Description:

New SRC XM8 carbine variant. 2x 470 round hicaps, built in scope, green and gray available. Mostly plastic construction, but still solid as a rock. Hicaps have fake bullets and feed well, performance is good, very comfortable to hold and use.

The SRC XM8 generated a load of excitement around its release because 1) it was the first XM8 yet to have a sight built in, 2) it's so darn sexy 3) this is the first full AEG XM8 to come out. As soon as i saw the pictures in late 2006 i knew i had to have one, and this morning that goal was achieved.
EDIT: The above picture led a lot of people to believe there were severe seamlines along this gun. The gun is in my hands right now, and this is mostly false. There are very slight seams, but nothing serious at all.
I got the XM8 from evike in gray for a scant $230, which is a mighty fine price. My reason for ordering was that i had some mini batteries and G36 mags left from my CA36E, and i needed a good CQB gun. The XM8 fits this bill perfectly. The XM8 comes in a standard box with 2 hicaps, but get this-they have fake bullets in them! How cool is that? They each hold 470 rounds and seem to feed pretty well. Upon picking up the gun you notice that it is a solid piece of kit, and the weight is just right IMO. Even though the gun is all plastic (just like the real one), it weighs around 7 pounds. I may be mistaken, but i think it is the same plastic as the marui G36C. Don't quote me on that though, i'm not completely sure. The gun is very comfortable to hold, everything seems to fit perfectly. I rather like the stock on this gun since the increments are small that it adjust in so you can really fit it well to your body. The stock clicks into place rather smoothly once you get used to adjusting it. The body is made out of a good plastic; i have no concerns about this gun breaking if i drop it on the ground or anything.
Enough about the general aeshetics, what about the scope? The scope is an aluminum one that is adjustable up to 3x magnification. There are also iron sight if you dont want to use the scope. Here's the deal though; this scope is around RDS length and is fairly far from where your head would go, and as a result eye relief is horrible. You have to have your eye pushed flat up against the scope to use it. Once you get used to it though, it is a pretty good aiming device. Congrats to SRC for doing the first sight on an AEG XM8 right.
I charged up a 8.4v 1200mah battery and put it in the foregrip, which is pretty easy to do compared to changing the battery on a CA36 *shudders*. Once you have everything connected and all set up, pull back the charging handle to reveal the hopup adjustment. Once you have all that set, pop in a hicap and get ready to shoot! Using .23s i was getting deadly tight groupings at 50 feet, and at 100 they were still pretty good. The gun's max range is around 160 feet, you can effectively hit someone until 150 or so. Really, i was pretty impressed because accuracy was much better than i was thinking it may have been. The gun shoots a little bit lower in FPS than a 340 FPS SG1, i guess around 320. ROF is average.
The internals seem to be improved over SRC's last run, after 2500 rounds or so i have had no misfires, jams, or any problems of any sort with the gun. I will update later after more rounds have been put through. I am rather wary of this, since the gun looks like it'll be a real bugger to take apart. I haven't tried yet, but hopefully the body sections break apart like the real one (which means all the other XM8 variants may exist in the future).
So, would i reccomend the gun? By all means, yes. It's very inexpensive, and performance was more than what you pay for. Once you get used to using the scope the gun has potential for some sniping capabilities if you stuck a tightbore in there. I'm sure this will do great in either CQB or woodland, or pretty much anything. Their internals seem to be better, but if you are still a little suspicious i'm not pointing any fingers (i was a bit too). If it appeals to you, go for it.
EDIT1: Put up a manufacturer picture. That oughta make you want one on its own. I did some more testing today, and after 5000 rounds it's still running strong. I did a field run (set up cans in certain places around the goldfcrouse in my backyard and my house, see how fast i can put 3 bbs in each with certain obstacles like changing mags) and the gun performed perfectly. I could hit cans at 60 feet away reliably. The design of this gun is nothing short of genius; acquiring targets seems to just flow perfectly. Imagine the pointability of the FAMAS, the easy-to-use sights of an AK, the easy mag system of the G36, and the comfort of the P99 all melted into 1 rifle. I can clearly see why the US army had this in postition to replace armalites.
I found that CA, STAR, and MAG magazines all perform well in this gun making it truly compatible. I also found that this gun is remarkably similar to shoting a G36K, just a little more rounded and comfortable to hold. I looked around and, as of now, there are no upgrades for any XM8 that i can find. This is mostly because the PCAP system doesnt exist in airsoft yet. One of these days i might weld a handle onto a mad bull XM203 and try to make a custom XM302 for this gun, which would look just plain amazing. I'll get it to a skirmish sometime, then tell about how it did. The metal hopup is great, i never had to adjust it at all today. I switched to an 8.4v battery also, since i'm still a bit wary about the internals of an SRC. So far this is, by far, the most physically and aesthetically pleasing gun i hav yet to handle.
EDIT again: I guess the aesthetics of this gun are purely an opinion thing. I'm 5'9" and a bit on the large side, and this gun is amazing to hold. On the other hand, a 6'3" small build friend of mine claims it to be the most uncomfortable, awkward thing he's ever held. I'd reccomend holding at least a BE before getting this.
EDIT: SKIRMISH RESULTS
Well, i took the ol' XM8 out to a skirmish today at a friend's cabin. There were about 15 people there and every single one had the reaction of "holy ****, check that thing out." This gun WILL turn heads at games, I guarantee it. The game was woodland, and the XM8 did fantastically in it. You can really point it around and aim quick like CQB, yet it is big and hefty enough to feel like a woodland gun. I consider it a good compromise between the 2. I got a few kills with it, not quite as many as i would with my SG1 because i wasn't support/sniper gunning, but the gun did very well. I found the scope to be rather annoying because of the eye relief, i ended up using the flip-up sights often. If you aren't in a fast paced game you'll be fine, but if you have to aim quick and take cover, this scope is quite difficult to zero in with. I noticed the stock to be very slightly wobbly, but maybe it's just me. Reloading is smoother than a CA36E, the magazines actually come out without having the jerk the hell out of it to get the darn thing out of the magwell. Overall i was impresed with the gun's performance in a game and will gladly continue to use it (plus it's so cool to know that no one else for a long ways has one).
...and remember, if you liked my review and didn't leave a rep point it's technically sanctioned robbery :P ...
another EDIT: I would not hesitate to buy another one of these, which i just might do for project purposes. As of now the gun has about 25K rounds through it. I opened up the gearbox today and checked everything out (as well as to lube it), and the gears had no wear at all! Everything was in perfect condition.! Aside from a few scratches and things of the sort which are just regular marks (same type of damage as the line between selector indents that always shows up). The hopup is still in excellent condition, and everything is absolutely great!
So...what's next for my newfound love for the XM8? I plan to buy another, as well as an AGM sharpshooter one and a G36 extended barrel. I will also get a boxmag, and make myself a good ol' LMG XM8! Some high speed gears and a 9.6v will also be in order. If that goes well, I will buy a 3rd one to make into the compact carbine variant, although that will probably require a fair amount more work. This gun is amazing, buy one if at all possible.------------------------------ QUOTE (Donut on AIM) Donut: i wouldn't say I'm totally gay Donut: I still like girls...
