Reason for buying Biodegradable:
My ‘team’ and I have been playing airsoft for about 2 years. Being fortunate enough to own a small piece of land, 4-6 mates and my brother use it for ‘war games’. Every one of us owns at least 1 AEG and a GBB of some sort. I myself am into low/mid cap mags and semi automatic shooting (the realistic warfare feel). However, most of the others seem to believe that because full auto is at a switch of a finger, it is compulsory to use nothing but. Between us, we would put around 8000 bb’s about the place in a day (nothing compared to skirmishers I know), after several games, white balls of plastic are visible all over the place.
Therefore I decided to look into the rather expensive idea of biodegradable ammunition (I saw my parents side of the argument, however the cost and thought has scared certain players off). After searching the web, I found that wolf armouries were selling ‘biodegradable’ bb’s that would degrade within 18 months in the British climate. In my naive and dare I say it, foolish act, I bought several thousand and mounted a huge bill which I had to work for to pay off.
After using them for a while I paid a visit to AA in the early summer. They too were selling Gold Fire ammunition, I queried as to whether the ammo was plastic or biodegradable, and even mentioned the name (wolf…..). The dude there explained that they weren’t, and neither the manufacturers nor the bottle label mentioned a word of biodegradable. To be honest I was extremely ‘cheesed off’ to put it in politer words, but I couldn’t complain to wolf until I could prove that they wouldn’t rot in 18months (let this be a lesson to others). I had no choice but to use up the ‘fake’ ammo until it had run out. So, a few months later, I came to my last 3000 and thought it was time to do the right thing.
Biotech BBB Olive 0.2:
I had already noticed the Biotech ammo when visiting AA’s shop but they were too pricey for my liking, however they did explain to me how they were resin and technically edible. So on using up the other, I visited the ironfoot shop website (www.ironfoot.co.uk/shop).
It sells bags of 1700 Biotech Olive ammo for £7.75 a bag. The price lowers if you buy in bulk. So after telling my mates/fellow players the new rule that plastic ammo was now banned, I proposed using this ammo. The majority agreed, even though the price is for about a quarter of what you would get in plastic ammo. I ordered a bulk order of the green 0.2g bb’s. Expecting a 6 day wait for delivery, I wasn’t too excited. However, the order was processed by the following morning and the package arrived 2 days later, Well-done ironfoot, great delivery and a full order hassle free. I also order a battery for a mate (his melted, my fault), that came too, with sheets explaining charging, looking after it and using it correctly, nice I thought.
The following weekend we used it. It was quite amusing to see everyone using semi auto, just to conserve the ammo (that’s one plus side to the price). I’m so glad I picked the greens, they are excellent. Just like the real bullets you could not see them coming. No dodging or rude gesturing as enemy dance around your flying ammo. The only way to know if your hit is a nice sting on the hand or a fat lip.
The ammo itself is perfectly spherical, no dodgy mouldings etc and ‘Olive’, dark green colour. I didn’t have one jam at all. For one objective, I had my scope mounted on my M15a2 and was resting in cover when the words ‘S*”t, my battery’s out’. With an opportunity too good to miss, I squeezed the trigger and shot the dude as many times as I could before he hit the ground. After he explained how he couldn’t see where the hell they were coming from. It’s true, even with a scope in broad day light I couldn’t see the bb’s in flight.
Overall I think that Biotech have done an excellent job. The ammo is accurate, ‘invisible’, perfectly spherical and it starts rotting within 6 months. However, with anything biodegradable or ‘different’ it does come with a price tag. That said, ironfoot appeared to be the cheapest in the UK.
Quality- 10/10. Perfect.
Shooting-9/10. Work fine. However might be a bit too light for snipers (there are 0.25g versions), olive.
Value for money- 5/10. This is 50/50, they rot but cost a bomb and so depends on the reason for buying. There are 'invisible' non biodegradables out there.
I would defiantly buy again.
