Black Hawk S.O.L.A.G. Kevlar Assault Glove

This is gona be a short review for me because there’s only so much to say about a pair of gloves.

I bought these out of need for a new set, having lost my old pair of 5.11’s. I picked them up from Blackhawk’s website and yes, a lot of people actually write BlackHawk off as “733t operatorz” but they do actually make some nice gear.

I purchased a pair of the black Kevlar SOLAG’s for about $80. Word of advice, order larger than you would normally. Every other glove sizing chart I’m a solid medium, but for Blackhawk I’m between a Large and XL. I guess they assume most people will order larger than they have to and have offset the chart a bit.

Anyway, personally, I’ve always preferred half-finger gloves to full-finger, but when it came time to buy another set, I figured “Why not” and I got the Black Hawks. Sizing issues aside, my first impressions were wow. Rarely does this hold true, but in this case you do get what you pay for.

They’re made of Kevlar, which is a nice touch when concerning durability and handling, and leather, which besides appearing to be high quality, is something I personally always like seeing in a glove that’s going to get heavy use.

I’ll break this down into three parts; comfort, features, and use.

First features. Besides the aforementioned materials the gloves feature two retention systems; a Velcro tab against the back of the hand and a gauntlet Velcro slip. They both offer great retention and yet don’t have any pressure points, something I’ve experienced with cheaper gloves. The gloves also feature, for what people it applies to, carabiners, which, given the fact that the attachment points are on the underside of the wrist, I don’t know how useful will be but I suppose if your mountaineering or climbing in general it may come in handy.

A more airsoft-oriented feature that I found was nice was the thick padding on the back of the hand and fingers. As anyone whose been hit close range in the hand can say, gloves with padding are a God-send, as the more taunt skin on the back of the hand has a tendency to be cut open much easier than on other parts of the body (not counting that it hurts a helluva lot more too).

Likewise the tips of the fingers offer a wrap around piece of leather that reduces wear and tear on the gloves by not allowing a seam to be constantly rubbed and slowly worn away.

One final feature is the Kevlar. The SOLAG glove is billed as being cut resistant and, obviously, I decided to put that to a small test. Using my CRKT M16-01KZ I gave the exposed Kevlar portions of the back of the thumb three pulls with the knife, applying a moderate amount of force (pressing down with a bit of my weight into it) and it left no marks or sign of wear. After using them in about six matches I’d say that the Kevlar would probably survive a full knife strike, at least once, which, baring those who think they need it, is an interesting talking point on the gloves and is an added bonus for durability.

Features Grade: 10/10
They have everything you’d ever want in a TAC glove and leave nothing to be desired.

Now comfort. They… well they fit like gloves. Actually to fair I’m in between sizes so they fit okay, I have a little room at the ends of the finger tips but the base of the hand and palm are perfect. This shouldn’t be a deterrent to buying since everyone’s hand is different and no glove is guaranteed to always be a perfect length (unless it’s custom). Regardless of this they are very comfortable gloves. The palm isn’t too thick that causes unneeded pressure when holding something and the spacing between the fingers is tapered just a bit which allows for increased dexterity.

Comfort Grade: 9/10
The miss sizing does detract a bit of comfort but overall they’re a great fit and extremely comfortable to wear.

Last is use. This being the most important aspect I cannot stress this enough: these gloves work. I’ve had SWAT, 5.11, and Oakley and I’ve found that the Blackhawk SOLAG is the most comfortable glove when shooting a gun or doing anything that is normal in an airsoft environment. I would suspect (no experience yet (weight 4 years)) that they would also be an ideal glove for combat as well.

When gripping a handgun they allow easy hand on hand holding and operation of the pistol’s controls. Even on smaller framed guns like PPK the gloves are not too bulky to disallow use.

On a rifle they are equally comfortable. A note on reloading, I’ve noticed in the past that some gloves stick the Velcro on magazine pouches. Since the outside of the fingertips and palm are covered in leather (albeit thin) it prevents any stick-ups which is a nice plus.

Use Grade: 10/10
These gloves don’t hinder the use of guns or gear in anyway and are essentially a second layer of skin on the hands.

(Note, trigger discipline was suspended for pics Wink )

Overall I give these gloves a 10/10. The sizing is more of a personal issue and I would highly advice these gloves to anyone needing a new pair.

Black Hawk catches a lot of flack for their position as one of the leading brands and having a bit of an elitist attitude, and on 90% of their equipment I would agree with having a more suspicious attitude, but when it comes to the SOLAG Kevlar gloves I believe that Black Hawk truly distinguishes itself from the majority of the pack.
