HFC Glock 17 Review

Side Note – This is a Gwag review, its long, lots of writing, and some nice pictures to go along with it all, I like to type, so ill try to explain everything in great detail. It usually takes me close to a month to write a review, and that doesn’t include updating it lafter 6 months and a year to include more info on wear and tear. I don’t write the review all at once, I do things, test things, and ill write in various sections of the review over the course of however many weeks it takes me.

Saturday, April 28th, 2007. I attended BattleSim’s event “Total War, Phase IV.” This event which spawned Friday night till Saturday morning ended with a big raffle, as this was the last event in the Total War series. One of our sponsors, , had amongst their items to be given away a Glock with metal slide, that was all I knew at the time. I was the lucky person who won this item, and as I needed a new GBB, I took it with pleasure. After bringing it home, I decided it was time to finally write another review, as its been a while.
One more thing
Before this I had not liked Glocks I was a 1911 fan, still am and think that they are one of the best looking pistols out there, mostly for their simplicity and design, point being, I never really liked Glocks, only have a slight like for the G19. But after getting a G17 myself, and using it, I am starting to like the feel and look of them. Nothing like a free gun to make you like something you hated eh?
Inspection
The Glock came in a plastic gun case, with included inside: Glock, Silver metal slide with outer barrel, magazine loader, magazine, and a speed loader. Now you may be wondering, wow all that with one gun? Yes. The gun that appears to be a rebranded HFC Glock 17 and was distributed by G2. What is G2 you ask? http://www.usg2.com/product.asp?cid=116 so there you have it. I’m guessing they basically take the HFC Glock 17, puts it in their G2 case, along with another metal slide and speed loader for that added “hey I get all this for one low price” type of deal. In addition, Manual, accessories guide, as well as a warranty card. The 30-day warranty is something most retailers don’t offer, and it’s nice that a rebrander offers one. The fact that the HFC manuals are included with the gun further makes me think this. Well I got it for free, so I don’t really care. I have swapped the black metal slide for the silver metal slide, because I like the look better, so you’ll be seeing that in the picture throughout this review. Here’s a picture below of all I got with it. And with that, lets begin the next part of the review where we will get more in depth.

First Looks
Getting home from the event I ran to my room…and fell asleep, its tough after being up for 30 hours straight. Anyway, upon my revival, I finally had a chance to look at my new gun. The first thing you notice is the weight. I was used to my WE Hicappa before, with the beastly heavy thing, so it was good to wield something a bit lighter. Its not to light, but has enough weight to make you know its there. Its got a good weight to it. The second thing you notice is how solid it is. I’ve used a KWA G19 before and that thing is solid as well. The HFC G17 with the metal slide is just the same, with almost no play to the slide. Moving on to the grip on the right side is the HFC logo I presume, with the golden box with spider and web on the inside. On the right side toward the bottom is the words “Completed in 2001.” On the top of the frame on the right side are the words “Read Menu Before Use” and below that “Made in Taiwan” I have a feeling they want me to read the MANUAL before use and not decide what I want for lunch before hand. There are no trades on the slide, black or silver, but I’d rather have no trades than some made up ones. It’s just smooth metal

Build
The gun is built pretty close to the real gun, with the body being plastic and the slide being metal. It’s a very solid gun, and as ill mention again later on, the slide is fit very well, more so than the KWA Glock 19. Here’s a rough list of the metal and plastic parts.
Metal:
Magazine
Slide
Slide catch
Rear site
Outer barrel
Inner barrel
Safety switch
Disassembly switch
Trigger mechanism
Other internals
Plastic:
Body
Magazine lip and base cover
Hop up assembly
Trigger
Recoil Spring
Magazine release
Front site
Other internal parts
Body
The body, like Glocks go, is plastic. Plastic, but very solid and durable. It’s textured on the sides and has a textured look on the front and back of the grip. The front of the grip is formed to your fingers, and has an indentation on the both sides where your thumb can rest. The front of the trigger guard is also textured. The plastic its made of defiantly does not have that brittle or cheap feeling to it you get with other guns, it feels very rugged, but you can see a visible seem line running around the slide, but that’s not a big issue in my book.
The safety:
Now, in the real world, Glocks have no safety, but on the HFC, on the bottom in the front where a serial number would be you get the following serial number: S A F T E Y. It’s actually a little metal slide the you can push backward and enable a safety. It still allows a bit of play with the trigger, but make you know that you can’t fire the gun without turning it off. As this is not very realistic with what real Glocks have, I don’t think ill use it, as it would also be very incontinent to use when drawing quickly. It’s really a hassle to turn it on or off, so it stays off on my gun.
<img src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb101/hfcglock17review/IMG_1363.jpg" border="0"/>
The Rail
Ooh, a rail, not very exciting eh? It’s on the underside of the plastic frame of the Glock in the front and can except laser, lights, etc for your convenience. So go, trick out your Glock, because you my friend have a rail, just don’t let me catch you with a vertical grip.
Slide
As I said before this gun package come with 2 slide, and 2 outer barrels. The stock black one, and the Silver one, of which I have installed, and prefer over the black one. Once thing I noticed after handling my gun and the KWA G19, which is probably one of the most rugged and abuse able guns out there, is that the HFC slide fits tighter, and there is practically no wobble, whereas on the KWA G19, the slide does have noticeable wobble if you move it with your hand, and shake the gun lightly. +1 for the HFC. The slide is pretty smooth, but I took to sanding down all contact point on the slide with 600gritt sandpaper, just to make it smoother

<img src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb101/hfcglock17review/IMG_1370.jpg" border="0"/>
Slide Stop
The slide stop is probably one of the few things I like better than other guns in that it’s a lot more accessible with your thumb than other guns like my former Hicappa, where its positioned more forward is harder to move with your thumb without changing your grip on the gun.
Sights
The sights on the gun are the simple front white dot with the 2 back white dots. I find that the front dot is a bit small, but it’s still easy enough to aim with. The front site is plastic, and attached by a screw assessable from the underside of the slide. The rear sight it metal, and is attached via a screw that also helps hold the gas chamber assembly together, and must be removed to take out.
<img src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb101/hfcglock17review/IMG_1373.jpg" border="0"/>
Power Options
As this gun has a metal slide, green gas would not be a problem, and I will continue to use it until I can get my hands on a propane adapter.
Magazine
With the magazine in the gun, its pretty balanced with your finger right under the trigger guard against the grip, without it in, the gun is a bit front heavy, as the magazine makes up a good portion of the guns weight. The magazine is practically all metal save a few things like the feed lip, plastic bb pushing thingy, as well as the plastic end of the magazine, which has OPEN written on it, slide the back and you have access to your gas valve for refilling. The magazine sits nicely inside the grip, and there is no wobble, but at the same time, it’s not too tight, and will drop out easily with the push of the magazine release.

Firing
Finally had a chance to get some Green Gas from the BattleSim Store, and after I got home I decided to test it. Further testing will come; this is just the first time. Sliding the base of the magazine backwards reveals the gas valve, filled it up with only about 3 seconds worth of gas and loaded the magazine with ICS .2-gram bb’s. The blowback is very crisp, but the shots tended to curve to the left, and this was with the hop up off. I’ll tinker around with the barrel and get back to this part of the review in a couple days.
UPDATE: I took apart the hop up assembly, and wrapped the end of the barrel in Teflon tape. The results are a bit different now in which I can hit a point almost every single time, but it’s not what I’m aiming at. The inner barrel seems to be tilted to the left for some reason, when it should be straight. Maybe some rubber washers or some kind of spacer will improve results more.
UPDATE: Took the barrel out again, this time I wrapped electrical tape around the barrel in hopes of it positioning the barrel more toward the center of the outer barrel. It looks more centered now. Put it all back together and went out to fire it on the first 70-degree sunny day we’ve had since I got the gun. Results are a lot better, the gun still has a slight, very slight curve to the left, but the accuracy left and right wise is a lot better. I am able to hit a man sized target at about 40 feet constantly, with a bit of fluctuation in the up and down of the bb. This is still with the hop up off; although having the Teflon tape on there may have messed with that. More trials will come from this and accuracy testing.
UPDATE: Seems that fix was wearing down a bit, I get consistent shots 70% of the time, and the other shots are sometimes off like a lost sheep. Installation of a rubber washer, and more permanent fix will be added when I get around to it. Until then, it’s good enough for a secondary weapon. But I would never use it in a TAPSS event.
Hop-Up
The hop up can be accessed by taking the slide off, and you will see it facing upward. I haven’t had to adjust it even the slightest bit after doing my mods, it’s shooting very straight as of now, so ill leave it where it is.
Takedown
So you want to take apart your Glock eh? Maybe something broke, maybe your cleaning it, or maybe you just like to know all about your gun. The first thing you must do is take out the mag. Without doing this important step, it will be impossible to continue. Hit that mag release and drop the mag. Now with both your fingers, push down on both sides of that little switch above the trigger. While doing this pull back on the slide, and then push it forward, you can’t just push it forward like you can on other guns, you must slide it backwards first. Now the slide will slide off, and you’re left with the slide assembly, and the lower gun body. Now I wont tell you how to dissemble the trigger assembly, because I will never mess with that part of a pistol unless there’s something broken. As for the slide, you can now pull out the recoil spring and guide. Its best to first take it out from where it connects to the barrel and hopup assembly, and then pull it out the rest of the way. Now you can pull the inner and outer barrel forward, and take out the inner barrel and hopup unit. Now if you want to go even further, you will have to take out the rear sight screw, located in the back of slide. Unscrew that. Note that you cannot take out the outer barrel without taking out the blowback chamber. To get out the blowback chamber, hold the slide as if it were on the gun, look at the back and beneath the rear site, there should be a gap above the rounded black piece that is the blowback chamber, wedge a screwdriver in there, and slowly pry it out, while pushing out the front of it as well. Once it gets loose, watch out as you take it out, as there will be 2 springs that may fall out of the top. Once that’s out, you can remove the outer barrel, and your done. To put is all back together, simply reverse the process and slide it back on to the body of the gun.

Skirmish Worthiness:
Works very well as a backup, the ruggedness holds up and its easy to pull out if you need a quick shot at someone. I've used it on occasion as my primary just for fun with great success, and I've gotten pretty accurate with it
