i first visited the urban site that combat south run and enjoyed a good game and a great day out....but i longed to storm villages and storm about in a wood.....

well a few months later i got the chance!
i met a fellow islander through airsoft boards and took the plunge to go to the woodland site with him.

once we arrived i noticed that there were alot of player present and not many in tri color desert uniforms..other than me..dam.

we walked over from the car park - quick note on this, its not overly huge and can get very muddy very quick arrive earlyish to get a nice spot- over towards the tented safezone, they have large tree trunks that are set up with a large gap between them to provide seats- theese can get a bit uncomfortable so we took fold up chairs- they also use large canvas sheets wich are hung on poles above providing a nice shelterd area to sit and prepare.

after signing in - expect to wait a little longer when its busy - and getting stamped we moved over to check out the small tent they had to purchase some BB grenades and to find one of the staff members to get a chrono.

at about 9:00am games begin there is a main safety breifing given by Steve (owner) for new players while the rest walk over to the village - the village has a couple of two story buildings a metal bridge sand bagged bunkers a large sangar and many other buildings and cover points- this is the venue for the first game......speedball.

after this game they tend to lay on some other more intense games at about 12ish they stop for lunch...now this is where they really shine, the food is spot on!
they lay out bread rolls, sauces, knives, forks, spoons and even grated cheese!
they offer burgers, jacket potatoes,beans...have no fear if you are vegitarian as they also offer a veggie option you only have to ask!

after lunch they begin a last big game usually changing each week and normally encompassing the WHOLE site wich can become very intense!

in conclusion the whole setup they have is amazing...the marshalls are freindly and wander about popping smoke grenades and other pyros and chatting to players, the food is superb, the games are superb and really provide intense firefights.

i would reccomend this site to anyone wishing to play in a large woodland setting while enjoying freindly players and staff!

Right I've been here a few times and after seeing a review going up thought I would add to the above its slightly long winded but theres some brief reasons why this place is great at bottom if you cant be bothered to read every last bit.

*this is using the most recent game as a example (2nd October 2005)*

I arrived as normal around 9am, the site isn’t very hard to find and the basic map on the website or leaflet although looking basic is easy to follow. The car park can be a problem but there every time I’ve been they have someone waving in cars (at the end of the day though it is hard to all get out). The safe zone has a tent to sign in collect any rented gear/clothes, another for renting guns ammo and pyros (which I think also has chargers, never used them myself though) another tent latter for the bbq lunch and a large covered area for players to set up.

There’s some portaloos in metal sheds which are basic with instructions on how to use (pull some thing open, aim, wee, press plunger to flush, shut hole thingy) but I would only use them for a wee.

Ammo on offer is .20 or .25 excel at a tenner for both (.20 is a 3700 bag .25 is a 2200) and normally have a range of dangerzone pyros with bb grenades being £3, small smokes £2, and flashbangs £2.

Right... to the actual site and gaming
At 9.30 the new players and people renting are held in the safe zone and given a safety briefing and general explanation of the rules (basic take your hits - anywhere on body not on barrel, friendly fire still counts, bb grenades in a building means everyone’s dead ect...) The rest can move up into the site to the radio shack (a building with foxholes around it) where they can set hop up and take practice shots at some coke cans hanging on a washing type line. Then when ready the players are walked out to the first game around 10 (more info on time is here).

On the day I’m basing this review on the players where, as normal split into 2 equal teams but then everyone was gathered around and told about a new rule that the marshals where adding to curb or stop cheating, which had been a issue on the last game with what I think was mainly one off renting kids. The marshals where now armed and throughout the day would shoot people to make sure they took their hits...if the player took the hit they would be told they where playing well and to run back in and carry on playing if not they would have a little "chat". This was done in the fairest way and not just random shootings that would give you away or mess up your game.

The day normally starts with a speedball game to get everyone right in there with one life, every time I’ve been, being played within an area with natural barriers or boundaries. The game is basic and is flags or elimination. This is normally a couple of minuets and very intense.

the next game on the day was the village assault the village consists of about 6 buildings some with a second floor, a main bridge and sandbag bunker. There is a natural boundary/ditch to the front going around one side of the village with fairly thick trees and open ground on the other side. The attackers have infinite lives the defenders 2, the attackers have to cross the main bridge or cross around a route on the back with at least one person before they can cross anywhere. This is a great game attacking or defending and is very well balanced (defenders always lose I think but holding it for a good 20 or so minuets is great fun)

There is a quick reload and tea back at the safe zone then when I have been a good hour long games that in experience either go really well and are great fun or can get confusing and messed up. On this day it was a regular game but spiced up a bit. The king of the hill mission with one team starting at the bottom of the hill the other a bit further back from the top both with the objective of taking a central point on the hill. This is rather bias to the team at the top as both times when i've played fighting uphill I’ve been knackered when I reach the fight. This was also changed slightly on the day with another small team being made with ten people off each team joining a new white team which held the objective at the start then when out rejoined their own team this went some way to evening the balance as the team at the top could no longer sprint to the objective, catch their breath and then defend with a great advantage from the other team fighting up hill they had to fight for it first. New players may find this game intimidating as it covers a very large area but after either following experienced players or getting your bearings you will figure out where you are sooner or latter.

BBQ lunch follows and as said is great hotdogs, hamburgers, beans, jacket potatoes all cooked great cheese, ketchup, sauces and onions to go along plenty to fill you up...and then they call seconds!!!.

The evening then had another long game which was made by a regular site team and was good laugh with some creative extras. Then the people who attacked the village in the morning got to defend it.

Throughout the day I'd have to say I didn’t see any cheating and think the new marshal rule worked well.

-Events where top notch
-marshals friendly and helpful
-players friendly
-games fair or balanced and large games good fun but some times slow or confused
-free BBQ great food

I would just say this place is excellent with new or older players being welcome.

Pretty much my local skirmish site.

The Combat South Team are quite active in adding to the scenery & building new fortifications & sangars. Far above the usual upturned pallet affair.

Most game days include a big themed game with a couple of staff or players acting as non-com hostages/VIPs etc.

The site is reasonably large with a variety of woodland. Mostly Oak & Beech but also a small Pine plantation and more open sections. The Village is excellently layed out with sturdy buildings & towers.

There is usually a large player turnout with quite a few people kitted out in geerdo mode. 80+ players isn't unusual. There are a couple of semi regular teams too. This could be a little intimidateing for a newbie however most of the regulars are pretty welcoming of first timers.

Also the grub is top notch and never in short supply Smile.

Once again safety seems to be the main concern. Too much shooting around the safe zone. Most has been said before so I wont repeat myself apart from to say the Hog Roast at Xmas was great, as is the other food always, especially with double helping on the wetest day of the year we happened to be playing. Those covered safe zones come into their element then!!

Teams could do with a bit more direction, no one ever seems to know what they are doing. Some one just starts shouting and causing confusion!

Never a fan of speedball gasmes, prefer the all day games. They tend to play shorter games but I feel there is less need of tactics that way but thats my opinion.

Ok if its your local skirmish site, but been there twice and dont plan on rushing back.

I bought my TM G36C from Combat South so I had a free woodland gaming day. I went in August and it was also my first ever woodland skirmish. Apart from being a sweltering hot and humid day my mate and I made it down at 9.15 and was pleasantly shocked at how busy it was. The car park is miniscule and it was rammed - get there earlier!

Most of what I would say has already been commented on so I'll summarise.

1. Safety - I agree that too many people were shooting in and around the safe zones.

2. Games were a bit too short. I, like the guy above, prefer the tactical element of airsoft above speedball games that rely far too much on respawning.

3. Perhaps a little too busy but I will commend the staff on their ability to keep it somewhat organised.

4. But on the note of organisation there was a distinct lack of team organisation, just a lot of more "experienced" players shouting at other people and causing confusion.

5. Food - the best spread of any site I've played so far. I was throughly impressed. (Food is important to a man like me Smile )

6. Friendly staff and generally friendly players. As newbie I didn't feel that intimidated at all.

7. Cheating - I thought this day was particularly marred by people not taking their hits here. Not being that experienced with many other sites I can't really say whether this is commonplace at this site.

CSW is not my local site. I travel to CSW about once a month to skirmish there - and a round trip is about 160 miles. But it is worth it. I don't rate the site closer to me and CSW is worth the extra 90 minutes in the car.

The organisers are very good at what they do, the players are generally fair and almost all the games are undertaken in the best of spirits. At Christmas, the prize draw is worth several hundred pounds and my brother won the main prize; a G&P 'Stubby Killer' M4!!!

The site itself is huge and a mental map is definately needed. Firefights can happen in open woodland, dense woodland, up or down hills, in the village, in trenches - the site benefits for having a wide variety of terrain.

Downsides are few and far between. Occasionally, the longer objective based games can suffer from a lack of information reaching all the players, and this can lead to 'what's do we have to do now?' setting in. Also, as CSW is sooooo popular, parking can be a problem after 9am or so. But we usually straddle a verge in the 4x4, so we can cope.

Cheating is swiftly dealt with and the emphasis at CSW is fairness.

Anyone and everyone who skirmishes in the UK (or abroad) should try this place out.
