ok the g&g l85a2 has arrived and ive spent a few days playing around with it and a whole day skirmishing (with intense firefights). now its time to review the gun.
First up as with the previous g&g l85 the externals are incredible, i mean really really good. ive not seen a better finish and the fact it is quality steel really shows. the paint finish is a little less matt than an armalite but it looks great. The body has very nice detail with everything you would expect to find on an L85. The furniture is solid feeling and a nice shade of green that seems true to the original and the rubberized butt is a very high quality rubber. It has alot of weight to it mostly toward the rear, this balances off a little more when the battery is fitted. By the way i found the battery very straigtforward to fit and by no means as difficult as many people have made out in other reviews, about as difficult as fitting a crane stock battery.
the bolt lever feels a little light but this is to keep the strain on the blowback to a minimum.
The is no cocking sound when you pull the lever back , but the blowback sound more than makes up for this.
By the way-- the issues with the blowback in the A1 seem to have been resolved, the A2 has the top of the gearbox closed as standard so there is no chance of the blowback hook killing the gears. ive fired close to 5000 rounds with the blowback enabled with no problem whatsoever, not a single issue has arisen with it and its a great way to impress fellow skirmishers.
when you fire this gun there is a little kick, not really recoil because its caused by the charging handle hitting the reciever as the 'bolt' comes forward. None the less it 'feels' more like getting a reaction from the gun and after passing it around the guys at the skirmish site, we all agreed that this was something unique.
Also the spring is pre-cocked, that means that the spring isnt wound each time you pull the trigger , instead its wound after each shot. the gun is so very responive due to this, you really have to fire it you see.
The only problem with this system is when you switch from automatic to semi , the gun will misfire the first round. Not a real problem if you know about it and are prepared. I have also found that the gun will sometimes fire in automatic whilst its set to semi. again i dont see this as a problem as it is very easy to squeeze of single rounds at will.
I will comment on the necessity to use the safty lever as there is no 'off' position on the selector a la armalites or HK's. Also the rather arkward position of the L85's selector as opposed to an m4's, but thats the way the real steel works so its just something to get used to.
Now alot of people with the l85a1 have disabled the blowback, which as i understand it is nesacerry with that model. I can confidently say that there is no need to do this with the A2 as its solid as a rock. The Nice punchy sound it gives the gun is the best ive heard in airsoft.
It really does feel a beast to fire.
The front and rear sights are very solid and have no play in them , they are difficult to adjust however due to notches on thier adjustment wheels designed to stop them moving once calibrated. i found these to be more of a pain than help. also if your used to armalite sights then the l85's rear appature will feel a little big even on the small setting. Once set the gun gives consistent tight groupings at mid to long range.
The hop up is fairly average, could be improved and i will probably replace this when i get the chance, setting it is a little testing.
when skirmishing the gun becomes incredibly versatile. accurate and powerfull yet compact and manuverable. comfortable from both standing and prone positions ( i must admit i didnt think it would be as good whilst prone as it is.) Easy to reload quickly and whilst heavy, the weight is balanced in such a way as to not weigh your arms down. i used it for the whole day WITHOUT A SLING with no tiring of the arms.
Overall i would recomend this gun because it is an accurate replica of my countries fighting weapon beautifully realised with some truly nice features and good performance out of the box (the FPS is above forum limits and ROF beats most m16/g36's on th field) the only problems i can find are the semi misfireing the first round, the average hop-up ,and occasionally the gun firing in auto when on semi.it really is hard to explain the combined feel of the positive featues i mentioned above, if you like the L85 then you will love this gun and it will love you back.
I bought mine from WGCShop for 250great british pounds plus about 50quid p&p (add about 20 quid customs charges.) I only got it from there because it wasnt available in britain yet and a friend was putting in an order to WGC anyway.
if your thinking of getting one now i would recoment Airsoft Warehouse in bristol as they have the greatest knowlege of this series of airsoft guns. The average UK price is 325gbp
which is about what the total of ordering from overseas came to anyway.
edit:-
ok ive owned the gun for around 6-7 months now and have had a few problems.
first off the pin holding the mag release catch is poorly designed and falls off taking the mag catch with it.
i made a new pin and put it in , no biggie.
the trigger contacts have burned out once and seized at the mechanism a few times.
as a precaution against piston stripping i modded the gun to take a 16 tooth piston as recomended by just about every l85 owner, having done this the gun now only fires automatic. i have modded the trigger contacts to accommodate this on both fire settings.
more recently the spur gear has stripped where it meets the sector gear.
to be fair the GB problems are more to do with the mods but without such changes i fear the piston would have stripped.------------------------------ feelin' fine

Box:
The box is a highly decorated cardboard box featuring the British flag and- the G&G L85A2! Upon opening the box, you're greeted with the sight of the gun, the sights, a cleaning rod, and a manual.
Putting It Together:
The sights come detached from the gun. The rear sight is in a carrying handle, and the front sight is a post. You unscrew the screws and slide them on their respective rails. Take care not to push too hard- you could break the sights. (they are sort of in a M16 type arrangement)
First Impressions:
After you've attached the sights, you pick the gun up and the first thing you notice is the weight- the thing is nearly 9 pounds unloaded. Everything is well positioned. The gun is right handed only, so keep that in mind. Shouldering the gun, the sights are located right in front of your eyes. The front grip, pistol grip, and cheek rest are all made out of high quality polymer. The rest is ALL METAL. The gun is beautifully made. Everything looks rather real. You have a safety on top of the trigger guard, but the fire selector is at the rear. Weird, eh? The L85A2 also features a spring release: instant un- jamming. The gun is about the size of a M4 with the stock collapsed.
Battery and Magazine:
The magazine is the standard M16 type. However, the included mag is modeled after a real steel 40 rd type. The L85A2 will take most M16 style mags. I've tried Echo 1, G&G, and Airsoft Elite. They all work. The battery you'll need is a custom large type. Two rows of 3 cells and another cell off on a wire. Note: This gun will only take 8.4v batteries stock due to its unusual gearbox.
Performance:
After charging up the battery, I took the gun outside. Safety off, look down the sights, pull the trigger and a whine but no shot. This isn't a lock up, its just the pre-cocking mechanism. Pull the trigger again and a BB whizzes downrange. The sights, as I mentioned before, are similar to a M16 setup. The gun is astoundingly accurate. At 80 feet, I was able to nail a coke can with a single shot. The gun has a tightbore barrel standard, so that is a definite plus. The gun shoots 380-390 FPS. (chronoed) If you notice that the gun jams occasionally on semi, this is because it has an unusual 18 tooth piston. No worry, just hit the spring release in the magwell. (press HARD, it takes some effort) The hop-up is of average quality, but it works.
Other Stuff:
Do realize that the STAR L85A2 accessories are NOT compatible with the G&G. The STAR uses a 19mm rail, while G&G uses a 20mm. That means the STAR SUSAT will not fit, but other sights with 20mm interfaces will. I have currently mounted a G&P 4x32 ACOG on my L85A2. (btw, its a great scope)
Skirmishing:
I haven't taken this beast to a skirmish yet. Tomorrow's the first one.

I purchased this weapon about amonth ago from airsoft GI. So far I have taken this gun to one skimish and it worked great, it is very comftorble to hold. It is accurate and the fact that it takes m4/m16 mags is a plus. The gun is exteremly easy to field strip and can be done in a matter of seconds. I also had purchased the star SUSAT for the gun which makes the gun look 10 times better.
NOTE:The STAR SUSAT can fit on the gun. All you have to do is take a metal file and file down the rail until it fits on. It is definatly worth the work.------------------------------ Sig limit 400 x 100 maximum
