Pros: innovative design, holds lots of things
Cons: too much velcro?

The MAXPEDITION Monkey Combat Admin Pouch, was designed by MilspecMonkey and manufactured by Maxpedition. Bellow you will see a VERY detailed description of the Monkey Combat Admin Pouch and its' features. While it may seem like alot, this little chest pouch is full of features.

If you are interested in purchasing an MCAP, please consider buying from MilspecMonkey direct.

MAXPEDITION Monkey Combat Admin Pouch - by MilspecMonkey

Overall: 7" x 6.5" x 1.5"
Rear Sleeve: 7" x 5.5"
Main: 6" x 6" x 1"
Middle Security: 6" x 6"
Frontal: 6" x 5" x 0.5"
Mini Frontal: 5" x 2"
ID Area: 5" x 4.5"
I've had this design cooking for probably over a year and I'm happy to announce it is finally here. In collaboration with Maxpedition, this will be my first public release design. I knew I could count on Maxpedition to make these with exceptional quality using their hard-use gear standards. The main Idea behind the pouch is to find a balance of size for an admin pouch. I was unhappy with the other admin pouches I had tried that were too small or too long in one dimension. The Monkey Combat Pouch allows storage of up to 6 multitool sized items, but still leaves room for proper shoulder stocking of one's weapon. It lays fairly compact and flat when empty, but is ready to expand to suit your needs.

Core functionality begins with the main flap. The outside is covered with loop velcro for your patch / ID needs. The inside of the flap has a good panel of hook to allow the flap to accommodate the pouch when empty or full. The flap itself has a sleeve pocket that goes down the back of the main pocket. It works well for additional out-of-the-way organization of slim items. The main pocket has 1.5" depth and has elastic on the front and back sides with 3 divisions each. The user can fill these out or use the preferred side. The elastic division spacing works great for pistol magazines, chem lights, flashlights, multitools, and more. The pocket itself can hold many diverse items such as 2, 30 round NATO magazines vertically, gloves, GPS units, handcuffs, pens + small notebooks, the list just goes on. A grommet is included for drainage.

The next pocket is the slim high security pocket. The top is fully sealed with velcro and has 2 staggered pull tabs. This area can be hard to open sometimes, but is designed as such to make sure the user can have full confidence they can store crucial items inside. Money, cards, keys, and batteries are just a few examples of appropriate items for this pocket.

Moving forward is the frontal pocket. This area has .5" depth and elastic webbing on the back side with 3 divisions like on the main pocket. 3 multitool sized items can fit or medium thickness items such as cell phones and PDAs. The frontal pocket can be used to hold the smaller items more securely or to help divide items that would have all fit in the main pocket, but would be banging around. A short pocket is connected to the Front pocket which came out as a freebie in the pouch construction. Smaller items like chap-stick can be placed here to make them more easily accessible since they lay higher up in the pouch instead of at the bottom.

Another feature setting the Monkey Combat Pouch apart from the rest is the unique ID flap. Although at first glance, one may want to pull up on the pull tab, the tab is pulled down to open. A clear vinyl sleeve with anti-glare texture allows placement for 2 IDs, a mini map, ballistic sheet, HVT pictures, or whatever slim item one wants to put in there. The folding of the pocket naturally makes 2 divisions, but there is only one opening to deal with. When the flap is closed, the goods are velcro sealed securely inside. This allows the user to quickly flash their ID or view intel when needed, then go back to business being fully concealed. The way the ID flap is stitched to the pouch creates a cave area where items can be stored. A flashlight, beatstick, or knife fit in here well for quick access, but low security. Alternatively slim paper documents can be hidden inside as well.

The back has larger than usual PALS channels to allow the user to fudge between using 3 or 4 PALS channels to mount using 2 long Malice Clips. Although this pouch was made with intent to be chest mounted on one's kit, it can also function well as a general multipurpose / organizer pouch on other locations and gear. It is slim enough to mount on the side of a vest, and works well on backpacks and shoulder bags with PALS webbing.

For extra designer notes:

The main flap length was a challenge. It won't be perfect for every situation, but is a balance of length to close when the pouch is filled, but not too long to be a hassle to deal with then opening.
The pull tabs of the slim middle pocket can be used to assist in holding down items in the front of the main pocket or back of the frontal pocket.
When 30 round NATO magazines are stored in the main pocket, the pouch can't hold much else and still be able to close the main flap.
Pens can be held on the outside using the side elastic and the exterior or interior elastic can be used for lanyard connection points.
The Monkey Combat pouch is available in Maxpedition's great colors of Khaki, ACU, Green, and Black. Check out MilSpec Monkey's video demo for a full breakdown:

Pros: MANY pockets, lightweight, sturdy, lots of hook for patches, did I mention billions of pockets
Cons: Only one I can think of is limited colors. (Wanted Multicam bad! Desire Desert and Standard Marpat), I would also have prefered standard MOLLE/PALS mounting.

What I love about the MCAP:
In my time I have used only 3 other admins pouches. All 3 have suffered from the same problems. First they all seem to lack the compartments and/or pockets I desired to carry my field goods in. (More than a pen. I like to have an energy bar, crack lamps, a shiv or two, my ID, my objective sheets and the like with me in there.) second they lack the Velcro to place the moral and infotel patches I desired on there. (One or two had this, but I didn't own them.) Lastly most other admins just felt so damn insecure. I thought things would fall out easily. (They often did actually.)

Well the Monkey Combat Admin Pouch (Called the MCAP for the remainder of my post) takes care of all of that. Not only does it have a whopping five compartments under the main flap it also has an ID sleeve with room for two IDs or an ID and a sheet. Then it adds a special compartment behind the ID section for securing MORE vital gear. The pouches are also set up so that some have tug strapping for holding tight to cargo, some are smaller for smaller items you wouldn't want to dig at the bottom of a deep pocket for and others still have Velcro in place to make sure vital cargo is secured even as a double measure of added safety in case the main flap is open for whatever reason. (2-is-1. 1-is-none.)

I mean, if you love pockets, this is the bottom line. Lets face it a real warfighter or even an airsofter needs to carry a lot of stuff with them and the MCAP just puts it all where it needs to be. You see I love mission specific kit in my utils pouches, GPs, gadget pouches and E&EPs. I don't want eye drops in my Escape & Evasion pouch. I don't want my Xyience booster in my Med Pouch. The Monkey allows me to indulge my selfish obsessive compulsive need to compartmentalize my kit.

In addition to that the MCAP is a quite a bit larger than the average admin, but since most of that is depth the pouch doesn't encumber you. It is real light as well. I would say that it weighs only a little more than my Eagle admin, costs the same and you get a lot more for your money. It is real tough too. The MCAP may have a lot of hook and loop, but this doesn't mean they will fray or pull apart easily. Maxpedition has sewn the holy heck out of this thing. Its real tough stuff. The Hook and Loop even feels like it is really built to take a punishing.

In addition to being versatile and tough the MCAP is designed to accentuate other MOLLE/PALS equipment that aren't vests. For instance you can strap one of these to a go-bag and really add to value of that bag. You could also add the MCAP to your car visor or slide it under your car seat and load it up with stuff for those emergency occasions we all dread. Fill it up with buttons and needles as a sewing kit, some bandages and some pyro kit and make sure your wife/husband or yourself always have handy supply of life giving goods in a small discreet pack.

What I don't love about the MCAP:
let me first say that this pouch is mostly something to sing about and I say that with no reservation. The few things that bug me about it are minor to say the least, but they are my own personal niggles so I will voice them and let you glean what you can from them.

The first thing that I wish was better about the MCAP is the fact that it doesn't come in a few patterns I would have like to have seen made. Multicam, Desert Digital MarPat and Woodland Standard MarPat would have been much welcome selections for color. I fully understand that with something that is mostly Hook and Loop in the front a camo pattern is less important, still I would have liked the option. This is a gripe I have with most Maxpedition gear actually. I cannot say how much I love their gear, but simply adding these colors to their palette of colors for gear would send my opinion of them into another dimension. Also the tan/brown that Maxpedition does stock doesn't match anything but their gear. The khaki MCAP does somewhat match my MC gear and my coyote gear, but it still isn't spot on. I don't like that. Perhaps this is a personal taste issue, but I remark about it to inform you about it.

Second is the fact that this is MALICE gear. I personally don't like MALICE kit. I like MOLLE/PALS kit with the strapping built on. I wish someone would create something better, but for now I like that little button. I don't like that I have to buy Malice clips every time I want to affix a bit of MALICE gear. They say they are reusable, but I worn out 6 MALICE clips in my short time using them and that annoys me. Top that off with the fact that the damned things are black...and can be seen under some gear and you have a recipe for clash in my book. The MCAP uses them, but I don't like it. My solution? I sewed on my own coyote brown straps with a Billy button on it so it looks like MOLLE/PALS standard. No black crap for me. Again this is a personal taste thing.

The last minor gripe I have about the MCAP is the fact that the hidden external pocket that is under the ID section of the front panel lacks retention bungees or some other form of elastic retention system for holding gear in that pocket. I understand it was intended for a KA BAR or some other kind of sheathed item to go in there. Still a simple bungee cord along the inside would go a long way to assure some much needed piece of mind.

Conclusion
All in all I think this is a fine pouch. It is my personal opinion that it is the finest admin out there. I know I am only familiar with the Eagle, BDS Tactical and Blackhawk/Natick STRIKE admins, but all of them fall far short of the high bar that the MCAP sets in admin pouch standards. It is just a fantastic piece of kit and I recommend it to everyone I know is in the market for one or that owns a vest of any kind. I rated it a 10. The few niggles I have don't warrant reducing it to a 9 as they are mostly personal preference complaints. Do yourself a favor and grab one. You won't be sorry.
