Description: If you ask some people, what do they have in their armory, they might say the have an MP5, or some other common gun. However there is one gun that people don't have that often. The Steyr AUG is an uncommon replica today amongest the Colt and MP5 clones. Sure some people may say that the AUG is butt ugly, it's too modern. A sturdy gun, with lots of metal, no creaks, and unique features make it maybe one of the most under-hyped gun of all time.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Lots of metal, Solid gun, Accurate, Unique
Cons: Not too many add ons, may cost alot of $$ for a first gun, Mini battery

Why an AUG?

When I was an airsoft noob, I had my fair share of bad springers, and I finally felt it was time to try an AEG. I was a fan of the MP5, however when asking around, I heard that the MP5 would not be that accurate for my needs. I play mostly woodland so I need something alittle more accurate, smaller than your average assasult rifle. Then someone suggested the AUG. After thinking about it for two days, I ordered from Dentrinity, and it came about 3 days later.

Arrival-

The box was pretty plain, no fancy graphics. It was neat and serious, it had a no-nonsense look to it. After ripping the box open, I lifted by new baby out. Almost at once I realized what a hefty gun this is! Solid, stock, metal outer barrel, metal rail, I thought damn, this is nice.

The look-

When getting the SR, you're treated to a menacing black finish. The finish isn't as glossy as some of the other Tokyo Marui guns. As I mentioned before, the rail is metal, and 20mm. The SR model (Special Rail, sorry if I'm wrong with the name) means you can slap on any scope you want, as opposed to the Military aug. Of course Marui includes dinky plastic "iron" sights. I recommend that you keep then for emergencys in case your scope fails.

The AUG-
First thing I notice, is how nice an heavy it was. I didn't weight it though. The cocking handle moves back to gain access to the hop-up. A unique thing about this gun is that it can be operated by both leftys and rightys. Switching the side of the dust cover means easy access for the shooter. Also there is no fire selector, squeeze the trigger slighty, semi auto, pull it back all the way, full auto. Field stripping is easy, the gun brakes down into two pieces. Its nice and easy for accessing and tending to jams. The magazine is also nice, true looking to the real steel. A solid "click" of the mag means your good to go. It holds about 80 rounds. The battery is a mini, and fits in the back of the gun. The AUG is also very balanced, so holding it "Swat style" is very easy and not awkward.

Test Fire-

ALWAYS READ THE MANUEL BEFORE USING THE GUN! I was so happy, I stupidy loaded the AUG with .12grams instead of the standard .20grams. Instantly I jammed it up. However since field stripping the gun it was easy to fix. Now with the proper bbs in, it was time for the real test. I fired the AEG, and it does surpass some of the other stock AEGs I've seen. The AUG uses a eg700 motor, so it ensures a steady stream of plastic to the unlucky fool who got in your cross hairs.

Conclusion-
So is the AUG for you? If you want a gun that is accurate enough for woodland combat, but can also be used for urban and some CQB instances, got for it. If you like solid guns, with high metal content without having to install body kits go for it. However if your younger, or your not as strong this may not be for you as it is heavy. Also there are not as much 2nd party mods for this gun so that might be a turn off. Also if your afraid to show up at your local skirmish site, and have odd looks, this isn't for you. But if your not too vain, want a high quality gun, and want to be different from the sea of colt and HK fans go for it! I hope this has been of some help.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): High accuracy, more compact
Cons: Rail dimensions,Mags , battery compartment

The TM Steyr Aug military was the first AEG I ever had.

I later owned a SR version as well.

ONe of the real benefits of the AUg is its compactness, for having a comparable size barrel to non-bullpup config AEGs.

BUllpup = Mag is behind trigger system.IE AUG,Famas etc.

You can get fair accuracy while out in the woodlands, and have a compact enough AEG, to really get around that barrier or corner better.

Some of the problems I have encountered though are :

Battery compartment needs some modifications to accept batteries with larger capacities
Its hard to find mag pouches in MOLLE , that properly fit AUG mags
The SR rail system is fine for scopes with mountrings, but the spacing can be a problem with fixed mounts on some optics.

I found it slightly cumbersome to do fast reloads, due to having to tilt the AEG sideways, or grab towards the back of my hand, to get at the mag release mechanism.

I am sure with enough pratice and over time, one can do it quickly, I simply was not able to go as fast as on traditional AEG setups withthe mag infront of the trigger system.

All in all though , it is a great AEG.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Versatile, well-built, weighty, trigger
Cons: Foregrip loosens, low sights

Synopsis

It's a durable and weighty AEG with normal power, good accuracy and a bullpup design. Well-built with a nice finish, plastics are all very durable and lots of metal in the construction. Shoots as fine as a large rifle, but is compact enough to take it indoors.

Construction

The gun comes apart with the slide of a switch and the twist of a lever. The foregrip, barrel, and hop unit come out as one piece - the outer barrel is metal and the threading on the outside of the barrel gives it a great feel. The receiver (again metal) comes out next, this is the weighty part of the gun, even the rail on top is metal. Lastly there's the trigger, stock, and gearbox. The stock and trigger are made of tough plastic, and the butt of the stock is a removable rubber cap. The distribution of wait across the bullpup layout means the centre of gravity falls roughly in between the trigger and foregrip, so the gun is very well balanced.

Internals

The battery fits in the stock, and because it's quite crowded in there you can only fit a small battery. I have found accessing the battery area to be a bit tricky, I have to remove the rubber cap using my teeth. I always carry a spare battery, so being stuck with smalls isn't so bad, there is a custom shaped larger battery available at some cost though. Stamdard EG700 motor from Tokyo Marui, means this gun shoots as well as a TM M16. Hop up is effective and easily adjustable by sliding the cocking lever back.

Live Fire

The EG700 motor gives a decent rate of fire, typical of a normal AEG. Average power, about 285fps out of the box, TM's hop unit and the long barrel make for a good shot though. The safety is ambidextrous, and as with the real AUG the dust cover at the back can be put on the right or left side. In the real AUG this changes where the shell ejects, but with the airsoft it changes which side of the rifle gives you access to the hop unit. The trigger pull controls whether you get single or full auto. A half pull and out comes a single BB, squeeze a bit harder and you get a stream of plastic. The trigger pull is very easy to get acquainted with, and I prefer it over any fire selector switch.

Practical Use

It's a fairly weighty weapon, so you'll probably want to fit a sling to it, points for the sling are provided. The foregrip can be set either in the usual vertical position or adjusted to lie parallel to the barrel. Unfortunately, the way the foregrip is constructed means that after some use it will start to come loose. The provided "iron" sights are fairly flimsy and not particularly easy to aim through. Get a red dot or a scope fitted soon, but try get some high mounts - If you use a face mask with this rifle you will not be able to line up the sights unless you have high mounts.

Accessories and Upgrades

The supplied magazine will hold 80 rounds, but hicaps are available for 330 rounds. Several silencer/rail kits are available to mount on the barrel. Internals upgrades are available to increase power to 328fps, and a high grade inner barrel is around to improve accuracy. As mentioned earlier, there are other battery options. The small battery will power the gun for most of the day, but there is a specially shaped battery available, or a larger external battery and battery bag. Top rail allows for easy fitting of any optics you want to outfit this gun with.

Conclusion

A great starter AEG because you won't be committed to either woodland or CQB. It's got a really long barrel (actually longer than the G3SG1's, and that's a huge gun) and yet the gun is compact enough for tight spaces. The gun itself is very well built and will last a long time too. So, a fairly cheap, accurate, compact weapon with a decent rate of fire and sturdy construction. Just look out for wobbles in the foregrip.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Built solid, highly accurate, very comfortable, great finish, looks awsome
Cons: battery life, heavy

Ahh, the Steyr Armie Universal Gewer. By far one of the most advanced rifles today. Combine this with Marui quality, and you have something unbeatable.

This my friends is one of the greatest AEG you can buy.

Its built really solid, not shaky, amazingly well made internals. The abs its made of is great, now you may say, "but it must suck because its made of plastic", look the abs on this thing as better than any monkey metal out there.

This gun because of its bullpup design is highly accurate. Its barrel is longer than that of the G3, and that sucker is big! I just got a 1 joule upgrade on my AUG, thing is dead accurate.

One thing you will no doubt learn about this gun is that it's comfortable. The thing melts in your hands, easy to hold it with one hand for running. Heck I could fire it like a pistol.

Great finish on this gun. No burn marks, paint bubbles, or other annoying marks.

And it looks awsome! Its a very menacing looking gun. Put a scope on it to give it a sniper look.

Disadvantages

Battery life could be better. You can get a special battery for lengthened life.

This gun is heavy! Swear its gotta be 8 pounds! Of course the way the gun is designed weight is no big problem.

Conclusion

If you've got the money and like AUGs...

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Compactness+long range effectiveness, barrel swapping versatility, well built,
Cons: bullpup troubles

I just have to add that the lack of accessories for the AUG has largly been remedied over the years. There are now nitro side clamp rails you can attach to the reciever, and two stage HBAR scope rails that you can replace the original rail with to give you space for optics and more.

Additionally, a faily popular upgrade is barrel modifications. The ease and speed of swapping barrel groups with this gun means that it is very possible to switch midgame (maybe HBAR for daytime woodland, switch to carbine as night falls and ranges get shorter).

The main problems that I've had with this gun are dealing with the nature of bullpups. While effective in squeesing a long barrel in a short gun, having all the components within the stock mean that it's big and bulky back there. This makes it harder to manuever the gun in tight spaces when taking it away from your shoulder. Additionally, handling it by the rear is sort of difficult. I had to simply hold the gun over my head once to get through some REALLY thick bush at night. I was holding if under the stock, normally a comfortable and safe place to hold a gun, but this time, I hit the mag release and lost two locaps in the woods...

Lastly, being a bullpup means the any larger mags aren't too comfortable to hold. I got an Emag for mine, and while you can avoid chicken winging, it requires you to twist your wrist outward, making for a fairly uncomforable, but usable, grip.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Barrel length (accuracy/range), compact size, ease of disassembly, rate of fire, unique trigger
Cons: Weight, included sights, mini batteries only

I brought my AUG second hand with an M100 spring and new bushings installed so I can't comment on the stock performance but in the configuration I received it it performs outrageously well. The rate of fire for the power it outputs (340 fps) is insane, unlike other upgraded TM's I have got my hands on there is no sign of the motor even breaking a sweat, let alone straining as it pumps out round after round at a rate of fire that equals my stock TM MP5K PDW.

The first thing you will want to buy when you get this gun is a good reflex sight. The included sights would suffice for a small SMG with a barrel the length of G36c but not for a gun with such a long barrel. This is a minor issue and could be regarded as a positive thing since it lets you decide how much you want to spend on a sight instead of paying for the one TM choose then having to buy another one if you don't like it.

Despite a slightly wobbly foregrip accuracy is much easier to achieve than in a gun like the M16 due to the way the gun pivots about the trigger instead of about 2 inches in from of the magazine. Once I put a reflex sight on aiming was even easier, almost point and click easy.

The rate of fire could be viewed as a disadvantage by opponents of plastic spraying but the hybrid trigger means that you can be as stingy as you like with ammo in semi auto but when someone makes the mistake of running into your sights you can let them know you mean business with a terrifying rate of fire. (This high rate of fire may be a result of a possible motor upgrade[not mentioned when I brought it] or just the new bushings, I don't know because my gun came upgraded)

As for comfort, the way the rubber stock sits in your shoulder gives the impression you could be lying in wait with this gun for a whole game without the slightest shoulder cramp.

Looking at the stock performance I would say that you can't do this gun justice without giving it an upgrade but even stock it should take the effort out of skirmishing without taking a drop of the fun.

This is one of the few unconventional designs where unconventional means better.
