Review of Gunslinger Girl Season One

After a while of watching Pokemon, and watching a few episodes of Yu Gi Oh, I got really bored of anime. I just didn’t like the never ending series of Pokemon, and the oddity of monster card games come alive. Also, around this time, I started to like more realistic, military based media, such as war movies like Black Hawk Down, and games such as Medal of Honor Frontline. Watching these movies and playing these games, I grew a taste for this genre.
After numerous recommendations from my sister for this anime, I finally and reluctantly sat down and watched the first subbed episode from Triad back in 2003. It was an instant hit, and I couldn’t wait for more. Peace through superior firepower indeed.
Through out, the series is slow paced, and more story driven rather than action based, with is a great thing. The attention to detail is terrific, as it shows everything from the landscapes and seaside of Italy to the Sig Sauer trademarks of Henrietta’s handgun. The animation is very clean, and the few action sequences are executed beautifully. One thing that stands out the most is the gunplay. It is very well done, and very obvious that the creators know a thing or two about firearms. For example, when the characters are not firing their weapons, their finger is off the trigger. It might seem like a minor detail to most, but it makes the animators/ characters look even more professional on screen by following basic gun safety. Only afterward that more Hollywood movie stars start to pose with their fingers of their triggers in posters and films. To some one like myself, who is well versed in gun safety for my replica airsoft weapons, and who has a mild form of OCD, it only makes the series as a whole more believable.
Room clearing and various armed and unarmed fights in the series were action packed and realistic. The guns sounded real, no dual wielding in sight, and the girls looked like they knew what their doing. Gunslinger Girl is a far cry from the typical, action movie plot, with some buff dude spraying and praying, killing people left and right. But that’s a good thing.
One more thing worth mentioning is the soundtrack. The Italian style orchestra and opera suits and complements the Italian setting very well, and adds so much emotion and power to many of the scenes in the series. Many of the sadder, emotional scenes are etched into my memory along with the soundtrack, because of how well it is done.
I love the many ways of that Gunslinger Girl is different. The story line is intriguing and unique, the music powerful and emotional, the animation is clean and beautiful. The well done and detailed fight sequences is the icing on the cake for action movie fans like myself. Overall, the series is more than memorable, and is definitely one of my favorite works of all time. My only gripe was it was on the short side and we all had to wait five years for the next season. Gunslinger Girl reawakened my interest in anime, which is why I hold this series close to my heart.
