First off, I am reviewing the dvd and it's contents not the actual event. With that clear the dvd menu is oddly sequenced. You can start the entire movie with one click or you can do scene selection, pretty standard stuff. However, in the bonus materials menu is night footage and behind the scenes footage. I guess they were trying to fill space to create a bonus section, as the night footage they have was actually one complete mission that could have awarded points to either team. In my opinion this should have been placed in the main movie, where it would have flowed better. As for behind the scenes, I usually watch them after the main movie, but alot of these contents seem to point to stuff to come in the movie. So it would make more sense to watch this BEFORE the movie.
The main movie is divided into three scenarios that were well thought out and complicated. In one such scenario, charlie co. had occupied a village, while there, they were to provide protection to the villagers and help allow daily activities to occur (i.e., church services, mayor elections, etc.). In that process, delta co. managed to caputure and ally with some of the key villagers (such as the church pastor who didn't hold a service, but instead urged the church-goers to bear arms against the occupancy).
Intriuging stuff, if we could see the action.
You notice, I refer to this dvd, often, as a movie. It seems that's what they were going for.
The storylines and plots were the main focus of the edited footage so much so that alot of the action was lost on the cutting room floor. Personally, the event organizer should have went with scopevm again (the editors of Irene 2). They seemed to have captured and showed ALOT of the combat action in a more presentable way. Anyway, not to dog vision media group because the setup was outstanding, it was just more for a uhhhhhhh... George Lucas film. It's almost as if they were trying to create scripted footage out of an unscripted event. I mean its airsoft not star wars, as an airsofter I want to see action with a capitol A.
Each event was separated by sponsor commercials, which again it's airsoft, so they were either pretty sad or repeats from past dvd's. I think that I prefer the setup of past dvd's that had commercials at the end of the movie but also as an option in the menu. However, they were well placed and short enough to be non-intrusive to the flow of the dvd.
Apparently, they had cameras everywhere, judging from the footage, including the infamous striker helmet cam and even the facility cameras. From this they supposedly acquired 12 hours+ of raw footage (that I read in the lion claws forum was the reason it took so long to release). It should have been all out action on a two dvd set, right? Wrong, they hardly showed any of the armored carriers that were all over the photographs. The flares and explosions also lacked the coverage they deserved. they showed VERY few actual skirmishes and shootouts. In all, i'm guessing there was about fifteen to twenty minutes of serious pellet action.
It's kind of a double edged sword. Even though they dropped the ball with the action shots, the editing was still high quality with the exception of a few minor items. One instance, Mcknight was giving a speech in the behind the scenes and they cut his sentence off to go to another scene. Just minor stuff.
I would recommend this as an addition to any collection, but don't expect Irene 2 action, it's just not there. It kinda reminds me of the irene 1 and original lion claws footage as it was more of a documentary like they were. In that respect, if that's what they were going for it was decent, not excellent, just decent. However, thinking we were past the documentary days, I set my expectations for this too high. Although I wasn't completely disappaointed, I was let down.
The best description is: THIS IS AIRSOFT FROM A FILM MAKERS EYES AND NOT AN AIRSOFTERS EYES.
All told, in my opinion they should release another dvd with just combat action footage to make an Irene 3 series (maybe two more discs).
