Cons: A bit big for some, single shot, not very upgradable.

Tokyo Marui Benelli M3 Super 90 Full-stock Shotgun Review.

Initial Impressions

Upon opening the box and picking up my new weapon I was… surprised, let’s say, and the size of the thing. I already knew this was going to be a step up from the p90 I had become accustomed to, but seriously, it’s a very big gun indeed. Nevertheless, it brought the silly grin to my face that only a large gun can Wink.

However, although heavy, the fact that it’s a springer (and therefore doesn’t have nearly the same amount of weighty internal components as an AEG) coupled with the plastic receiver and stock etc. means that although large, the weight is a little lower than your average AEG. That said, it isn’t too light and the balance of the gun is perfect, in my most humble of opinions.

The Externals

The pistol grip is coated in a composite rubber and feels extremely comfortable to hold. It is also nice and chunky so you can a really nice solid grip on it. The stock, which is made of plastic, has a nice rubber end and feels very nice to shoulder. It also means that you don’t end up with a sore shoulder after a few shots. There are two sling loops – one in each side of the stock.

As I’ve mentioned, the receiver of the gun is plastic but, as with most Marui replicas, the plastic is of very high quality and is very durable. On the right side of the receiver, there is a faux bolt which serves no purpose but to look pretty. This is made of metal.

The outer barrel and action bar are both metal as you would expect and add a much needed bit of weight to the front end. The pumping handle is plastic and fits you hand perfectly. Prior to buying the gun, when I found this out I was somewhat disappointed that they weren’t covered in rubber but it really isn’t that big a deal, especially as in the box is a strip of rubber which you can put on the handle to increase grip, which was a great plus as this gun, at first, requires a fair bit of effort to pump. Just in front of the handle there is a metal sling loop which, coupled with the rear loops, means the whole system is ambidextrous.

The sighting system is one of my favourite things about the gun. They are just standard open sights – Brilliant! None of the peephole nonsense of the SPAS shotgun or the multiple apertures on the M16 range of guns, no, just simple accurate sights.

In terms of trades there aren’t huge amounts but there are a few on the gun:

Left side of receiver:
• MOD. M3 SUPER 90
• *** ORE iruma TM

Right side of receiver:
• TOKYO MARUI CO. LTD.- MADE IN JAPAN
• M200898

Outer Barrel:
• 12 Ga. 3” – FOR 2 ¾” or 3” SHELLS
• READ OWNERS MANUAL BEFORE USING GUN
• C289810

On the bolt:
• 3 BARRELS 3 CYLINDERS SYSTEM

Using the shotgun

The thing I love about owning a shotgun is that all you need to shoot it are the gun and some BBs. No waiting anxiously for batteries to charge and no need to spend gratuitous amounts money on gas. But I digress.
First and foremost is loading the magazine which Marui have, oh so cleverly, designed to look and feel like a shotgun shell. Each shell holds 30 rounds which equates to 10 shots for those of you who aren’t maths scholars. These shells load like a standard lo-cap, just plunge the BBs in until you cannae plunge ne more! I would always suggest loading the BBs to the top so you can count your shots to avoid dry-fires which are never a good idea with any gun, but especially not these TM shotguns.

To load the ‘shell’ into the gun, you first push a switch like thing on the right hand side of the trigger guard which should lead to the metal shell door flinging open. Then, you just push the shell in first by pushing the front end in and then the back end until it clicks and locks into position. Complicated, huh?

If and when you need to use the safety, there is a button just behind the trigger. You push from left to right for safe and right to left to fire.

Pumping the shotgun is hard at first, but it gets easier as you get used to it and the system beds in a bit, you will soon learn your own effective technique as well.

Then comes the fun bit.

Upon firing…

There is no real way to given any definitive tests on this subject seeing as I don’t have a chrono and it’s a three shot shotgun. But I can tell you that this gun really is a joy to fire and is by far the most fun I have ever had with an airsoft gun of any sort (I’m comparing that to my friends TM hardkick desert eagle as well).

The range of the gun is about that of a stock AEG, perhaps a little lower and I’d say that the claimed 270fps sounds about right.

The hop up is fixed for all three barrels and I would assume it is set for .25s by Marui. I, however, use 0.2s for their increased range, velocity and sometimes spread.

There isn’t really too much more that I can say about firing except that the iron sights are extremely accurate and this gun is a lot of fun for target shooting (Beer cans etc) as shotguns were originally designed to do (flying targets mainly).

In Conclusion

The Benelli M3 is my favourite airsoft gun ever. It is extremely intimindating, fun to handle and an absolute joy to shoot. It was probably the best £140 I have ever spent on airsoft and since I have not looked back. To anyone who is interested in buying one, just do it, you will NOT regret it.

Many thanks for reading.

- Gareth.

Review of the TM M3 Super 90 full-stock pump-action shotgun

Real-Steel Information
from world.guns.ru

Type: selective pump-action or semi-auto recoil inertia operated
Gauge: 12
Length: 1040-1200mm
Barrel length: 500-660 mm.
Weight 3.2-3.5 kg
Capacity: 8 rounds in underbarrel tube magazine

The Benelli M3 is an updated version of the Benelli M1 shotgun. M3 uses same inertia recoil semi-automatic system as earlier Benelli M1, but with addition of the another Benelli patented feature, which allows to the shooter to lock the semi-automatic action and switch to the manually operated pump-action mode and back in the matter of seconds. The action type switch is located at the forward end of the forearm, and is formed as an annular knurled ring. Rotation of this ring either engages the action rods of the pump system and locks the semi-automatic recoil system, or disengages the action bars, locks the forearm and allows the inertia recoil system to operate the action automatically. This greatly improves the versatility of the shotgun, allowing it to fire low-powered ammunition (mostly of special purpose, such as less-lethal rubber or tear-gas projectiles) in the manually operated pump action mode, and to fire full power combat loads with slugs or buckshot in rapid semi-automatic mode. Underbarrel tubular magazine usually holds 8 rounds for police or military versions, or less in some civilian models.

M3 Super 90 is available with various barrel lengths and stock options, with fixed butt and semi-pistol or pistol grips, or with top-folding butts and pistol grips. Sight options include shotgun-type open sights, rifle type open sights, ghost ring (diopter) sights and various mounts for red dot or low magnification telescope sights and tactical flashlights and laser pointers.

M3 is a high quality, very versatile shotgun, and is very popular as a police weapon, and as a civilian weapon for self defense and sporting purposes (IPSC shotgun).

Airsoft version

TM's version of the Benelli M3 is pump-action only, unlike it's real-steel brethren. It fires 3 bbs at a time from 3 separate inner barrels, and is fed from a replica 12 gauge shell. This shotgun shell acts as a magazine, holding 30 bbs for 10 shots per shell.

TM shotguns are some of the most controversial replicas on the market, shrouded by a cloud of disinformation and rumors. Often called a "triple spring pistol in a glorified case," few have laid down the money to buy such a supposedly iffy product. The simple truth is that, when operated properly, TM shotguns are just as durable and effective as TM's AEG line.

External parts

Allow me to digress for a moment; don't worry, I'll go back and qualify my statement Smile. The TM M3 is primarily a very sturdy plastic, sans the following parts:

Trigger
Push-button safety
Shell release
Outer barrel
Shell tube
Sling points
Front and rear sights
Ejection port cover
Shell door

The trigger is good, the safety is positive, the sights are very easy to use (rifle-type, a.k.a. post-and-notch), and the barrel/shell tube are solid. The front sling point can be rotated and locked into the left, right, and bottom positions. The rear sling loop is a bit narrow, which can make attaching slings with wide webbing difficult. The handle on the ejection port cover comes loose eventually, but it's only cosmetic and can be fixed with epoxy. The shell door is metal as well, although I had mine removed for faster reloading (it doesn't affect the security of the shell in the gun).

Internal parts

The M3, internally, is a nightmare to upgrade or repair. Fortunately, if operated properly, there is no need to do so.

Operating procedures

1. Load fake shell with 30 bbs: It acts as a magazine, so you get 10 3-round volleys out of each shell. They are fully reloadable.

2. Release the shell door with the shell door release (located to the rear right of the trigger guard)

3. Insert the shell into the shell bay

4. FULLY rack the pump

5. Aim, pull the trigger, repeat steps 4-5 as necessary.

Let me give you some tips on how to properly rack the M3:

1. Rack it hard. It's not as tough as people make it out to be.
2. Rack it fully. That's the easiest way to prevent damage to your shotty.
3. Rack it fast. That's just a good idea, especially in combat.
4. Don't slam fire. For those of you who are unaware, slam firing is holding down the trigger while repeatedly racking the pump. That's a great way to incompletely cycle your pump and damage your gun.
5. Don't use AEG tactics. That one is easier learned than told, but it's a helluva lot of fun to learn. Very Happy

In the event of an incomplete pump cycle or jam:

1. DO NOT pull the trigger or attempt to cycle the pump again.
2. Remove the shell from the gun.
3. Tilt the gun upwards, then slowly pull the pump back an inch or two. Several bbs should fall out of the feed tube. Return the pump to the forward position.
4. If you CANNOT pull the pump back, pull the trigger and observe the muzzle. If there is no muzzle discharge, perform step #3.

Performance

FPS: 265 fps w/0.25g (gun was about 6 months old at this point)

0.20g: 100 ft max range, 18'' spread at max range

0.23g: 95 ft max range, 15'' spread at max range

0.25g: 90 ft max range, 8-12'' spread at max range (my preferred ammo)

Modifications/customizations

Various stocks are available (I have the G&P M3 retractable stock on mine), as well as a few internal upgrades. I don't recommend the internal upgrades, since I have doubts about the long-term durability of the stock internals with upgraded springs and the like. Mosquito Molds makes a rail unit that replaces the stock pump foregrip. Many screw-on fiber optic shotgun sights and heat shields are compatible as well.

Why should you buy this gun?

To be honest, TM shotguns aren't for everyone. Not as primaries, anyway. With a low ROF and stock AEG range/fps, the statistics aren't spectacular. The spread from the 3 bb volley is a bit of a "silver lining," until you realize that an AEG can easily achieve similar effects with a triple-tap (semi) or 3-round burst (auto).

With inferior firepower for about the same price as one of the cheaper TM AEGs, one must wonder... why would you ever buy one of these things?!?

1. Lightweight weapon and loadout: The gun itself is already light; combine that with no need for batteries or bulky magazines, and you have a loadout that is the definition of "high speed, low drag."

2. Low running cost: All you need to get the gun working are bbs. No batteries or gas required.

3. "Cool" factor: Shotguns are awesome, and racking that pump before blasting a tango just feels good.

4. Fun: Who doesn't want to run around, fast assaulting with a shotgun? Well, maybe not all the time, but it makes for a great change of pace.

5. Tactical improvement through firepower deprivation: Every shot counts, and you're forced to play that way. Teamwork, stealthy movement, and cover selection are also improved. Read "Firepower is Nothing" for more.

Pros/Cons

+ lightweight
+ cheap
+ low running cost
+ makes airsoft a thinking game
+ cool
+ fun
+ fun
+ fun
+ customizations are abundant, with a bit of imagination
- upgradability
- range
- ROF
- power
- n00b friendly (n00bs can break anything)
- practicality

Conclusion

Buy one. Hell, buy two. They're great fun to play with, and are pretty damn addictive. I really regret selling mine, but will probably be buying another one soon. I'm fairly certain I'll always be a shotgunner at heart.
