Hello All,
I am going to review my HSGI Denali chest rig.
The Denali chest rig is actually a HSGI Silverthrone chest rig, yet instead of the Silverthrone mag pouch setup, a extra admin panel was added behind the mag pouches.
Or for more clarity,optacticals pic
http://us.st11.yimg.com/store1.yimg.com/I/optacticalgear_1878_33704707
I cant really figure out from the description, whether the Sniper waist pack that I have , is a default piece on the Denali and Silverthrone.
It doesnt explicitly state that it is or isnt. And optacticals pics have them on it.
So I will act as if it is default part of it.
So now to the rig itself.
Pouches :
Mags-
The Denali has three mag pouches on the front, which will hold 3 AR mags each. You can comfortably carry 15 mags in this vest.9 total in the main mag pouches, and then 3 in each of the Sniper waist packs pouches attached to the bottom via zipper. The sniper waist pack pouches are facing horizontally outward, so its a bit tricky getting to get to these.
So a wooping 15 mags on person.
And if you are of the type that needs nothing else than ammo, you can actually, and I kid you not, carry 33 AR rifle mags on person.
9 in main mag pouches,6 per side utility pouch,3 per sniper waist pack pouch, one in the slot behind the side utility pouches and one in all 4 of the mesh pockets in the back of the rig
Not that you are likely to be very comfortable at all, and its questionable that you will have 33 mags lying around for one AEG,but hey ! You COULD do it.
You can also carry 4 pistol mags. There are two single pistol mag pouches per side. One is attached to the outer rifle mag pouch, and one attached to the side utility pouch. They will comfortably fit KJW G23 mags and KJW Para mags ( IE Double stack .45 type mags ) .
These pouches are the only pouches that are not equipped with a fastex buckles, with exception of the very very end of the sniper waist pack, which also only has velcro, yet I cant think of anything to get in there anyway.
Boom pouches -
You have two Frag grenade pouches on the front of each Side utility pouch ( total 4 nades). The frag pouches are the only pouches that dont have velcro, and the pouches have cinch tights, to keep your nades where they belong.
Also attached to the Side utility pouches you have a Flash/Smoke/CS pouch.
All other pouches on this rig, are fastex buckle equipped, and all these pouches have the option of "silencing" the velcro by means of a pouch internal connected piece of velcro.
Helpful pouches -
You have a utility pouch on each side of the rifle mag pouches. They are very spacey ( they can fit 6 AR mags facing forward so you can get the picture if you put 6 mags next to each other ) , and can easily accomodate a respectable medical kit, and other neccessities.Batteries or BB bags for instance.
ON the back of these pouches, one the left side you have a compartment with bungee cord. You could possibly put a larger radio or handgun in there. On the right you have open compartment
The Admin panels -
There are two admin panels.
One directly behind the Main Rifle mag pouches, and one along the entire frame of the rig.
These are opened via dual zippers.
You will first need to open the fastex buckle holding down the pouch directly above the main rifle mag pouch area, to gain full access to the admin panels.
Admin panel one includes :
Front :
One open compartment with see-through plastic, for maps and documents .
Back :
One open additional compartment for documents etc.
6 "pen" or equal sized cylinder object slots. One small pocket with bungee top
Admin panel two , stretches the entire frame of the rig and includes :
Front :
One large open see-through compartment for more docs and maps etc
One each side, one more open compartment for docs etc.
Back :
One open main compartment with webbing on front
Two compartments on each side of the main compartment, where left one has 6 "pen" or equal sized cylinder object slots on the front of it.
One velcro closable open compartment behind the main compartment
And last but not least the back side of the rig has 4 mesh , velcro closable pouches, for docs, mags ( uncomfortable because these will be directly on your chest ) etc.
Shoulder straps :
The Shoulder straps have shoulder pads built in to them. The front and back of these connect with fastex buckles to the top and sides of the carrier. The Shoulder pads are 6cm wide at narrowest spot, and 9,5cm at the widest .
Rig side buckles have a D ring for hanging radios, guiding hydro tubes, radio cables , or if you wish - hooking up a one point sling.
On the strap side there are fastex buckles directly after the ones which connect to the rig , facing towards the back of the rig.
This is for HSGI Hydration carrier.
The Straps of course cross over in true chest rig fashion.
There is a horizontal strap fastened by fastex buckles to keep the bottom part of the rig snub around your back.
Sniper waist pack :
The Sniper waist pack is mounted via a zipper on the bottom of the rig.You can take it off if you want to run a bit lighter.
There are also 4 D-rings directly above the zipper for the sniper waist pack, where you can connect HSGI 12 X 40mm pouch shingle via straps.
Conclusion :
This isnt a cheap piece of gear coming in at 315$ new at optactical.
Although at the same time, you get a lot for your cash.
The rig is sturdy,and rugged.
You can carry so much stuff in this rig, that I personally couldnt fill it out .
It is definately a good rig for hardcore reenactors, since it will carry a lot of stuff, that a usual scrimage player wouldnt carry with him.
Hardcore geardos and players wont balk at the price though either.
I personally carry my chest rigs riding high,IE really on my chest. The rig performs that perfectly. You cant really get your arms down properly then, because of the utility pouches. Then again,if you really need all the space this rig offers, dont be surprised that it runs big and bulky.
With a HSGI hydro carrier, the putting on gets a bit complicated since the hydro carrier is only connected via buckles on the front and then replaces the horizontal back strap.
But I am sure, with a hydro carrier, you can sustain yourself for several days. You can run comms, masses of mags, maps, snack bars, your GBB,BB, batteries, a medpack. You would most likely need to bring your food in something else though, unless you wish to not use a medpack.
The HSGI hydro carrier has two reservoir mounting points, so if your not too lazy to carry two reservoirs, you could run with 6 liters of water ( untested as of yet ).
The Denali is a monster of a chest rig, and is a good rig for real enthusiasts, who arent shy of carrying a lot of equipment.
I must also say that it is big width wise. I am 180cm tall and 85kg, and it still is a bit big for me.
Personally there are a few things I would have gone without, but theres one thing you always have to remember, is that this was designed for the two way lethal range, not the airsoft one.
Overall a high end piece of gear, and well worth its cost.
