Major Paintball M-12TR Trip Mine:
Contents
As you can see from the picture, the mine comes in a cute little box displaying the ol ‘Jolly Roger’, some information about the product, and an array of cheesy one liners.
The contents included are as follows:
1 x OLIVE DRAB TRIP MINE UNIT
1 x TRIP WIRE (BLACK) AND REEL
1 x MOUNTING BRACKET AND SCREW
1 x GROUND MOUNTING PEG
1 x SPARE CHECK VALVE
Initial Impression
On initial inspection the unit is very robust. The plastic is of a good thickness and looks like it will withstand harsh use. The ground mounting peg is just a glorified tent peg, but this means it is easy to replace if lost. The mounting bracket and screw is to attach to things like trees, but obviously is only useful if you have the time to mount it. (And have a screw driver handy).
The unit is simple in its design and can be pulled in half to clean etc. The unit is very easy to field strip thanks to the 2 removable clips; this makes cleaning the unit a simple procedure. The image below show the unit stripped.
How The Unit Works
The upper chamber houses the CO2 canister (12gm) and the spring and puncturing piece. The lower chamber is the reservoir, where liquids and powders can be expelled and the optional explosion burst tube can installed when required. I will not bore you with the specifics / instructions of operation. Basically the trigger is pulled onto a hook, which is released when the wire is tripped, causing the puncturing unit to open the CO2 canister, the CO2 then flows between the upper chamber and the reservoir via the one way check valve (allowing the CO2 through to the reservoir, but nothing in the reservoir into the upper chamber). The contents of the reservoir are expelled (if any). The CO2 gas inflates the burst tube (if in use) and it explodes – causing a loud report. This device also has a safety switch (see picture). When this is set to on, it does not allow the canister to be punctured if the mine is tripped.
Testing
Before use in game, I was only able to test the device once. This was without a burst tube and using only flour in the reservoir. The flour was misted out nicely, however it made very little noise and would be unlikely to draw the attention of anyone who set it off. In game I was able to set the trip mine and an unwitting victim stumbled into the trap. The black trip wire making it nigh on impossible to see. The noise was excellent and can be heard field wide (almost) – test number 1 successful. The second attempt was rigged to a flag in a capture the flag scenario. This test would also have gone to plan had I not forgotten to take the safety off. The trigger had been engaged, so the little flag thief SHOULD have been ‘dead’ – alas it was not to be. A point to be made is the sub-standard reel that comes with the product. While it’s a snazzy olive drab, it is small and when winding the wire back up, it is very time consuming. I will be transferring this to a cotton reel as soon as possible. This will make for much easier dispersion of wire and also when winding in. Oh, the unit also fits nicely into a utility pocket - most rigs would accomodate this without any trouble.
Conclusion
The unit performed well and although it is a paintball product, it will have excellent applications in airsoft games. The burst tubes are merely a piece of rubber tubing with a clamp around the tip. These should be inexpensive items, however at present they equate to about $2 per piece. Hopefully these can be made by my self. It would be good to see a few more of these on the field. It could make for a very interesting game – especially in ambush scenarios.
On a scale of 1 – 10, I’d rate it an 8. Its major flaws being the wire reel thats it is shipped with (being too small - not the wire, but the spindle thing it sits on) and its inability to fire BBs (but it is a paintball product afterall). At only $69NZD for this mine, it makes it well worthwhile.
*Since Initially writing the review I have replaced the reel with real tripwire I aquired from a surplus store - I believe it is old vietnam era claymore wire. - In OD it is impossible to see , cheap and durable.

M-12TR
TRIPWIRE MINE
If you’ve had the pleasure (or misfortune) of seeing Major Paintballs “M-80TR Exploding Landmine” in action then you will have more appreciation for the New M-12TR Tripwire mine. If this is your first introduction to our new “Explosion Simulator” product line then please take a moment to review the following: The M-80TR Landmine and all new M-12TR use a new Patent Pending technology which generates a non pyrotechnic explosion by rupturing a replaceable “Explosion Tube” with the pressure from a 12g Co2 cartridge. Liquid “Marking Paint” or “Smoke Simulation Powder” is expelled from the mine along with a “VERY LOUD” report! The new M-12TR is a completely sealed, tripwire actuated mine meaning it has virtually limitless mounting possibilities. Both the M-80TR and M-12TR are completely reusable and very efficient to operate! At the risk of sounding cheesy, you do get “The Most Bang for Your Buck” of any mine out there. The field/scenario applications for these two Explosion Simulators are endless. Mine Fields, Booby Trapped objectives, Engineers, Demolition personnel, or just pure excitement from the unknown can add a fresh new shot of adrenaline to your field.
