
The bottom line is: If you need a rail cover for an extra short or extra long RIS but don't want to spend big bucks the Dboy's Dragon Scales fits the bill perfectly, but they do it with a lovely bit of finesse.
