Description:
|
"Gunslinger Girl" is a manga by Yu Aida that was also adapted as a 13-episode anime television series, produced from 2003 to 2004 by Madhouse Production.
Henrietta was an innocent little girl when her entire family was massacred and she was left for dead. She was rescued by a privately-owned social welfare organization and given cybernetic components over her battered body. Brainwashed by the organization, she and four other girls now work as cold-blooded assassins, doing the dirty work for the Italian government.

Gunslinger Girl

OK you guys are probably thinking what the heck is anime doing in an airsoft review section. Well first off is has guns, most are in airsoft form, and lots of action and is based on possible events, nothing too out of the blue like space pirates and dimensional cannons. See, isn’t that similar to airsoft?
Anyway, Gunslinger Girl is not just another anime show with guns and girls and senseless violence. Actually there is very little violence (Will be mentioned later on). Gunslinger Girl’s storyline has a more emotional and physiological aspect as the story weaves its trail from one protagonist to another.
Set in modern-day Italy, the story of Gunslinger Girl revolves around a corporation called the Social Welfare Agency, sponsored by the Italian government. Publicly, the mission of the Social Welfare Agency is to save and rehabilitate human lives. In reality, the Social Welfare Agency is a public front for Section Two of the Political Warfare Section, a subdivision of the Italian intelligence responsible for counter-intelligence, counter-terrorism and a series of experiments designed to create the perfect government-commissioned assassin. While Section One conducts their operations with normal human operatives, Section Two employs the use of young cyborgs on the fringe of technology.
The protagonists are Henrietta, Triela, Rico, Claes, Angelica, and their mentors are Guise/Jose, Hilshire, Jean, Raparo, and Marco, respectively. The handler is directly responsible for his girl's training, conditioning, field performance, development and overall welfare. Once the handler takes charge of his assigned girl, he is free to use the teaching methods he considers best suited for his character. These methods vary with the handler, though he has the option of using greater amounts of drugs and brainwashing. Some handlers prefer to treat their girls more humanely with minimal conditioning (as Guise and Hilshire did) while others prefer to rely more heavily on conditioning their girls, treating them like machines (as Jean and Lauro did).
It is important to mention that another fratello is suddenly brought up in episode nine, Lauro and Elsa.
As mentioned above, the action is quick and short, but powerful and bloody. The idea of Gunslinger Girl is to not have just girls shooting people. This anime is geared more towards drama and the effects of the cybernetic implants and conditioning.
The animator’s attention to detail is extraordinary. Take these screencaps for example (Those living in Italy would know these sites: Florence, Uffizi Gallery, Spanish Steps):

As for the weapons:
Henrietta:
SIG Sauer P239

Fabrique Nationale P90

Triela:
Winchester Model 1897

SIG Sauer 230SL
SIG Sauer 230BK

Heckler & Koch G3A3 (Episode 3 and 12)

Rico:
CZ-75 Version 2

Dragunov SVD

Beretta SPC-90 (Episode 7)

Galil MAR (Episode 3)

Claes:
Heckler & Koch VP-70

Angelica:
Steyr AUG A1

Elsa:
SIG SG550

SIG Sauer P229

Episode Titles:
- Fratello (Big Brother Little Sister)
- Orion (Astronomic Observation)
- Ragazzo (Young Boy)
- Bambola (Doll)
- Promessa (Promise)
- Gelato (Payment)
- Protezione (Protection)
- Il Principe del Regno Della Pasta (Fairy Tale)
- Lycoris Radiata (Herb Spider Lily)
- Amare (Fever Love)
- Febbre alta (Tender Emotions)
- Simbiosi (Symbiosis)
- Stella Cadente (Shooting Star)
The anime consisted of thirteen episodes. Gunslinger Girl left me wanting more, however it is understandable that the series was short because it cost a total of ¥169,000,000 for all thirteen episodes, however, I was satisfied with the emotional ending at the end of the series. The manga series is still going, up to volume 6. Gunslinger Girl is probably the only anime that I have seen that follows the manga series so closely. Except for timeline differential, what is said in the manga is what is said in the anime.
If you like excellent classical music, guns, action, a perfectionistic attention to detail, Beethoven Ninth Symphony, and the idea that the Colt M4A1 is no where in sight (Gunslinger Girl is based in Italy, what do you expect), then you would definitely like this short, but well made anime. If you don’t like the idea of big grown men working with little girls, then you might not like this show, however, in my opinion, it felt more of a big brother, little sister relationship. A fratello.

What can be added? Great story, great drawings, quite realistic (at least weapon and tactics-wise)
What I liked, was the idea of fragile little girls, with children's normal problems, but capable of incredible ops. The accuracy in details is fantastic too.
Well, a must-have for any clever manga fan, it will have it's room between Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh!
EDIT : Elsa uses a SIG550 Sniper too, even if she finally doesn't fire it, in ep. 9 or 10, can't remember right now.------------------------------ Strike Team was here! F*ck Armalites, Shotguns Lead The Way!

Too short. WANT MOOOORE!

The story is great, you immediately feel for the leading female, when you are filled in to the circumstances of her joining the organisation, taking in those children who have been left for dead after what could only be described as sickening violence, and the fact that they ghave been bgiven a second life, with the tramumatic past erased makes a conflicting moral dilemma in that you are grateful for it, but at the same time have to consider the implication that the technology used will ultimately end their lives dispite them all being "dead man walking".
The detail to gun is just as stated, fantastic use, and always believable in the weapon handling, in that you won't see any little girls lugging around a M60.
Overall it is Fantastic, watch it!------------------------------ "We should all bear carefully in mind the constitutional safeguards inherent in the monarchy: While the Queen occupies the highest office of state, no one can take over the government. While she is head of the law, no politician can take over the courts. While she is ultimately in command of the Armed Forces, no would-be dictator can take over the Army. The Queen’s only power, in short, is to deny power to anyone else. Any attempt to tamper with the royal prerogative must be firmly resisted.""The monarchy is a political referee, not a political player, and there is a lot of sense in choosing the referee by a different principle from the players. It lessens the danger that the referee might try to start playing..." SEBURO MN-23 - NEWPORT POLICE STANDARD ISSUE

Those interested should check out the manga. I found it much more intruiging than the already excellent anime, despite some translational irks.
Most notable for the gun freaks (hey, that's why we're here, right?) are the 'heavy weapons' that the girls use on occasion when their usual prefered weapons don't pack quite enough punch. These include the FN FAL (Henrietta=always FN in the manga), AUG H-BAR (Angelica=Steyr. Uses a TMP too), and the MG3(!) for Rico.

The pace is a bit slow. The story is not particularly engaging. The ending is not very fulfilling.

There is very little to be said about this great series. My only gripes about it are the slow pace, somewhat dry story, and unfulfilling ending. However, these shortcomings don't stop the series from becoming one of my personal favorites. The amount of attention paid to the details is incredible. The character designs are great and the anime has a realistic feel to it. Watching it is more akin to watching a standard movie instead of an Anime. It scores a solid 8 on my scale, enough to secure it a place among my treasured collection.
The republican factionists and the southern mobsters the girls frequently kill as a part of their overall counter-terrorism mission are all heavily armed. Below is a list of their weapons:
1. MAC-10 machinepistols
2. AKS-74U sub-machineguns
3. AK-47S assault rifles
4. AK-47 assault rifles
5. GLOCK 17 pistols
6. 92FS pistols
7. AK-103 assault rifle
8. Five-seveN pistol
9. Skorpion machinepistols |

Strange concept, many episode overlaps

Gunslinger Girls Volume 1
Well I'll give my two cents on Gunslinger Girls.
I found this anime to be pretty interesting despite it's strange concept. To avoid repeating what's already been said by other reviewers, I'll just make points on the things I liked most.
One it has it's own philosophy and methodology to approaching the moral issues it presents, making government created? girls who kill terrorists not even remotely and issue and instead it is the nature of the interactions with others that is the real focus point. Also the very frank way they have anything happen in the series is very reminiscent of Kafka and makes one, at least me, have to stop and think about what just happened.
Of course the presence of guns adds to the overall greatness of this series. It's one of a few real pieces of media where the P90 plays a prominent role and still maintains a realistic gun use (and explanations on how their used).
Finally the the overall graphics of the series caught my eye. Visually it's amazing using vivid colors and a great character renderings.
On the parts I think are negatives, the big one is the overuse of overlaps. The first three episodes could easily be condensed into 1 episode due to the constant rerefrences and reuse of scenes. This is a trend through the whole 1st season and personally I found it to be there either to stretch the short episodes or because the writers didn't want to simply assume the viewer knew what was going on by the third episode.
The only other item I found to be a negative was the fact that there were, needless to say, strange, as the first reviewer put "pedo" concepts at times, notably the relationship between Lauro and Elsa (granted this is more of a reverse problem, very "Hard Candy" esq) and between the two protagonists.
Overall though I liked this anime and although I have the 2nd Season I'm yet to watch it (I look forward to it though).------------------------------ Never argue with a gun, it may argue back... United States Corps of Cadets, USMA Cadet, United States Army 2012 "For More Than Ourselves"
