Pros: realistic, well made, cheap and accurate
Cons: cheap accessories

I'm a big fan of the AK series rifle and even more of a big fan of the Kalash AK series due to the fact that they are well made, reliable and cheap.

This is a review of the Kalash RK-05 which is a AEG of the AK74M.

from wkipedia:

The AK-74 is a 5.45 mm assault rifle adapted in the early 1970s in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov from the earlier AKM. It was introduced in 1974 and first saw service with Soviet forces engaged in the Afghanistan conflict. The weapon’s name is an abbreviation for (Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1974, Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1974 года; “Kalashnikov automatic rifle model 1974”). Currently the weapon is in use by the majority of countries of the former USSR. Additionally, unlicensed versions were produced in Bulgaria (AK-74 and AKS-74U), China (Type 88), the former East Germany (MPi-AK-74N, MPi-AKS-74N, MPi-AKS-74NK), Poland (wz. 1988 Tantal, wz. 1989 Onyks) and Romania (AKS-74).

In 1991 the Izhmash factory in the city of Izhevsk began production of an improved variant of the AK-74 – the AK-74M (M – Russian: Модернизированный; Modernizirovanniy or "Modernized") assault rifle. Apart from several minor production improvements the rifle also features a new synthetic stock made from a black, glass-filled polyamide that is shaped like the AK-74 fixed stock, but also folds like in the AKS-74. Additionally the AK-74M uses a reinforced muzzle device and dust cover. Each AK-74M is fitted with a side-rail bracket for mounting optics. The AK-74M has been accepted as the new service rifle of the Russian Federation.

The AK74 has been well modeled in various guises nowadays. It was only a few years ago that you had either the Tokyo Mauri AK47(S) or an expensive Guarder kit to get a Eastern Bloc weapon. Various company's now make the AK47, AKM and different AK74's. Kalash, as for as I can gather, are actually a company called Dboys who are more well know for their M16/M4 variants.

The Kalash is well boxed and surrounded by cardboard, polystyrene and foam. The cocking handle has been removed for shipping and it's a simple job of removing the top receiver and slotting it into place. Also inside the box you will find a charger, a 1100Mah 8.4V stick battery, a sling, a cleaning rod, a small bag of 200 BB's, the Hicap magazine and the manual.

The battery seems like it is up for the job of powering the AEG however the Kalash can fit a larger (i.e. longer) battery into the battery storage area. I use the G&P 8.4v 2200Mah stick batteries in my Kalash and this usually gives enough juice to last a whole day's skirmishing. I think that if you only have the supplied battery you might need to purchase a second battery for a full days skirmishing.
The manual, cleaning rod and the bag of BB's have been assigned to my spares box probably never to see the light of day again.
The sling is not brilliant and so far I have went through two of these slings whilst skirmishing. The clip end has a tendency to deform under pressure and running around a forest with the AK around my neck seems to do that. It might be worth investing in a replacement sling and there are various websites that will sell you a original AK sling for not too much money.
The charger has been chucked in the bin as I don't trust it plus I have an intelligent charger for charging my batteries.

Ok onto the Magazine. Now first lets talk about the earlier Kalash magwells. When the first Kalash Ak's were released it was found that not all after-market magazines fitted inside the Kalash. This was due to the Magazine release being to long. Snorkelman found that by removing a small piece of the magwell sorted the problem and all magazines would fit.
Now I have tried G&P, MAG, Star and ICS AK74 magazines in this Kalash without modding the mag release and all fit and work fine apart from the Star magazines. I find that it's not only the Kalash AEG's that have a problem with the Star magazine. So it looks like Kalash have listened to it's buyers and sorted out the Magazine release. It's still a tight fit with all magazines but everyone apart from the Star mags fits and feeds fine (the Star magazine doesn't actually lock into place).

I removed the pistol grip on the AK74M and had a look at the supplied motor and while I was there I seen that the gearbox is using plastic bushings. I'm planning on cracking open the gearbox shortly but more on that later.
The motor seems to be of a decent standard and produces a BB per minute of 750 when using the supplied battery. I tried a larger ampage battery and this produced the same results. If you want to increase the rate of fire then you will need to switch to a 9.6v or larger battery.

The Kalash Ak74M strips similar to a real steel AK74. you turn a lever on the gas block which allows the gas parts to be removed. you then flip a little lever in the front of the lower hand guard and this allows the lower receiver to be removed. The Flash hider/eliminator is screwed onto the front sight and is a 2 piece affair. You have a -14 mm thread and that is actually an adapter which screws into the 24mm flash-hider (Again just like the real steel version).
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d94/mightyjebus/AK74M%20review/fieldstripped.jpg
The inner barrel extends into the flash-hider by about 2 inches (45-50mm) and looks to be a 6.04 inner barrel.

The difference between this AK and the other Kalash releases is that this AK has a solid stock whcih folds. There are only a few of this type of AK available currently. The first was a guarder kit then ICS released the first AK74M but it didn't have the folding stock ability. Tokyo Mauri have just released a AK74M which also has a blow back feature however the TM AK74M isn't compatible with any magazines apart from the ones made by TM for the AK74M. I believe CYMA and UNICORN also produce a solid folding stock AK but I have never seen or held one so I can't compare them to the Kalash.
The stock when extended is rock solid. no wobbles, creaks or rattles. It is made of plastic as opposed to the real steel polymer one but it looks good with only a small seam from the forming process letting it down. This can be removed with a sharp blade in a craft knife.
When folded the Stock is again solid and locks into place with a nice click. The paint where the stock locks into the receiver when folded is starting to chip away and I think i a short period of time this AK will look well worn. This is a good or bad thing depending on how you like your AK's to look.

The scope mount on the side of the Ak suffers from the same problem a lot of airsoft AK's have. It is slightly to narrow to fit real russian optics onto it. ell actually they fit on but just fall off when you pick the AK up Smile
I have found that by adding two small strips of electrical tape to the rail the scope will stay on. You can also add a washer to the optic itself however the electrical tape method is quicker and easier.

Now I mentioned earlier that at some point I was going to crack open the gearbox when the reason for that is that it's currently chronoing in at 370 FPS. Now this is too hot for the UK and I will need to add a smaller spring to bring it down to 328 FPS +/- 7%. I think a M100 spring will bring it down to that level however like most AEG's it might require a little trial and error to find the right spring.

well the last thing to mention is the paintwork on the outside of the Kalash. The Kalash series have seen various paint jobs since they where introduced. The very first AK's copied the finish on the VFC AK, then they had a matt black finish and now on the RK-05 we find a satin textured finish. Now to be honest I like it. it looks the part and seems to be hard wearing. The other thing about the new finish is that it matches the stock and plastic furniture nicely.
in the picture below you can see the difference in paintwork form various Kalah models of Ak. The top AK is the RK-03 which has wooden furniture, the middle AK is the RK-02 which has black furniture and a skeleton folding stock and the bottom AK is the RK-05. you will notice that the front sight and gas block are also the same colour as the rest of the gun on the RK-05. This to me adds to the appeal of the RK-05.

so there you have it. The Kalash RK-05(AK74M). Do i like it? yup it's a great little AEG and I can't rate Kalash as a company high enough.
