Positive aspects of the product (pros): realistic, fun
Cons: not really practical for skirmishing

Dboys recently brought out 2 models of this gun, There is a wood effect stock version and a real wood stock version. This is a review of the real wooden stock version.

Taken from Wikipedia.
The Karabiner 98k was a bolt-action rifle with Mauser-type action holding five rounds of 7.92x57mm Mauser on a stripper clip, loaded into an internal magazine. It was derived from earlier rifles, namely the Karabiner 98b, which in turn had been developed from the Mauser Model 1898. The Gewehr 98 or Model 1898 took its principles from the Lebel Model 1886 rifle with the improvement of a metallic magazine of five cartridges. Since the rifle was shorter than the earlier Karabiner 98b from which it was derived (the 98b was a carbine in name only, being identical in length to the Gewehr 98 long rifle), it was given the designation Karabiner 98 Kurz, meaning "Carbine 98 Short". Just like its predecessor, the rifle was noted for its reliability, good accuracy and an effective range of up to 500 meters (547 yards) with iron sights.

When I seen this gun I just had to have one. from my earlier days of the commando comic and playing soldiers as a kid this gun was and still is an iconic symbol of the German army during WWII.

I received the gun within 24 hours of ordering it and I have had a smile on my face all day since opening the box and shooting it. More on that later in the review.

So opening the box you are greeted with the gun, 5 shells and a manual. unusually for Chinese guns the box isn't stuffed full of accessories. *note the sling in the pictures was bought separately*

The gun works on the principle of forward cocking unlike a lot of spring guns. basically this means that you cock the bolt and when you push the bolt forward thats when you prime the spring for firing. I find the resistance to prime the spring not to bad however if a larger spring was to be fitted then it might become a bit harder to actually compress the spring.

The finish on this rifle is actually very good. Ok the real deal might have blued steel whereas the replica has black painted furniture but for £100 it's more than acceptable. The castings on the front sight and rear site are pretty good with a high level of detail. The real wood is finished really well looks like it will take a knock or two.

There are no markings on this gun but I don't think this distracts from the gun looking good.

The rear site has a scope rail for a dedicated sniper scope. You won't be able to just add any old scope of RIS attachment as this rail is meant for the 4x Zeiss ZF42 telescopic sight.

OK so how exactly does it fire I hear you ask? Well you load a BB into the front of each shell, feed the shells into the internal magazine, cock the gun, aim and fire. The it's a case of cocking the gun, the spent shell will eject and you lad the next round. This is the fun factor for me. I found myself loading five shells then firing them off and then searching for the shells which had landed everywhere and doing it all again. I have ordered a few more shells and some stripper clips to make this easier.
The gun doesn't come with any stripper clips which is a shame as the would allow for faster reloaded. Considering that the stripper clips only cost £4 it is something Dboys should have added.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d94/mightyjebus/Kar98/shellsloaded.jpg

I measured the FPS using a MADBULL chrono and it consistently fires at 298 - 300 FPS. The rate of fire is down to how fast you can fire and cock it Smile

The accuracy seems pretty good and I think it would not be unreasonable to expect to hit targets at 40 meters. Obviously the range and accuracy will be dependent on the hop and Dboys have made adjusting the hop easy. All you do is lift the rear site and adjust the allen grub with an allen key.

There is instructions in the manual on how to strip and care for the gun. The bolt is easily removed and can be cleaned and re-greased without to much trouble.

Now you have probably realised that this isn't going to be the best weapon to skirmish with because of the rate of fire and the fact that you have to collect the spent shells once you have fired them however I think it has the potential for a pretty good snipers rifle or even being used in the ever growing WWII games.
The spare shells and stripper clips aren't that expensive and it might actually make you think before taking a shot.

As I mentioned earlier it made me grin and each time I pick it up I end up spending 10 minutes firing some BB's just because it's fun.

The only downsides I have mentioned are the lack of stripper clips and maybe it would have been nice if Dboys had chucked in 10 shells but thats just me nit-picking.

Now go buy one, stick a sauce pan on your head and wander about shouting things like " gott in himmel" ,"hands hock" and "nein".

Quick Comparison amongst airsoft:
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6392/clipcomparisionx.jpg
****Accessories: (EXTRA, option for further investment)
*Shells sold in sets of 5, *NOTE: RSOV sells in pairs of 2 for some reason
*Stripper Clip -Quality control is weak. *NOTE RSOV sells in pairs of two

Cosmetically:
Made in China, so heads up. When I first receive it, I can see wood chipping as well as the wood below wing safety. I could also see dings on my bolt handle and the magazine follower.
The paint on the gun chips extremely easily, as I tried to place my gun on cement gently it still scratch it. The bolt area the paint and metal strips quite a bit. When I field strip it for maintainence I always find metal and paint dust. The wood is what I should say...They are real wood tried to be real but it feels like plastic to me. Also beware; the wood behaves much more like brittle plastic to me, especially the dents and the surface feels more like plastic. I got some dents on my stock already, and I will say you need to use gloves and handle it like a baby otherwise its easily scratch and/ or dent.

Operation:
Overall the bolt push cock system with the shells isn’t my favourite. It’s really hard to cock if you push it in slowly, if you push it fast and the bullet did not feed properly you will feel the pain on the palm and the shell will be dented.
The problem also for the bolt is that it seem to have a choke point where the spring is compress, is position also accounts for many feeding problems
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6979/boltchokepoint.jpg
These are just minor complaints compared to the stripper clips. The clips have poor tolerance; about 40% of my clips have issue with the clips going INTO the magazine. One out of 12 has problem on both end of the clip.

Accuracy:
The ranges I took are just in my garage so about 22 feet total (yes it’s a big garage. Largest you can build without extra permit in my city) the accuracy of this gun is iffy, I can get 1inch but, that’s with a gun being a meter stick. The hop up is a pain in the ass; you need use an l ranch to adjust it. Also in you reduce the hop up too much you can actually disassemble it and it’s REALLY hard to reassemble it with my fat fingers. I would say the 2 piece inner barrel really ruined the gun.

Accessories:
Officially from D-Boys the only accessories available are:
*Extra shells which comes in sets of 5 (RSOV likes to sell em in twos)
*Stripper Clip.
Others available are:
*Sling, I use a Tanaka one, but really WWII 98k repro will work since it’s the same design
*Mauser 98k Stripper Clips Brass and Steel. Based on shooters of Mauser 98k, Brass is better for single use and steel is much better to reuse.
*ZF41 Scope
*ZF39 Scope this one will require modification to the receiver of the Dboys 98k just like the Mauser one. Just a note ZF39 is the ones most people are familiar with for games and movies.
*Pouches, any Mauser 98k pouches would work.
*Bayonet the Dboys have Bayonet mount like the Mauser one, theoretically it should would.

Ratings:
Compared to what I heard people say on the forum, this is my first airsoft gun for your information

Realism: 3.5/5
*only 2 modes of fire (Safe locked, or fire unlock instead of 3 where the trigger lock, and bolt unlock does not exist)
*No Trades c'mon you clone peoople's design why not real gun's trademark?
*Low quality wood in my opinion, felt like plastic to me
*Shells design is cool

Handling: 2/5
*Constantly have feeding problem where the shells did not enter the chamber properly and stuck
*Ejecting shells doesn't work unless you pull it back fast
*If you do not lube the chamber the shell will be stuck in there.

Newb usability: 3/5
*Its cheap...the gun is shells aren't
*Spring design = More Reliable, however the shells makes it otherwise.
*Accuracy, dont expect to snipe people with it I would say 50ft-75ft as max
*Its not really a hot gun, most site would probably allow the FPS even if its auto

General Outcome: 3/5
+Its a shell ejecting gun great for plinkers
+It is the cheapest gun and the cheapest accessory available
+close to the real steel except the bolt cocks when you lift the bolt in real steel, and theres not trademark

-Made in China, poor quality, accessory is poor durability. Shells dents easily. Also I wish the 8mm mauser shells can work with this, which it does not. Since brass bullets are much more durable then these.
-Poor accuracy from 3 stage barrel, makes this an infantry weapon if you really want to skirmish with it.

What is this gun suitable for?
Plinkers:
*If you can't afford buying 8mm Mauser or reloading it get the airsoft 98k. If you can buy the 8mm Mauser 98k from surplus, Its most likely cheaper $500 would probably get a decent working one. Reliability of a 64 years old gun is probably better than a new Dboys
*If you don't want to go to range and would like a backyard shooter pick this

Wall hanger:
No reason, if its displayed you need to have it displayed according to a non-restricted firearm, so a Tanaka or 8mm Mauser 98k beats it.

Skirmisher:
*Infantry, Wanna meter stick for your rifle? Want to take care of your $3/bullet? Negative to both rule out this one
*Sniper, Wanna inaccurate gun? Rule this one out Go for tanaka its better with since stage barrel, and adjustable fps

Newbies: If yes to the following pick this
*Want a rifle that is close to the real operation?
*Not planning to skirmish?
