Pros: Very Strong build.
Cons: Needs Star rail for SUSAT. Not all magazines fit or feed well

Ok howsit all going. This is my first ever Airsoft AEG review so please bear with me, also fotos are on the way. Ok i have seen other reviews and i am not going to bother about postman pat and the box it came in. I have been wanting to play arsoft for about 3 months now and yesterday was my first time. I was attracted to the reality of the weapons look and it brought memories of my time of Army Service in England.
Anyway i am stuck in Switzerland (working)where the airsoft is new and so am i to it. The teams here are good and real great team players.
Anyway
THE R85 A1
I wanted this AEG because it brought back memories. I can say now the AEG is 85% near to the real deal.
It is very sturdy and there are no creaks or wobbels.
I will start with the problems first get that out the way.
(this review is possible thanks to the guys at foxforce Switzerland who have many guns and other crazy stuff plus a Lady sniper rocking)

1.When i bought this AEG the Front sight did move a bit but by pushing it back an inch and tightening it sat great.

2.My mate told me the rubber of th hop up unit was not so good quality so he changed that for me.

3.Ha ha ha from what i have seen on other AEGs this R85 a1 has a crazy battery changing system but after a few times you will get used tom it, not such a big deal.

4.There is a SUSAT sight for this AEG but you will have to muck your sight rail up and then you will not be able to use the Iron sights again which is not advisable because the iron sight was quite handy.Or you can just go and order The susat and the Rail from Star Company so this is not realy a big problem.

5.Pimping your R85 is not realy a strong point here like an M4

Anyway these are small problems.

The GOOD BITS
Well i have played one day airsoft now for the very first time. It was rocking. The R85 withstood every thing possible in a combat situation. Ok i seem to hear lots of problems from airsoft players about there weapons and eqquipment ok eqquipment like PLCE webbing systems or assault vests will get destroyed. But the weapon is not an excuse i have absolutly no problems with this R85 A1 for its price its Amazing LOOK AFTER YOU WEAPON AND IT WILL LOK AFTER YOU. It
THE R85 is built like a rock its metal with all the bits in the right places. Its not as heavy as the real deal but for me thats a plus point. It is also a blowback from which i hear not many Airsoft weapons have this function. With a full battery to half full battery its fun to see the working parts fly back and forwards and a high speed when on full auto. On single it is kinda weaker but not so much of a problem i mean your shooting some one else not looking at the working parts. You can also deactivate the blowback by pulling the working parts to the rear and locking them with the bolt lock. It also has quite QUITE a realistic dust cover which made me smile because of the times they drilled into our heads at ITC to close it.
This weapon has a nice barrel to its long like an M16s but its is of course a bullpup which is very usefull. It also great for those fast mag changes and comfotable firing positions. Also great for fighting in The woods and open sapces and then having to adapt quickly to fighting in built up areas great for CQB. Plus its nicer than the original L85 A1 i had not one gas stoppage ha ha ha.
So the build is great and feels like the real deal is in your controll.
Apparently not very important but some things can be changed internaly but as far as it goes every thing is working fine and shooting fine.
This AEG came in a package with A battary and charger that is shipped with it (even after some things i read they say its bad but for me and the other players this battry was great just the charger was a bit slow) and a sling which sorry to say is rubbish, a cleaning rod and a high cap mag oh and a SCREW DRIVER Smile that was handy, and a manual.

When i know more and have any probs i will update hopfully i will know how to review too ha ha.

CONCLUSION:
I have seen the Star and the G&G models at the shop and fired them too. The G&G has an internal problem because of the blow back this is not possible on the Army model because the gear box is closed. Apart form that the G&G stands under the Army my opinion beeing the Army is better also in price.
The Star is great has a high rate of fire but some things on the stars body work did not do it for me good thing about the star are its abilty to add stuff onto it like the SUSAT and Grenade Launcher.
For me the ARMY R85 A1 blew them all away why because it was the most realistic out of all of them and is also a fun airsoft weapon with a great gearbox and wiring system which by the way is stronger than the star and Marui wiring.
Anyway hope this has helped some L85 fans or if you want SA80 fans.
THis is well worth the money and the fun.

FEED BACK as of 6 April 2008:

Oh no the gun did not work. Everything seemed to work. The gears where working and everything else. But no shot. The Cylinder catch leaver (the one that gets pulled back and forth by the gears) broke but it is easy to replace apart from that everything thing seems to be in order.
Cya round

Pros: solid build, just what i was looking for for my loadout, its british. nuff said.
Cons: my handguard is loose a bit. had some problems with internals.

this weapon for me is probably the one im most pleased with.

1) it was dead cheap, always a good thing

2)solid build to it although my handguard has come loose a bit, probably just a screw i need to tighten.

3)blow back is pretty awsome.

things i didnt like

switching from fully automatic fire to semi automatic can be pretty finiky. occasionaly u will have to go back to full auto, fire a burst and then get back on semi. also, when firing on semi, if u try and fire really rapidly it will lock up, and you need to fire a burst of automatic to get it working again.

really, thats all i dont like about the gun, but if u just take semi auto shots nice and slow its nor a problem. it only occurs to me if i try and get more than 1 shot a second. and if u want more than 1 round a second, go full auto anyway :P

the blowback was a nice feature, and i liked how much the rifle would judder in my shoulder on full auto, however, after a while it lost its novelty, but i would have left it enabled if it didnt drain my battery so much.

on batteries, as said in the review above, it is a bit tricky to install the battery, but if u get a good battery u can leave it in the gun and charge it by opening the hatch on top of the hand guard.

the iron sights were good, however i prefer the look of the susat, but i was amazed to find that it has a 20mm rail. not wanting to file down the rail to make a susat fit (atleast not while my warranty is still valid) i now use an acog. close enough for me.

over all an awsome weapon, however i will say this: replace the hopup rubber. i spent ages wondering why my shots were dipping so early. i installed a standard tm rubber and now they go for miles.

the gearbox does tend to put some grease in the barrel after a substantial amount of firing, so after each use i clean the barrel out thoroughly to keep the hopup nice and clean and functioning properly.

i did have some teething problems when i first got it, but airsoftscotland (now airsoft world) arranged for the rifle to be picked up and fixed and redelivered free of charge on both occasions. thanks very much guys Smile

if you want to go for an sa80, but dont want to spend oodles of money for one, or if u simply want a good weapon system to keep you going, i would definitly recommend this weapon.
