Ace Combat 5: The Unsung war; the pinnacle of the Ace Combat series. The music, the storyline, the graphics; everything about this game envelops you as you play. I have never played any other arcade-styled game that had such an intense storyline as this.
You take on the role of Blaze, a young pilot still in the process of earning his wings for the Osean Air Force when during a routine training exercise, you are forced to intercept an unidentified recon aircraft. More unidentified aircraft appear to escort the spy plane home from bearing 280; Yuktobania. And then, the worst thing that could happen happens; your flight lead, the legendary Ace of Hearts, is shot down while protecting one of the other pilots. Now you become the Squadron Leader. Using the new Wingman Command system, can you lead the Osean Military to victory against the country of Yuktobania?

I don't know what this has to do with airsoft, except that I enjoy playing both airsoft and this game.
Anyways, for those who weren't familiar with the old Ace Combat series, this game may appear to be a flight sim when you look at the box, but it is not, it is just a glorified (very much so) arcade shooter; and that could be either a good thing or a bad thing depend on your taste.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great game, which captures some of the essentials of flight combat (yeah right, like I know what real flight combat is like ) without bog you down with every little detail about how to fly an airplane. The movement control is as simple as an FPS except you roll a lot instead of strifing. The physics is at its minimum. Your plane (and controller) very rarely vibrates a bit, and you won't experience blackout no matter what aerial stunts you try.
You have one type of standard missle that's good for shooting everything that's within range. You also get to have special missile specific to the planes you choose. When you are out of missiles, you can always count on your gun with unlimited ammo. You don't have any counter measures, but to dodge an incoming missile, all you need to do is bank to the side. You usually don't get to take off or land, if you wish, there's the option for those things, but in certain missions only.
Besides the good graphics, sound effects, and music, what the game really shines is your attractive young asian female wing-lady. :D Just kidding, but she is certainly a big bonus. What the game does best is its gameplay. With a plot that could've been from a Tom Clancy thriller, you get to fly missions that's progressively challenging with a little nice surprise almost in every mission, and the mission objectives keeps changing from one mission to the next, so you'll get to do a lot more than just dog fight with enemy fighters (though you do that most often); if it's your first time playing through the campaign, you can expect something new in every mission, and you won't have seen it all until the very end.
In conclusion, it is a much enjoyable game. I just wish there's the option to include some more realistic aspects of flying, but I guess if I want a true flight sim, I'd dig out an old copy of Jane's flight sim game for the PC. On a side note, the old captain had an uncanny resemblance to George Clooney.
