When I began airsoft, I had three things on my mind – gun, clothing, and gear. After I picked up my first gun, a Tokyo Marui G3SG/1, I realized that I needed clothing and gear to maximize my performance in the field and carry all the things I need. I began doing some research online, looking for the right kind of clothes.
At first, I was very tempted to buy a set of PROPPER U.S. urban BDUs. A good friend of mine had a set for CQB action and he looked positively intimidating in those and all-black gears and guns. However, I soon realized that urban BDUs wouldn’t get me anywhere good in a woodland setting. With that in mind, I began looking at green-themed gear.
For a time, I wanted to get a set of U.S.M.C. MARPAT. But the digital pattern just didn’t hold my interest long enough. Besides, it wasn’t particularly effective in my sort of environment. Frustrated, I turned to the most common of uniforms – the U.S. woodland.
My G3SG/1 uses magazines designed for 7.62x51 mm NATO rounds – not the smaller 5.56x45 mm NATO, used by weapons like the AR-15 series. The large G3 20-round magazines seriously limited my choices in vests. I didn’t want to further limit myself in getting a good vest. Since vests in either woodland or olive drab were very common and matched woodland BDUs, I made up my mind.
I bought my BDUs from Jack’s Army and Navy surplus store right here in my neighborhood. The elderly gentleman at the counter had the patience to help me find the perfect size in the 100 degrees Fahrenheit heat…. I bought the jacket and pants new for $80 plus tax. The brand name is PROPPER, whose products are of good quality.
The jacket has four large pockets with flaps in the front. I usually use them to keep loose items. Once or twice, I even had to dump spent magazines in them. The pants have four large pockets with flaps, too. Two are in the back and two down the legs. Two smaller pockets are at the waist.
To go with the BDUs, I wear a slim-type chest rigging in woodland camo, a Guarder Tornado thigh holster in olive drab, and a combat knife. I wear my boots bloused – I tighten the strings round the ankles of my pants and tuck them into the boots.
So how durable is the material? Very. At my first skirmish, I had to crawl around and dive for cover. The BDUs took it all. After a washing, they are still good as new with no fading. At one point, I almost slipped down a steep slope. My partner grabbed the back of my jacket’s collar and yanked me back up. My jacket had to hold my 6’4”, 220-pound self for a few seconds just from the collar. It didn’t tear.
The BDUs are also pretty comfortable. They breathe so you wouldn’t be overheated. They can also keep you warm in a 50 degrees Fahrenheit environment. I would definitely recommend a set for any beginner. |

I received this Propper BDU through my Civil Air Patrol squadron. It is standard issue at the moment, but I know they're switching over to ABU's.
Anyways, this is one of the best BDU's I have ever worn (next to my ACU set, issue). I have had all sorts of BDU's, from Ultra Force, issue BDU's, and Propper. Ultra Force just didn't cut it for me; I believe Propper is far superior to Ultra Force.
The break in time for this particular BDU actually took quite a while - the buttons, longer. Another pet peeve of mine is the strings. Yes, I know there are always strings hanging out here and there, but after a thorough inspection, and I thought I got all of them cut, there were still more! It's more of cosmetics than anything else.
After this went through the wash over 10 times it STILL hasn't shown any signs of fading.
Durability: I have tripped, fallen on rocks, ran through thorn bushes (an entire field of it), to no complaint. It doesn't show mud, dirt, or crap on the floor of a hangar

That's what knocked it down a point, the pet peeves. I'm just that sort of person, so it's really personal preference. Don't stop that from buying it!
