I am not a stranger to assault vests. I have three and have owned four. The other vests I have (had) were more general purpose and as such had larger and more varied pouches. Some required a little tweaking to get just right. Others required an overhaul just to make really functional.
The Tac Vest 1A Rifle is a specialized vest in that it is made to carry rifle mags and little else. That's not a complaint. Simply an observation. Sure the 1A Rifle Vest has a hydration pouch, a radio pouch, two map pouches and a few two general purpose pouches on the front and two more general purpose pouches on the back but what this thing is all about... Is rifle mag pouches.
Including the two general purpose pouches on back that can also carry mags this thing can carry 16 AR mags. From M4 mags to AK mags. The mag pouches are enlarged and can take two AR mags each with little effort. Each mag pouch can take 3 mp5 mags for a total of 24 mags!
The two general purpose pouches on the back are not accessible without the help of a buddy or taking the vest off. All other mag pouches are easily accessible and any mags in them are brought to the ready in quick fashion. Each mag pouch has an elastic draw string allowing you to cinch the pouch tight on different sized mags for a good fit over a wide range of mag types.
A couple small gripes I have with the vest. First is the placement of the internal map pockets. They are behind the fast-tec buckles on the lower chest and requires going in through the arm hole or between the buckles on front to access it. I have cheaper vests that solve this problem by putting the fast-tec buckles behind the map pocket. This would allow for easier access to the pockets. Another simple solution would have been to turn the map pouch 90 degrees so it opens towards the vest's center opening instead of on the top. With a little practice they are accessible without taking the vest off or undoing any buckles. Second gripe. No pen pocket. Nuff said.
I am a tall and fairly thin guy, at 6' 4" and 190lbs. But this vest makes me feel petite. I have all of the adjustment straps at close to the minimum adjustment. I think this vest would be an excellent addition to any big and tall operator with emphasis on big. The vest closes with three fast-tec buckles up front. The bottom of the vest has tie downs to allow attachment points to a belt. The vest also has a robust drag handle that I think would not come off if tugged on. More then acceptable for Airsoft.
The vest is made from heavy-duty breathable nylon mesh and is quite comfortable. The vest does have an overall shine to it that I am going to try and get rid of with a light dusting of a flat olive-drab spray paint, a trick I learned in a book about Navy SEALs. The vest has a small "D" ring to attach lanyards to over each chest pouch. A simple little idiot proof addition that will keep your GPS or radio from going MIA.
At $150 this is the most expensive vest (so far) in my vest collection but considering how many mags it holds and how comfortably it keeps them I don't have too many complaints about the vest.
