Finally got mine after wanting one from pretty much as soon as that came out. Heres my thoughts on it so far.
On opening the box, you get greeted with a superb looking gun. The hi cap mag is already loaded in the gun in the box and all the extras you get are the cleaning rod and sight adjustment tool. Standard CA stuff, but then im not buying a cardboard box!
On picking up the gun, I first realised that it doesn't weigh as much as I thought it was going to. Even with a very bulky stock, the gun feels well balanced and is nice to hold.
The plastic body of the gun feels good to the touch and of a good quality, and all the metal parts on the reel steel are metal on this gun too.
My only concern when buying this gun was the fact that it had a fixed scope and that if it broke, it would be impossible to replace without buying an entirely new upper receiver. However, the scope feels very solid indeed and like it could take any hits coming its way and not be damaged by them. The glass lenses are set a bit of the way into the scope so they are protected somewhat from bb hits.
USING THE GUN
This gun takes a mini sized battery right in the back of the stock. Simply pop the rubber butt plate off to gain access to the battery connector plug. In the space for the battery, you can also gain access to the fuse. For comparison, the fuse and wiring seems of the same type used in the latest M15 series of rifles released by CA and seem to be of a very good quality.
With the battery in and the hi-cap mag loaded and wound, its time to shoot. I set up a small target at the end of my garden (about 8 to 10m away; only a small garden I’m afraid) to unleash some plastic death on.
The magazines for the aug are almost identical in size to an m16 type mag, so fitting them in existing magazine pouches won't be a problem.

Just a tip, when loading this gun, and im sure its the same for any bull pup, I found it easiest to hold the gun with you non firing hand on the front grip and use your trigger hand to do the loading. I’m not sure why it’s easier, it just is.
Heres a quick pic of the mag well for you all, pretty standard stuff in there really.

As mentioned, the gun has a scope already on it, which cannot be removed. Not that I would want to. The scope is very clear and can easily be used weather you're wearing goggles, glasses or a full face mask (like I do)

The scope has a simple cross hair with a small circle at the centre with a 1.5x magnification. It can be used easily with both eyes open which im told is the best way to aim a gun. The scope has back up iron sights on the top of it as well and they are very similar to the sights on a pistol. Not the easiest to aim with them, but they are functional and do work none the less.
On to the firing. Before I did, I had to clean the barrel out, as there was a lot of mess in it from where the muzzle had chewed up the polystyrene box. Another amazing feature of this gun is that it can be very easily disassembled for cleaning. The barrel and front grip are easily removed and replaced by simply moving a locking nail and sliding out the barrel. Simply remove, clean, replace.
Out of the box, my scope was waaay off to the right and down. However, I couldn't be bothered about that at the time because something more fantastic was distracting me.
The rate of fire from this gun in automatic is phenomenal! I have NEVER seen a stock AEG fire faster than this; it really does have to be seen to be believed. Fair enough my grouping in auto was appalling, but I think the huge grin on my face prevented me from aiming properly.
Anyway, I digress. Unlike most guns, this one doesn’t have a traditional fire select lever. Instead, the amount of death fired depends on how far you pull the trigger. Initially I thought this would be a bad thing and that just 1mm too far would see me empty half a mag into a target. It turns out this isn’t the case. You pull the trigger back until you feel it stop and you fire 1 shot. Then, if you pull through the resistance you engage full auto. It will not be easy to 'accidentally' fire in full auto if you only intend on firing 1 shot.
In semi auto, and when I was really trying, I managed to get my shots all within an inch or two of each other, which I expected from a gun with a barrel this long. However, the small range over which I was trying this gun out on severely restricted my ability to adjust the hop up and scope accurately. I will have to wait for my next skirmish to do these. Therefore at this time I can't reliably comment on this guns accuracy or range.
ILL ADD A MORE DETAILED REVIEW OF ITS ACCURACY AND THE SCOPE AFTER I SKIRMISH IT.(added)
This gun is nuch noisier than my others, but I guess this has something to do with the fact that the gearbox and motor is directly next to your ear when you fire it, unlike other traditional shaped guns where the gears and motor are in front of your face by a few inches. This probably also explains why initially I thought there was somehting wrong with it because I could hear the motor whizzing round far more on this gun than on my others.
The hop up is a barrel type hop up. It is accessed by pulling back the cocking handle, which can also be locked back for ease of adjustment (and to remove the barrel if you want to)

That’s the handle held back by a small notch that you pop it into, similar to on an mp5.

And the open ejection port, showing the hop up unit.
Before buying thid gun, I had held the marui aug (civ version) and this is how I knew I liked them and wanted one. On the marui aug, I noticed the front handle was very wobbly and felt very loose.
The CA front folding grip is much sturdier than on the marui. It still has a tiny bit of wobble side to side in it, but not enough to make it noticable in normal use, and no where near as much as the marui one. Id consider this problem with the marui most definately fixed by CA.
The front grip on the CA can effortlessly support the weight of the gun too, if you ever want to hold you aug out in front of you that is (which I did, just to test its sturdyness)
The final thing I noticed about my aug, was that there is a slight bit of give, about 1mm max, between the metal upper body and the rest of the plastic part of the gun that it is attached to. Again, this is not noticable when using the gun. Its only by chance when I was putting it down I heard it rock and wandered 'what was that'.
After a bit of enquiring on the arnies forums, it turns out this is normal however, the marui ones do it, and even the real steel augs do it to. Without completely diassembling the gun, which im not prepared to do, Im told its due to the fact that only a single pin holds the metal upper to the plastic lower of the gun.
But the main thing is, this slight movement does not affect the firing of the gun. It fires fine, so im not going to worry about it, and neither should you.
To summarise a painfully long review (sorry about that, but I did want to be thorough)
Good points
Very compact gun for such a long barrel
Amazing looks (just like marmite tastes good)
Well balanced and easy to handle
Good scope
Rate of fire
Bad points
The play between some parts of the gun (even though I’m told this is normal)
The fact the scope is non removable (not a problem for me, but it could be for some)
Stop reading now unless you want to know why I think this is the only gun you ever need own...
I bought this gun firstly because I love the looks of it, but secondly so that I had a gun to use when I knew Id be doing some open woodland and cqb all in the same one game. My m15 is too long for cqb, but I would always choose it over my g36c for woodland.
The following picture illustrates exactly why the AUG can be used for anything.

It is almost exactly the same length as the g36c, so its fine for cqb work. Its even evicted the g36 from its case because it fits better in the star gun case than in my full length rifle case.
The aug has a barrel equal in length to an m16, so its fine for woodland. And it will always be more accurate than any other shorter barreled gun, however you use it.
The folding front handle means you can carry it rifle style or front gripped style, whenever you want!
EDIT 1,after the first skirmish.
Took my shiny new paperwieght to its first game yesterday. Yes, I said paperwieght, let me explain.
Now its one thing trying to set a hop up and zero a scope in a small back garden, but it will not fire how you want it to in a woodland game. Therefore I took it to the range to set it up properly.
Filled mag, wound mag, loaded gun, fired. Got no more than 50 rounds through it then it started dry firing. Fair enough, its just stopped feeding I thought. I took the mag out and several (not one or two as normal) bb's fell out. It didnt strike me as strange at first and I just put the mag back in. Tried firing and fount that the trigger had jammed. It moved back a little bit, and im only talking a few mm before I couldnt move it any more, but it wasnt locked in position like it was when the safety is on.
I checked the safety was off completey, it was. I removed the barrel assembly to check nothing was stuck in there, there wasnt. I have no idea why my gun has broken.
After much cursing, sulking, ridicule and general angryness that it had broken I packed it away before the day had even started. Only the good kills I got with my other CA has convinced me to take it back to Airsoft Arnoury for a repair/replacement gun (which thay have said they will do, good chaps thay are) and give the CA Aug a second chance before I ask for my money back. (
I am willing to give this gun one more chance however before I write it off as a waste of money, so Ill add edit part 2 once I have got the new/repaired Aug. (added)
EDIT 2: Aug #2
Got a brand new aug today after being told that the problem had been identified with the broken old one but that they didn't know what caused it or how to fix it. So after waiting a month of phonecalls to AA, ive finally got a brand new AUG.
It's exactly the same (read... amazing) as the old one (suprise suprise) The scope was wayy off to the right and down, just like the old one. The gun muzzle had tried to eat its way out of the box so the barrel needed cleaning, just like the old one. The only differece in this one to the old one is that there isnt lube oozing from every available orophice. I dont know if this is good or bad, it just looks a bit tidier though.
Now for the all important crunch issue. The trigger. This one works, just like the other one did for the first 1000 or so rounds. So far so good. Im going to put a few 100 more through it later though just so I know I havent got an early lemon. One thing that I have noticed is that this ones trigger isnt quite as stiff as the old one was, and the transition from semi to full is a much smoother operation.
The ROF is still blisteringly fast and the fps seems on par with the old aug and my other stock CA gun.
This leads me to believe that the problem with the old Aug was that something must have not been finished correctly with reguards to the trigger and its moving parts and this caused it to stick. Im going to put a few more rounds through it hoping to exceed the number it took to break the old one.
The only negative points I can find on this second aug is that the front handle seems a bit wobblier than on the first one. Not as wobbly as the TM aug, but still wobblier than I remember. But maybe im just looking for problems with it now...
Even though this one apears to be fine, im still not completely comfortable with this gun at the moment. It will have to make it through its first skirmish and still work at the end before im happy with it again. So until then, my opinion of it has gone from 9/10 to 7/10. Update after its first sirmish folks.
EDIT # (LOST COUNT!)
So I scirmished this at the weekend, and I was bowled over by its performance even in the heavy rain. I read somewhere that the aug is efficient, and armalites are sexy, and now I completely agree with it. Side by side, my M15 still looks the best, but on the battlefield nothing touches the aug.
It is the most accurate AEG I own, probably due to the long barrel coupled with a brilliant scope and I got some fantastic kills with it that I normally would never had made using just iron sights. I will probably soon be investing in a tight barrel and metal hop up to take full advantage of this guns potential.
The range on it had people running for cover even though I thought I was just taking pot shots at them, and the RoF sure as hell kept their heads down once they got there!
Thirdly the compactness of the gun allowed me to take full advantage of my small frame + small gun + small tree stump to take cover from an M249.
There were only two downsides to using this gun in battle. The first was that whilst the front handle is much sturdier than the marui, when I was just sitting waiting for the next attacker and fidgiting, the slight give is apparent. But whilst using the gun its absolutely fantastic and you dont notice any movement whatsoever.
The second was my fault and is very easily rectified. I was expecting to be using about the same amount of ammo per game as I normall do in my M15 (as I am comparing the two guns very closely) and oh how wrong I was. I took 2 hi-caps thinking that would be enough and ended up reloading both in the dead zome mid game. As the RoF is higher than my other guns I found I was getting through more ammo than normal. A stupid mistake I should have realised. More mags on order soon I think.
Only my perfect gun would get a 10/10, and this isnt it as it isnt perfect. I also feel too many people buy a gun and then rate it 9/10 because they own it and therefore theyre cool and so is the gun, so it doesnt get a 9/10 either. 8.5/10 would be perfect as this gun really did perform very very well when compared to my other AEG's, but seeing as I cant give that score it gets a more than deserved 8/10. |

There is very little to say about this AEG that hasn't already been said, although I had no problems with performance.

Well, against all the stuff I had heard about Chinese internals, I swapped my AK 47 Spetsnaz and bought a CA Steyr AUG from Airsoftwarehouse, and promptly recieved it the next morning - top stuff.
Ripped open packing, to be greeted by a meaty gun, a cleaning rod and the manuels. NO BB'S!
Loaded mag, inserted mag and pressed the big black button on the side (half asleep, thought it was possibly the mag catch, even though I am very familier with AUGs!) and promptly dropped the receiver!
2nd attempt, and the gun fired beautifully, on semi and full auto.
However, the gun also fired wildly to the right as of reviewer #1's finding. And the adjustment nobs don't seem to be able to compensate this.....oh.
And, again, like reviewer #1's gun, the trigger jammed stuck - after 10 mins. Oh dear.
Being sent back now, the company were very understanding and will replace my gun with a pre-tested and evaluated model....I await in hope for a marked improvement, or it is the TM version next!
UPDATE - Got my replacement, again, super fast delivery! Gun seems perfect and I look forward to skirmishing it. The word from AI magazines Editor (I met him at Beltring - top guy) is that it scored a perfect 10 in everything they threw at it, and is the best they've found. So does that say it all?!
2nd UPDATE - Gun sent back to store - again, as was only shooting 210-245 fps out of the box on it's first skirmish. I await developments on that front. This is a gun to approach with caution, as I believe it has a few flaws that CA haven't quite negated, and that 'Ai' also didn't pick up on in their review. Unless it is just my gun of course...!
3rd Update - Gun came back, with bent barrel...do'h! Barrel sent back, new one sent, gun in one piece now. Skirmished with it, gun is now awesome. Recommended. Also, props for great service from Airsoft Warehouse.------------------------------ שלום עליכםwww.stopwar.org.ukUKARA No. CSA00165 "I've got no new act to amuse you I've got no desire to use you, you know But anything that I could do Would never be good enough for you." - E.S.

Well after some hard decision making and money saving, I finally was able to buy the Classic Army AUG A1 as my first non-Marui airsoft gun. Had to sell my Marui Sig 552 to get my hands on this beauty, and I don't regret that decision at all, as I find this gun much more valuable than the Sig.
I'm not going to go into the basic review details, as the first reviewer here did an excellent job with pics and details. I will share my experience with the gun though...
Upon opening the battery compartment to insert my battery a first time, a really strange thing occured. After removing the rubber butt, an extremely dirty (like almost pitch black) bb rolled out of the compartment. Kinda freaked at the moment, but nothing strange or bad seemed to happen to the gun after 2000+ rounds, althought thats not enough to prove it's reliablility, it's enough to tell if it's an early lemon.
Aside from that strange happening, everything seemed great out-of-the-box. I did have a little wobble in the upper reciever, but nothing to affect the performance of the gun or even bother me in the game. There is no getting around the wobble IMO (unless modified of course), it's just something you sacrifice for a great takedown feature. The firepower is incredible for a $288.00 AEG, chrono'd about 330 FPS. Range was a little better than the Sig, although stock AEG's range don't differ to much...
The accuracy is good, not terrible, but not outstanding considering the barrel length. I'm gonna say it would be comparable to any compact carbine sized AEG if you were sighting the gun with iron sights. But the scope definatley improves your accuracy even with the average hop up and inner barrrel, as it is easy to adjust and extremely effective for it's assualt rifle role. The scope is definatley one of the greatest aspects of this gun, as it's a light years ahead of Marui's A1 scope and is great for the assualt role. The hop up is decent, but it would definately be wise to buy a new unit and a tightbore barrrel to further enhance the accuracy.
For some reason I too had the trigger lock-up on me when I put in about 200rnds. It locked up about 1-2 a millimeter before going full auto, so it you even touched the trigger, it would go full auto crazy for a sec or 2. But unlike the other reviewers here, I was able to fix the problem myself, as all I had to do was push forward the plastic section above the trigger that moves back as you pull the trigger piece back. I have NEVER had a problem since, and will not be afraid to fix it myself should it happen again. Not a huge problem overall.
Pros:
Great features: foregrip, manuverability, scope++, takedown feature
Firepower: The ROF is fantastic for a mini battery, great FPS, good range and accuracy
Usefulness: You can go anywhere with an AUG, from a semi-large SMG to a manuverable DMR to even a LMG! Even keeping it in stock formation is still very useful
Internals: Some nice pre-upgraded stock parts, good ole version 3 gearbox, most all Marui Upgrades should work just fine!
Cons
Trigger lockup: NOT SOMETHING TO FREAK OUT ABOUT! Peroid. Just at least try to do what I did, and if it still doesn't work, get more advice online or take it to repair in a store. This is not something that should stray most noobs away, unless you are paraniod about ANY mishap in a gun. AEG's aren't perfect, ever, even from Marui, and never will be.
Performance: Accuracy and range could be better, but with the extremely easy and basic upgrade parts (thanks to a nifty takedown feature), this should be a very budget upgrade thats easy to do indivisually and should easily improve the AUG into an even better assault rifle. (great scope+improved performance= kickbutt)
Some wobble: As I stated before, it's something you move past, as the takedown feature is more than worth a little wobble.
Overall: Definatly worth the buy! If you plan on making this AEG a project gun (mainly a DMR or LMG), than I would obviously suggest that you wait for the A2 to come out to so you get the weaver rail to put on your own scope. This is another great Classic Army that can defiantely turn heads with just a few upgrades.------------------------------ Who's the Phantom Ripper, and who's the Frog Man?

Classic Army AUG a1
Review by Greatwatermelon
**First off, I want to say my review will not compare the Tokyo Marui AUG because I respect TM very much.
First Impressions: I bought my CA AUG a1 from Airsoft Extreme. The Aug is very heavy, neat, and not too long. I bought the Aug A1(fixed scope) because I did not have the budget to buy nice opticals to mount and, to me, this military version (fixed scope) looks very nice with its Olive Drab paint job. The trades are on right side of stock and unique serial numbers are imprinted on the bolt cover. My dad bought it for me for $290 dollars on December 7, 2006. Thanks dad!
Appearance: I always seen the bullups (SA80, L85, AUG) as an ugly blob, but my view of it changed after I saw the BE Aug military. When I finally saw the OD Classic Army AUG a1, I fell in love with it. :o From there on, I never view the AUG as an ugly gun.
Feel: The gun is made out of polymer for lower receiver and aluminum for upper reciever. The aug is full metal meaning it is just like the real steel. The polymer feels great, NO creak/flex and is very solid that rounds that hit my Aug did nothing. The aluminum feels great and has not bent or scratch even when falling on it or being shot at. Even though I have never held a real Aug, I heard from others that Classic Army did a great job to how the real steel feels like.
The red color shows what parts are metal (on left side).
Build Quality:
Add on (1/28/07): First off, I have to say, I am really stoked that Airsoft Retreat Newspage has just posted about AI magazine and CA Aug a1. The Classic Army Aug a1 has been given the Top Gun Award by Airsoft International Magazine. This years Classic Army AUG a1 boxes will be sold with a square logo stating "Top Gun Award" from AI magazine. This announcement makes me very pleased to have bought an Aug but my box will not be carrying that square logo because I bought my Aug almost 2 months ago. Oh! I am so sad. ::)
The quality of the gun impressed me and convinced me that it is well built. Like every other Aug even the real steel, there is a easy dissemble system. Just press the square button near the magazine and the upper receiver slides right out. It makes upgrading simple and easy.
Some common complaints from Aug owners is the wobbly vertical grip and play between upper/lower receiver. The wobble in vertical foregrip happens even on the real steel Aug as well. After a while, the wobbly vertical grip does not annoy me at all, if it really does bother, a new Guarder pin for the foregrip easily cures the wobbling. The movement between upper metal receiver and lower plastic receiver will always happen because of the easy dissembling feature. You will not notice the shaking between recievers if you hold gun horizontally as if you are shooting, but I found I could temporarily fix this shaking if I played with the dissemble button. The play between recievers is a sacrifice but is defintely worth it, because the easy dissemble feature is very helpful.
The 8.4v 1400mah Intellect battery fits perfectly into the Classic Army AUG stock. The battery cover is rubber. I doubt a 9.6v battery would fit unless it is a custom one or fit in battery pouch.
Another thing to note about the Aug, it is very heavy on the trigger hand depending how you hold the gun. I was a cymbal player for my school's marching band so it did not take long for me to get use to its weight. The scope is very nice and easy to see through even though it is only 1.5X magnification, it is good enough to get precise shots from it. Since the fixed scope is not high enough, you will not be able to use the scope with your full face mask unless you buy a tight profile paintball mask. (You adjust the crosshair with an adjuster tool)
My Classic Army AUG magazine is internally terrible, the spring keeps snapping even though I keep fixing it. A likely possibility to why the hi-cap spring snapped is because of the cold winter temperature. The CA magazine did cause problems later on... I do recommend Tokyo Marui AUG magazines over CA mags.
As for internals, only first couple batches of Augs experienced gear/piston stripping due to meshing problems. That problem should be cleared up already. Overall, internals are very good and should not need any replacing in stock form. If you are very compelled to upgrade/change something, I would recommend replacing the stock polycarb piston with a better aftermarket piston. Either than that, the gearbox comes pre-upgraded with Die-caste gearbox, metal spring guide, 7mm steel bushing, their newer CA steel gears, polycarb piston/piston head and air seal nozzle. My Aug has shot 10k rounds without any internal problems.
Function: The Aug has the same trigger function as its real steel. The Aug fires semi when the trigger is pressed halfway to a stop. Pull the trigger all the way and the Aug will fire in full auto. The safety is not a selector switch but a square rod that goes through the body. With your trigger hand, you can easily turn the safety off. I found this trigger function very useful and efficient when you are in a very intense fire zone.
Description/How to Fix -Trigger Jamming
You might have heard about a trigger jam situation in the trigger system, and I have came across it during a skirmish. After firing almost 3k rounds during a skirmish, my trigger jams on full auto and just kept blank firing for 20 seconds until I disconnected the battery. To fix this problem, you push the tab forward above the trigger system. If you wonder what caused the problem, it started with the Classic Army magazine. My CA mag's hi-cap spring is constantly on snapping no matter how I fix it. When the magazine broke in the middle of my skirmish, I turned the gun over reinserting fiercely to see if I can get bb's to roll into the chamber. Some bb's rolled into the trigger assembly so when I did fire in full auto, not only was magazine not feeding, the trigger became stuck.
To fix this trigger problem, there are 3 things you should do to elimate the problem completely:
(take off upper receiver)
1. Clean and grease with silicone oil the trigger assembly
2. Turn the receiver upside down and sideways to get any bb's out
3. Push the tab forward (not too hard)
After doing those 3 things, you should not experience any trigger jam, just make sure bb's don't roll into the trigger assembly.
gap where bb's fall through into trigger assembly
Performance: When I tested the Aug at Airsoft Extreme, I was nervous to get the last Classic Army AUG a1 available for that week because it was off the display shelf. But when the store front man and I tested the Aug, it chronoed from low of 337 to as high as 346 fps. SOLD! The ROF with a 8.4v 1400 MaH intellect was about 800-900 rpm.
I took it back home and tried firing at cans or boxes, shots curved away from a coke can at 15 feet away. I took it back to the store unpleased because I knew the stock bucking is terrible. The store front man switched the bucking and barrel to be safe. Now, the gun is as accurate as it should be. I did not test its grouping with paper targets, but I was able to get head shots from about approx. 100 feet away and body shots farther than that. The hop up works very well. The inner barrel length is 509mm long and 6.08mm standard brass barrel.

A video of my CA Aug firing in semi and auto.
You will see a bb rolling out of barrel for first shot because the hop up is completely off.
Accessories: There is not many accessories for the Aug.
This is most of the Assessories:
-Phantom Silencer Kit (2 sizes)
-Short barrel (cqb)/Longer barrel and different flashiders
-Nitro Side Rail to mount lasers or flash lights (goes under the carry handle/scope/rail)
-Custom jobs (longer barrel with TOP m60 bipod)
-silencer
-Drum magazine
As for what magazine for your Aug, always buy Tokyo Marui magazines. Tm aug mags feed reliablely and flawlessly, fit better, and the material of the mag feels like polymer too.
Modifications:
Definite modification needed:
-New bucking
Recommended:
-New piston w/piston head for spring upgrades
-Battery (9.6v custom on upgrades)
Possible good upgrades:
- Tightbore
- New cylinder set and tappet plate
Conclusion: I looked for an accurate aeg that will not b.s. my shots, good rof, good fps without upgrading, and compact for its feature. Extras that were surprisingly helpful were the easy dissemble feature and trigger system. Overall, I am very pleased with my Classic Army Aug A1. I told you I would not compare between Classic Army and Tokyo Marui Aug because I own an Classic Army and I know Tokyo Marui have very good quality externally and internally. Both are good guns, nothing can go wrong picking either. Overall, the Classic Army Aug a1 suits me very well.
Pros/Cons List:
Pros:
-Good accuracy [new bucking $5] (bull up design allows it)
-Good rof (800-900rpm)
-Good stock fps (330-340 fps avg.)
-Easy Take Down (dissemble) feature
-Compact (little longer than mp5)
-Nice scope
-Good externals
-Good internals
Cons:
-Wobble of foregrip, upper/lower receiver (due to take down feature)
-Bad stock bucking
