DEVGRU Throat Microphone

Let me introduce you to the DEVGRU ( http://www.devgru.co.kr/ ) throat microphone. DEVGRU is a korean company, manufacturing two throat mic, the TM-01, made for airsoft and the TM-01M for LE and military units. In this review, both models have been tested The box The throat microphone comes in a small paperboard box, which contains two plastic bags, one with the throat mic, the other with the ear piece and tube. A small operation manual is also include, explaining how to use the mic and its technical data. Military version also comes with a spare neck band.

The six pins radio's adaptator is not include, you need to buy it separately. Here is the list of the available adaptators : A01F - Two pins connector for Motorola radios (models list http://www.devgru.co.kr/ao1f.htm ) A02Y - Two pins connector for i-com/standard/Yaesu/Midland/Maxon/others FRS radios (models list http://www.devgru.co.kr/ao2y.htm ) A04F - 2.5mm single pin (models list http://www.devgru.co.kr/ao4f.htm ) J01A - Adpatator for Motorola Jedi radios A03F - Two pins connector Kenwood radios. Please notice you need a specific model, the TM-01 KW. Only Kenwood adpataters can be fit on it.
The throat mic in detail: The throat mic is made up by a microphone module (on the right) and speaker module (on the left) put on a central articulation. Those two modules are covered by a non slipping plastic area, ensuring protection of it and a good handling on the neck. The neck band is elastic and is closed by an plastic fastener on the back. If the band is correctly adjusted, the mic won't move, even after several hours of wear during an intense activity (running, jumping, crawling..) and a wet neck (rain, sweat..) The only weakness is see is a fragility of neck band's side buckles. One of my broked during the test. However this problem must be solved soon, according informations I got from DEVGRU after having reported this problem.

The ear piece is mold, which provide a very good handling. It's made for the left ear. The eartube is very long, you have to cut it to your size for good fitting.

The PTT switch is well sized, you can find it easily. The pressure is smooth. It's hold by a strong velcro on the back. Having run, jump and crawl into bushes, switch button didn't detach. The microphone/PTT unit/6-pin connector set can't be separated like the PRYME's Gladiator ( http://www.pryme.com/bvc3/category.aspx?categoryid=24&openid=24 ).

Sound quality The sound transmission/reception tests were made with a TK-3107 Kenwood radio Transmission is really good. Speaking normally, transmission quality is 5/5. If whispering, it drops to 3/5 but still remains audible. External noises cancelation is good too. The speaker unit also includes a filter to manage irregular and noised reception. Reception is really clear and stable, no problem with this.
Differences between military and regular versions Both versions look identical. Military version's warranty is 2 years. It's also waterproof & fire resistant (not guarantee in regular version, which is weatherproof) Also in case of real military unit, they can order various thing, like coiled cable & plane cable / finger PTT / different style ear piece / maximum sound fitting for thier radio models etc...

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
Clarity of transmission, versatility, compatibility with many radios, doesn't wiggle around your neck (it stays in same place)
|
|
Cons:
|
Price, plastic component where neck strap connects to is thinner than I would have liked (it's still very strong)

Best throat mic system I have ever used...I used two other less expensive brand before this one and I was less than happy with their performance. Most common complaint I heard was that they do not stay in place but I ignored those warning signs and bought one anyways. I bought a cheap one at first then, it not working out as it is suppose to, bought yet another brand. Well, folks what they say is true…most of throat mic out there on the market is ineffective at best and useless at worst. As a result, your teammates can not hear you...this usually happens when you are counting on your commo the most (remember Mr. Murphy and his law?). Other brand's ear pieces often fall out and throat mic wiggles around my sweaty neck...not Devgru.
Devgru throat mic system is versatile and compatible with number of radio systems. It has attachment system that will go on to any load bearing system, tac vest, RAV, CIRAS, and Weesatchs, Wasatch...just bring them on. They will fit. Lots of thinking went behind the design of this unit. One item that immediately comes to my mind is the PTT unit. It is designed to prevent accidental hot mic’ing. It is hard to describe the peace of mind you feel when you do not have to think about your commo system working when they need to work. Please learn from my mistake, do not waste your money on other slightly less expensive throat mics.
With all the fancy tech stuff aside, I like this unit for the fact that it stays in its place and it works and the fact that I can use this unit with my baclava. I got to use it in the thick woods last Sunday. I was crawling through branches and thick brushes. I was running and falling. My Devgru throat mic stayed in place and worked flawlessly. Only problem I had was not placing the throat mic properly. (Check your commo before your mission). Once placed near my adam's apple, it worked great. I asked for feedback from my teammates and they report to me that my transmissions were clear.
Strongly recommended…they go for about $105 at places like airsoftgi and airsoftextreme.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):

worth every penny, clear transmission.
|
|
Cons:
|
possible PTT trouble
|
|
i have the operator multi TM-02 version.
after some trouble shooting my works perfect. i recieved my with a flawed PTT button so i had to open it up (hex grubs under the velcro) and fix it. so if yours do not work it´s most of the cases the PTT.
now that i have fixed it is a perfect throat-mic. even whispers is transmitted perfect.
on a side note. the operator multi does not work with kenwood radios. you have to bye the KW version (tthe conector on multi has 6 pins and KW has 4 pins).
