Description: Hot on the heels of the excellent M14 that beat Tokyo Marui to the market comes G&G's version of the venerable AK47, the RK103. Introduced after the RK104, this is the full rifle version with the only difference being the longer barrel, gasblock and compensator. It is also the 4th player in a now crowded market filled with the Tokyo Marui AK47, Classic Army SLR and the ICS AK74M. It could very well be the best G&G product if not the best AK AEG to date.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): High metal content, fit and finish, ease of upgrade/disassembly, solid, large battery capacity, version 3 gbox, large mag capacity, upgraded internals
Cons: Sights, no trades, poor lubing, longish magazine, no scope mount, rattling sling mount

The Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 or AK47 was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov around the 7.62mm bullet. In 1974 it was down-calibered for the 5.45mm bullet that was intended to be more accurate and damaging with less overpenetration. The evolution included a shift to plastic furniture and magazines. It was designated oddly enough as the AK74. The latest version is the AK74M with the side mount for scope rails and a side folding solid stock. In much the same way America kept the larger .308 calibre in its inventory through the M14, the Soviet Union revived the 7.62mm with the AK103. It is this version that G&G replicated in the RK103 and 104.

Fit and finish is the best G&G has come up with to date. Paint on metal bits is well laid on with no sign of blemish or discoloration. It also seems to be quite durable after several skirmishes and disassembly sessions. Markings on the receiver are crisp, deep and well made though serial numbers and trademarks are notably missing. However, these are omissions that do not affect the desirability of the AEG. Markings on the rear sight are also very well made with uniform depth all throughout.

Plastic bits are a somewhat puzzling. The pistol grip appears somewhat rubbery and smooth, the foregip has a bit more texture and the stock is very rough. I'm not sure if the finish is the same as the real deal. Seams are present but since these are plastic in the real thing I would not be surprised if they can be found there as well.

Rattle...save for the receiver cover and the rear sling mount, there's none.

Function is also exemplary. Beginning with the magazine, the fit is TIGHT thanks to a rubber insert. No shaking or wobbling. Magazine lock and release is positive and the lever does not feel like its gonna break off. Winding effort is just right and a tad long due to the large capacity of the feed tube.

The battery compartment is quite spacious and rumored to handle up to a 10v large batt. I only use a 9.6 for all my AEG's so I really did not bother to check. A slight quirk here is the use of 2 screws for the buttplate. Downright annoying.

Cocking lever is fully retractable with sufficient spring resistance to feel realistic. People will be spending time pulling and dropping it just to hear the sweet sound of metal impacting metal. Pulling it back reveals the metal (yes, metal) hopup that is both simple to operate and retains its setting very well. I've yet to confirm if this already has a tight 6.04 inner barrel like the M14.

Sights are adjustable for elevation but lateral motion of the rear sight is not controlled in any manner. This is a trait of the real AK faithfully reproduced by G&G. Rear sight adjustment is very simple also and the lock button is positive and smooth to operate. Front sight is rather loose but easily remedied with some threadlock compound.

Selector lever was initially loose but easily fixed by tightening the mounting screw. Once fixed, firing mode selection was straightforward and positive. Migrants from other AEG's will have to get used to the SAFE-FULL-SEMI sequence as well as the unergonomic position of the lever.

ROF, range and accuracy are all GENERALLY excellent. Groupings in full auto are relatively tight. The sights however do not utilize the rifle's capabilities fully particularly due to the unregulated lateral motion. Still, with the 600 round magazine capacity, sending a rain of BB's towards your opponent is a viable practice. It is also in keeping with how the real AK is employed anyway.

Internally no suprises, it has the version 3 gearbox finished in black and a motor that looks like a Systema or ICS unit. It does have metal bearings preinstalled along with a ported piston head with bearing and what appears to be an air seal nozzle. Items not found on Marui units. Gears are unlubed (at least not enough to my liking) and I did find a little fine tuning of the shim work was needed.

All in all a great kit if not the best G&G has come out with to date. If you're in the market for something to use on OPFOR or technical role days this is the rifle for you. I'm frankly looking forward to an SD version of their new PM5 replica of the MP5. It also shows that G&G is well on the way to Marui quality.

Enjoy. :P
