Introduction
The real steel HK MP5 needs no introduction. The UTG MP5 took everyone by surprise. Mostly because its outrageously low price tag, but make no mistake, this is not one of those CYMA bargain electric guns. The UTG MP5 is based on a full size Tokyo Marui MP5 with standard version 2 gearbox, and most if not all of the parts are interchangeable with standard parts made for the TM/ICS/CA MP5s.
Since the gun was released in the US, it has generated a lot of speculations and discussions. This review will focus on the basic things such as the look and the feel of the stock gun, and some of the issues my gun has out of the box. For more technical discussions and how to upgrade this MP5, please refer to Staticzero's excellent and thorough analysis in the forum http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=30898&hl= In the rest of this review, I'll use MP5 to simply refer to the UTG model unless otherwise explicitly specified
I have confirmed with people from Leapers that both UTG and "Under The Gun" are trademarks owned by Leapers.
Overview
The UTG MP5 comes in a nice box, and is held securely and efficiently in styrofoam cutouts. The box art is also decent, but with nothing special. Inside the box, you get the MP5A5 (i.e. MP5 with retractable stock and navy trigger group), a full stock, a sling, a scope mount, two short hicaps, a 8.4v 1100 mah NiMH mini rechargeable battery, a mini battery charger (input 110v, output 300 ma), barrel cleaning/unjamming rod, a replacement screw, a small allan key wrench, and the manual (which is fully in English). For all the above, I paid only $87 (USD) with shipping included! I can already see the skeptical look on your face: the gun must be a piece of junk at this price level. Fortunately, if you had thought that way, you couldn't have been more wrong.
Closer Inspection
Picking up the gun, it has a nice weight to it. I had an ICS MP5A4 before, and this one weighs about the same. The lower receiver, the pistol grip and the foregrip are plastic, but have excellent finish (looks like CA's fiberglass reinforced plastic), and feels just as solid as my old ICS MP5. There is no creaking, and the texture is indistinguishable from my ICS MP5. The upper receiver and outer barrel, however, are made of different kind of plastic, but has somewhat a metal texture with matte black finish. They look pretty good even at very close range, but is less impressive (maybe I'm just spoiled by the ICS metal receiver), and upon touching them, you won't mistake them for anything but plastic. And the front side of the mag well, where the two sides of the upper receiver meet, is not sealed properly, but does not affect functionality. The cocking handle is metal, but the tube inside is plastic, and I wouldn't recommend doing the HK slap. The hop up adjustment lever is behind the cocking lever slot, and can be tuned without any tools.
The retractable stock rail is metal with the shoulder pad being plastic. It has only 3 positions instead of 4, but it does feel very solid with minimum side movements that's needed for sliding. The full stock is made of the kind of plastic as the foregrip, and also feels solid with no flexing or creaking. The butt plate on the full stock can be removed, and it has a compartment inside for holding large battery. The gun, however, did not come with large battery, and the wiring is wired to the foregrip for mini battery. The full stock comes with a large battery sized brick in the stock for weights. Go figure. Changing the stock is very easy and can be done in a matter of minutes.
The sights are also plastic, and the rear sight can be rotated for 4 different apertures. Two of the positions are circles with different sizes, and the other two are weird U-shaped cuts.

The rear sight was a bit loose when it came, but a quick turn of the screw on top of it tightens it. The flashhider is screwed onto the outer barrel instead of being held by allan screws.

Other extrenal metal parts are the trigger, the fire mode selector switch, the mag release lever, the sling loops, and the pins that hold the foregrip, receiver and the stock.
The hicap is the short version that looks like two short mags clamped together, but the clamp is fake, and the outside mag also has two fake 9mm bullets on top. The mag itself is made of plastic, but the fake clamp is made of metal (wish it's the other way around). The built quality is pretty poor with visible seam lines that are not sealed properly and/or completely.
The scope mount comes with the MP5 raises above the iron sight, and does not block the iron sight. It also has a side rail for mounting laser or flashlight. The spacing between the cuts on top of the rail is not standard, however, so if you have a scope that's secured by two mount points, it might not fit.

For single point mount such as the ones for aimpoint will fit. The mount is tight and has no play. I do, however, fear the scope might break the upper receiver since the upper receiver is plastic after all. And it's a bit silly to mount an Aimpoint replica that cost almost the same as the whole gun package.
The sling is small and silly, in fact it's an insult to the gun. The front part tears right off, and the whole sling should be thrown away at once without any hesitation.
Performance
Ok, I didn't buy the gun to just look at it. I charged the stock battery with the stock charger for 4 hours, and put it in the gun. Loaded one hicap, and wound it all the way up. Insert mag, safety off, line up the sights with a target, I pull the trigger. A nice solid bang just like an AEG should. I am very pleased now: this thing shoots like it should! Squeezing the trigger a dozen more times on semi mode, and no jam, no misfeeds, and the gears sound as normal as the other expensive AEGs I shot. On full auto mode, the rate of fire (ROF) is also impressive though nothing special. I can feel the piston rocking back and forth inside cylinder and causing the gun to vibrate slightly.
Everything felt normal, but then I noticed the mag is not feeding properly on full auto. It's almost like the mag will feed every other shots or even less frequently on full auto. Did I not wind the hicap enough? I did, but that doesn't solve the problem. I can empty the hi cap with just one winding at the beginning, but I probably fire twice as many shots as there are BBs in the mag. On semi mode, however, the feeding is much more reliable. There are also other reports that other brand mags works fine in the MP5, so the problem is just UTG's mags.
*Updates*: I got a G&P MP5 mid cap, and the UTG MP5 shoots flawlessly with the G&P mag on both semi and full auto. I also got a replacement hicap from AirsoftAtlanta where I bought my gun from, and the new hicap also works perfectly.
The gun does not locks up or jam until the battery is low. It took me about 5 or 6 hi caps to drain the stock battery, and keep in mind, There were almost as many dry fires because of the misfeeds. So the battery capacity seems about right for 1100 mah battery. When the battery is low, the gun stopped shooting full auto, when I put it on full auto mode, it still shoots singles before it couldn't even crank a single shot.
I charged the battery again, and lube the hi caps a bit. Now one of the hi caps works pretty well on both semi and full auto, but the other one still gives me misfeeds on full auto. When the misfeed happens, usually shaking the gun a bit, or just keeping on shooting, it'd start feeding again. Maybe the mag needs some more breaking in.
I haven't carried out any range test yet, but I bought this with CQB in mind, so range is not too important. The MP5 is certainly more than adequate for 30ft indoor ranges. The hop up seems to be ok, but when I tune the hop up lever all the way back (max hop up), it'd shift back to the middle position as I shoot, but the effect is not really noticeable for indoor close quarters.
The power is all right. At close range, it penetrates one side of a normal US Coco Cola can, and makes a small dent on the other side, which more or less confirms the 250 - 300 fps claim.
More issue
Let's get real, we didn't really expect a flawless AEG at a third or quarter of the price of other AEGs, did we? Besides the feeding issue some of the mags have, the fire selector switch seems to be poorly built too. Mine just fell off when I was shooting (I guess the vibration is more than noticeable).

Before it fell off, it felt weak, and it does not click in place for the full auto mode (though there is noticeable click for the other fire mode positions), the position indicator seems to be just a bit off, and the white indicator paint is very thin. I went out and bought a set of TM MP5 fire mode selectors (cost me almost a third of the MP5 pacakge price). The TM selector has better white paint for the indicator, and fits on the gun much better than the stock part. In fact, now there's nice solid clicks on every fire mode/safe position. (The gun in all the pictures here is with the TM fire mode selector except the above one where it's off the gun)
Conclusion
The UTG MP5 has some flaws such as the mag feeding and the fire mode selector, but in general, the gun feels as solid as any plastic AEG can be (of course, you can't compare the plastic upper receiver to a metal one such as the ones on ICS or CA MP5s), but at a fraction of the price. It makes you wonder where and how did they cut down price? Did they use inferior parts, or did they just not make profit, or did TM just overcharge their customers? UTG does use more plastic parts such as the sights and mags, but so far, the motor is not burnt, and the gears are not stripped, piston still holds up, and the hop up still works, and the plastic used for the grips and stocks are certainly not inferior to anyone. The UTG MP5 is certainly a nice entry level AEG especially for those on a budget, and quite exceeds my expectation (though I had to admit I didn't have too high expectation in the beginning, but now I expect this gun to last). And as one gets more experienced and comfortable with AEGs, one can spend more money to upgrade this gun with a metal upper receiver and more powerful gearbox. |

When I got home from school with my friend Micheal, I couldn't wait! I rushed to my room and there it was! The gun was laying on my bed. I opened it up and Micheal put on the full stock. I couldn't wait to fire it. But I had to let it charge for 3hrs 50 mins. When I did begin firing, I was amazed by it's high rate of fire! 800 Rof. Keep in mind that this is my first Aeg. The gun is not very accurate but the rate of fire makes up for it. This gun far exceeded my expectations!

I purchased the UTG MP5 because my AE MP5's full stock had a small crack in it that creaked when it was slung. The UTG MP5 cost a little more then a full sized TM MP5 rear stock so I figured it was like getting a rear stock and a free gun.
To my surprise the stock fit perfectly but will not accept a full size battery. The screws for the rear sling mount protrude into the battery compartment making a mini battery the only possibility for this full sized stock.
My main AEG (AE MP5-SD5) broke it's tappet plate after 3 years of skirmishes last weekend so it seemed like the perfect time to give the UTG a run for its money. The selector switch broke off after 5 minutes of adjusting the hop up. It was not a loose screw. The metal pin connecting the two fire selectors is pot metal and snapped. The great guys at Airsoft Atlanta are sending me a new one at no charge.
I was told by Airsoft Atlanta that so far the UTG MP5 has around a 2% failure rate and that it is on par with TM and any other AEG.
I did get to play with the gun despite the selector switch and had a lot of fun with it. It handles just like a stock TM and is every bit as accurate.
You do get what you pay for and this AEG is no exception. But for the price you are getting quite a lot in the form of an inexpensive backup/loaner AEG and quite a few accessories.

This was my first AEG and what a wonderful learning tool it has been. Thanks to staticZero for the walk through. all I have to add to this review page is this.
Anyone thinking of getting this gun, go right ahead, but expect replacing some parts after 5000 BBs. I had to replace the spring guide, which had no washer on it at all, this is why it broke. It had little or no compression after 5000BBs as well. So after a new spring guide and ICS piston head, I threw a classic army stock spring in I had laying around in there. What a wonderful AEG.
I must also add, you can in fact get a 8.4v large type battery in the full stock, yes the screws do make it tight but all I had to do was push a little and it went in without causing damage to the battery wrapper. The full stock does have channels in it to keep the wire nice and tidy, too.------------------------------

Mags
|
|
---Intro---
The UTG MP5 is, simply put, a perfect gun to buy. I purchased mine from Airsoft Atlanta for $100, and a week later I had it. I charged up the battery, loaded a mag, and started shooting.
---In the box---
The gun came with:
-1 MP5 AEG
-1 retractable stock
-1 full stock
-1 8.4V 1100mah NiMH battery
-1 trickle charger
-1 claw mount
-2 MP5K highcap magazines
-1 cleaning/de-jamming rod
-1 owners manual
Airsoft Atlanta also included 1 free Star lowcap Magazine.
For $100 dollars the gun comes with everything you need to get started except for the bb's. Most guns just include the gun and one magazine, so you must spend more on the rest.
---First Impressions---

This was my first AEG, and I was quite impressed for $100. Many of my other springers, such as a Super 9, had been complete crap. The MP5, however, appeared to be of exceptional quality. The plastic on the gun is not the horrible springer plastic you get on some guns, and the finish was very good. The gun felt very solid.
---Shooting impressions---

Silencer and scope not included.
The ROF is high. The consistency is good. The range, however, is not very good, but this is a CQB weapon, after all. The highcaps feed well in semi, but feed random bursts in full-auto.
---Upgrades---

I rewired the gun with 16AWG wire and Deans Connectors, changed the piston O-ring, and ported the piston head. The gun is now more powerful and has a higher ROF. Total upgrade cost was less than $10. I also bought a box of 10 Star realcaps, which work flawlessly.
---Overall---
This gun is a perfect for beginners and verterans alike. It comes with many accessories, can be easily upgraded to be on par with a stock Tokyo Marui, and extra mags are cheap. For $170, you can have an exceptional MP5A4 or A5 and 10 magazines.

Craply built internally, Plastic
|

Do not buy this gun!!! The internals are built like crap, so cheap. If you wiggle the mag forward and backward, it will cause the feeding tube to break, causing the barrel to break, then causing the hop up to break. When cracked, the fps decreases by 50 due to the crack opening. Just because the reciever is built with plastic, this will cause the mag to be loose no matter what. My gun only lasted about 2 weeks before it died on me, even though i took good care of it. When I opened the gun There was tape to hold down the wiring. Also I found hair inside. Just to tell you guys do not buy this gun because it is poorly built.

well the high cap magazines it came with are junk they dont feed. The 30 round mag is good but if you shoot full auto until it empties it only takes about 5 seconds. The back sight can be adjusted and if u look through it u can nail someone about 50-60 feet away. i recomend getting the star 10 pack of 30 round magazines anyways it is a good gun for the money.

This gun from utg blew me away! The fps was good, but nothing special, and it was surprisingly accurate. The high cap mags are a little wobbley when in the gun but a piece of duck tape around the top fixes that. My mags have yet to misfeed, and i have even been able to put in a custom tracer unit inside them. (yes it does fit). The accuracey was great.
The downside to this gun is it breaks alot. Nothing to significant, but anyone who doesnt know there way around a gun to well will be intimidated. All of my problems have been fixed easily, without replacing parts. The bigest problem was actualy the smallest for me. The screws on the bottom of the grip that adjust the motor loosend up so my gun didnt fire. I took my whole gun apart, including the mechbox, only to realize i need to tighten to phillips heads. Hahaha, silly me.
If you are new to airsoft this is the gun for you. I love it and after working out 2 or 3 small errors it has been reliable to me for over a year.------------------------------ Professionals are predictable. Its the amatures that are dangerous.
