Description:
|
Right first impressions;
it came in the usual colourless cardboard box, the box was wrapped in a mile and a bit of blue bubble wrap, but i eventually salvaged it.
the gun comes with rear iron sights attached, but the front sights have to be attached via double sided tape i doubt this would stay put for long in a skirmish!
the scope and scope rail were not attached, the scope rail must be bolted in place with 3 screws (my box came with only 2!), and the scope is fitted onto this rail.
the actually metal parts are not fitted into the stock, the barrel and cylinder complex have to be slided into the stock, and then quite an alarming amount of force is needed to slot it in place.
the main metal parts are held in place by two Allen bolts (less that the scope!) all the Allen keys required come in the box.
before you fit the metal parts into the stock, you have to fit the mag catch in (for Christ sake don't lose that little spring that pings away when you first try to clip it in!) out this is in place it is secure.
after each game i strip the gun down again and oil everything except the barrel (the inside, obviously i oil the external barrel!), and so i haven't had any problems with the bare function of this weapon.
the sling attachments can be unscrewed, the first modification i did to this gun was fill the sling attachment screw holes with "locktight", and i replaced the loops for the sling to attach to with key rings (the standard loops break really easily), and have had no problems with that so far...
i attached two cable ties around the line that connects the two scope covers, so i can keep the caps on until i want to take a shot, and then i wont drop them, this keeps the sight in good condition (use black cable ties!)
the mags have to be firmly placed in the stock, otherwise the mag catch may not have clicked, and the mag will fall, insultingly to the ground!
without hop up, bullet droop becomes notable above 30m. however if you add anything more than a few mm of hop up, the bullet will go skyward!, so you have to find the right setting (i marked the position with permanent pen) the bb will fly accurately up to 50 m (this is with a .2 g bb and 400fps), i managed to get all my 30 shots within the 0 of the 50 at 50m!
with .2 g bb's and 400fps you have no hope of getting any real success in sniping with this gun, it needs the "air brake mod" taking the velocity to 500fps (if the original fps was 400) and using much heavier bb's.
my rifle is two tone, so i was able to buy it from the internet without being registered, however this isn't an issue with a sniper as i put a camo sheaf over it for games.
the scope has variable zoom from 3x to 9x, the reticle is also illuminated (or not, it has variable light intensity settings), the ilumination is good when fighting in a scenario with a lot of black in the background, so you can actually see your cross hairs (the illumination can be seen by your target if you are looking strait at him!) don't use the ilumination at night, as you will be dazzled, and unable to see anything... also scanning with zoom at 9x is tedious, as it is hard to find anything, whereas it is better to scan at 3x zoom, and then when a possible target is seen, zoom into 6x or so. one problem with the zoom is that the reticle doe sent change size; so the "range finder" loses any reliability once you change zoom, however if you learn how far a target is related to the lines and his shoulder width at 3x scale, you can do your range finding at that zoom, and then change to take your shot (this is fine until you forget that you left your gun at 9x zoom and start digging holes!).
altogether this gun is quality for £114 quid JG have done a good job, as this is their only sniper rifle, id say they have made a nice reputation for themselves!
i met a sniper with the TM "g-spec" which is the "proper" version of this gun, as this is a Chinese clone of the TM version, there are a few differences; the bolt handle on the TM is smooth, whereas the JG has grip, the scope he had on hid rifle had not got a range finder, and no illumination, yet it did have zoom from 3x to 9x.
apart from the bright colour of mine the two guns were the same! (his gun broke down at lunch time, whereas i let a random kid use mine pretty roughly, and he got 2 kills in one game without it being turned to matchwood!) the plastic in the stock of this gun is really tough, although the green paint get stripped of by any minor scratches.
one users tip:
make sure that the guns is held perfectly upright when firing otherwise the pellet will veer violently away from your point of aim, this is easier said than done, as you have to learn this by feel, and you only get one shot! (although the mag holds 30...).
the black paint (looks like "hammeright") gets scratched by most metal scratches, but anything less tough than the barrel wont scratch it!
overall, good gun!
by the way its based on the Remington 700
because of this gun, a bit of my brothers cheek is lying somewhere in the garden!
Update, i went to elite action games (worthing) with this gun for the third time (finely i have sorted out the hop up finely, so the pellet is almost pin point accuracy out to 50m!), and as i expected we ended up doing a game of "speed ball" with an "ICBM" in the center of an open field with no real cover apart from long grass.
both teams charged across the open towards the helpless foam missile in the center, but i stood with my supposed "cheap Chinese clone, oh and its green..." and started hitting people at 50m! problem was, i had .2g bb's, so they couldn't feel it, they were running, so it would be hard to notice a single, long range hit and also my gun hasn't had any upgrades yet, so there was probably less than 400 fps (however the supplier quoted "410fps", and if i was able to hit at that range, i hope that is true...)which from what i have heard, actually reduce accuracy (air brake mod only!) if velocity...
Note to readers!
if you have any "reliable evendence" that supports the airbrake mod working, please pm me your experience, or pm a link...
when i say reliable evedence, i meen; 1,when the tester chrono's just before, and after the mod,
2, he/she only changes one thing, 3, he/she shows how much he acutally cuts off (although proving it makes any difference is first priority...), 4, he fires more than one shot through the chrono, to eliminate chances of a "fluke".
thanks
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Rifle "broke", simptoms; bolt pulled back (easy), then when i tried to close the bolt it required more force than usual and then it jumped forward without compressing the spring.
trigger sear showed wear, i plasterd the sear with epoxy with steel shards in it... then filled the repair down to the original sear shape before the damage.
the repair worked for around 15 shots and then it broke. the trigger sear is made of a cheap ALLOY not steel, so it is easy to damage if you are rough on the bolt. either that or it merely succumbs to wear of use.
replacement sears cost between £20 - £35
CONCLUSION, buy a proper sear, the factory fitted one is inadiquet, one reason why the BAR 10 is cheaper than the VSR 10 is this different level of quality.
final lasting repair was to drill a hole into the sear, i then tapped a screw into it. the screw acted as the new surface of the sear, and has held up for a game so far, i will update this the longer it lasts.

Slight Issues with build quality
|

Very good rifle at a very good price, it shoots straight and far, im using 0.3g bb's and i have a usable range of up to 50m, was chrono'd standard at 350fps so the ''400fps'' claims may be a little BS.
The scope is good and usable, i wouldnt bother with the illumination though, overall build quality is very good, but i had an issue with the gun not cocking, after checking the sears it became apparent that the piston had rounded over where the sear latches on to, the solution to this was to rotate the piston to a 'fresh' area on the ledge, this has appeard to work very well but i have a pss10 piston on the way to completly iliminate this.
Ive done some simple mods such as sealing the hop rubber and cylender head with PTFE tape and also removing the airbrake completly, these mods have made it shoot noticably better and provide very good compression.
The barrel is 6.03mm standard (measured) but im upgrading with a lalax barrel fo some better consistancy.
Overall i think its a very good rifle and whould highly recomend it for an upgrade base, im planning to go to 500fps, and to be honest if your doing this theres not much point buying the marui VSR because all the parts that you would be replacing on that you would be on the JG so you would end up with vertualy the same gun.
