KWA MP7A1

Introduction

After my last few reviews I got a few PM’s to the effect I’m a harsh critic and a few of my reviewed guns are in fact better than I found them to be. All I can say to that is if I am in fact a harsh critic, it is purely because I have high standards. I’m not going to say an Echo 1, JG, or Galaxy gun is “good for its price.” I’m going to compare it to the gold standard. If you have to make an excuse for a gun performance… well that says it all doesn’t it? I’ll rate a TM, STAR, and Classic Army Proline higher than clone brands or even non-clone ACM guns because they are in fact better and making excuses for their lower quality serves no purpose.

With that in mind I come to the KWA MP7A1 GBB SMG, a gun that by now most airsofters know needs no excuse. Decked out from head to toe in H&K trades, built like a rock,

Real Steel History

*Taken from Modern Firearms.ru

“The HK MP7 Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) is a member of a relatively new class of small arms, called Personal Defense Weapons (PDW; such specialized weapons are build since the start of WW2). The PDW are intended, as name implies, to be a defensive sidearm for second-line troops, vehicle crews and other military personnel who normally not issued with assault rifles. Previously, these troops were issued with pistols or submachine guns, but proliferation of body armor in recent years made those guns ineffective. The first firearm, intended as "the new age PDW" and offered in that class was Belgian-made FN P90, and it had special low-impulse, high-velocity ammunition, capable of penetration of current military body armor and helmets at ranges of 100 meters and beyond, while being much smaller and lighter, than assault rifle. The HK MP7, originally known simply as HK PDW, is another entry in the PDW class, and thus is a direct rival to FN P90.

The HK MP7, first announced in 2000, entered production in 2001 and, by early 2007, is officially adopted by German military, as well as some German special police units, such as KSK, and also offered for export sales. The British Military Police issues HK MP7A1 to its personnel since 2005, and it is believed that some South Korean special forces also use MP7A1.

The HK MP7 submachine gun / personal defense weapon has layout of a typical compact submachine gun (or a large pistol), with magazine being inserted into pistol grip, with folding forward grip and telescoped buttstock. The action of the MP7A1 is somewhat unusual for weapon of such small size, since it is gas operated, rotating bolt design, which strongly resembles the action of the HK G36 assault rifle, suitably scaled down. The ambidextrous fire mode selector/safety switch allows for semi-auto and full-auto modes. MP7A1 it designed to fire special, high velocity ammunition, 4.6x30mm, that looks like scaled down rifle round. That ammunition is unique to the MP7 and another HK weapon, the HK UCP / P46 pistol.

The receiver of MP7A1, along with integral pistol grip, is made from the polymer with steel reinforcements. Top side of the receiver hosts a Picatinny-type accessory rail for sight mountings. Standard sighting equipment is usually a set of low-profile open sights on quick-detachable mounts, plus a collimating (red-dot) sight Additional rails can be installed on either side of receiver, next to its front end. The MP7A1 could be fired single-handedly, or using both hands, either like the pistol or using a front grip. Telescopic buttstock can be extended to give additional stability. With buttstock and front grip are collapsed, the MP7 can be carried like any big pistol in the special holster, and can be effectively used in close combat.”

Again this is a rare time that I haven’t even seen a real version of the firearm in question, but as far as I know there are very few MP7A1’s in the U.S. as is, so as much I would really, really like to, I doubt I’ll ever have a chance to fire one of these. As far as I know though, KWA did in fact have access to a real MP7A1 when designing this gun so it should by all accounts be very realistic.

First Impressions

I bought this off of planeman on the boards and it arrived with everything included with the new gun. It comes with a KWA Patch w/ Velcro (oh yes I was excited about the patch), the gun, the magazine, a few papers, some l gun lube, and hopup adjustment tool. That’s it. No funky magazine loader to be seen Wink .

Lifting the gun out of the Styrofoam container you feel instantly this is a bit of a heft. The gun weighs in at a good four and half pounds, which is actually a full pound heavier than the realsteel!

Appearance

Well I’m a self admitted H&K fanboy and this is just such a person’s wet dream. Totally and legally licensed with Heckler and Koch trademarks courteously of Umarix, it brandishes the trades quite happily. With H&K emblazoned on the pistol grip, on the faux serial plate under the stock, and mention on a little Umarix blerb on the right side of the gun one knows this is clearly H&K approved.

Also of note is that all the trademarks and “printed” items on this gun are not simply painted on the exterior of the gun, but professionally inlayed which means that for one, they look a lot better and give the gun some depth and for two, they shouldn’t rub off like the trademarks on some Chinese clones often do.

Even without considering the trademarks the MP7A1 is a looker. Everything just looks right. The plastic body has a nice rough sheen to it that just makes one sure that this is a real gun, as does the paint on the metal portions which seems to be keeping in line with KWA’s better paint choices.

Look Grade: 10.10

This gun gets a perfect score because it deserves it. KWA has left nothing undone and this gun truly represents what a replica should look like.

Feel/Aesthetic

I’m not going to use the word solid. Not because it isn’t, but because that word is too overused and quite frankly doesn’t describe how this gun feels well enough. Even with the mag in and the stock extended you can shake all you want, you can’t hear a peep out of this thing. There’s no play, no wiggle, no nudges. This thing is a rock. Even the internals sit happily where they belong, not banging or rubbing against other parts. Also if you felt, like I did, the TM felt a bit flimsy, worry not with the KWA. The plastics used in this MP7 are unlike any other airsoft gun I’ve encountered and feel more reminiscent of the polycarb body on my FS2000 rather than any airsoft gun I’ve ever held. It really feels like a real gun. So much so it really gave me a smile the first time I shouldered it.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/Ranger_Captain/MP5/IMG_0576.jpg

The features on this MP7 are great as well. The stock, as mentioned, has no play. Fully extended it stays where you put and doesn’t shift side to side on your shoulder. Likewise the folding front grip snaps into each position solidly and feels just as sturdy as its fixed cousins.

The flip up sights are a great touch and like everything else on this gun are extremely solid and made to an excellent standard. Their fully adjustable in both positions and are truly useful when using this gun in its various states.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/Ranger_Captain/MP5/IMG_0597.jpg

The picture I’m getting, and you should to, is unlike many other brands who make a gun and let the people beta test it, KWA clearly put some serious work into this gun, making sure that it felt and sits the way one would expect a real gun to.

The RIS rails are bolted in place and were able to support me holding the gun by the attached flashlight on the side rails. Equally strong are the controls on the gun, the mag release being so stiff I couldn’t operate them with my shooting hand at first. The selector switch firmly snaps into each position and while no con in any way, I should note that on the right side of the gun it doesn’t correspond to well to what is actually selected, this being a flaw in the real version as well.

Internally this thing is a beast, everything moving smoothly and perfectly orchestrated while still clearly retaining a huge degree of strength and some room for expansion and contraction as gas guns tend to need. The bolt catch is beefy and a nice addition for this gun allowing for speedy mag changes.

The magazines are about the heaviest gas mags I’ve ever encountered. All metal and even sporting the fake holes for 30 and four round checks.

Feel Grade: 10/10
Aesthetics: 10/10

Again, perfect scores. This gun leaves nothing to be desired in feel or aesthetics as I can’t imagine that the real steel feels any more strong nore any feature was overlooked when creating this replica. I would be very interested in seeing the KWA laid down next to a real MP7 and see how easy it really would be to tell the two apart. I suspect without actually checking the magazine this would be a rather hard feet.

Shooting

This portion of the review to me is what’s greatest of all about this gun. This thing is the beast. I generally don’t like gas anything in airsoft due in large part to cost of weapon supplies (gas, mags, and upgrade parts are all MUCH more expensive than their AEG counterparts) but what little experience I have had with gas guns I must admit has been positive. Even still, the KWA blows all of them away.

I’ve never used a System 7 GBB yet but I do have the older KWA USP Full Size to compare this and to be honest, there is no comparison, the MP7A1 is miles ahead. Now I shoot real guns as part of my day job so while many users without that experience I find it hard to call this gun “realistic,” but then I find that true of all airsoft guns. That said for an airsoft gun, this little things got a heck of a kick. I would grade it slightly below the KWC CO2 Desert Eagle which is the hardest kicking GBB I’ve ever encountered.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/Ranger_Captain/MP5/IMG_0593.jpg

This holds true for accuracy as well. It’s not TM, laser line accurate but by far the most accurate GBB I’ve used, pistol or rifle or smg. I don’t have my laser rangefinder at the moment but off hand judging I would say 100 ft true accuracy with 115 with hopup on a torso sized target, that being with top green and .25g’s. A word on the range though, this thing drops like a stone once it hits its max range. Most airsoft guns, thanks to hop, have a more gradual drop in range, the MP7’s hopup may not function as well or something as once it gets to the 100-110 mark it steadily drops. This isn’t a con by any measure but it is something to keep in mind when trying to drop bb’s on a longer ranged target.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/Ranger_Captain/MP5/IMG_0592.jpg

ROF is nice, very nice. It isn’t the fastest though. A plastic slide G18C has a much higher rate of fire. I wouldn’t want to make a guess at a shot per second number but I can say it takes about 2 or 3 seconds to totally empty the magazine. That brings me to the magazine. I like really these mags. Their much easier to load than most GBB mags (no funky tool required) and hold quite a great deal of gas. So far I’ve been able to get just about 3 mags off, although the last half was sputtering and had a serious decrease in range. Cool down isn’t that big of a problem on semi-auto and on full I’d say it the last 10 or so rounds from a full mag that you start noticing any sort of FPS and range drop.

I really have no complaints from a shooting point of view on this gun, it does exactly what I would expect it to and more. About my only complaint is the fairly high FPS, easily over 350, which is the CQB limit on most fields I play, but I’m hopping after breaking in it takes a little bit of a dip to get it to the safe line.

Shooting Grade: 9/10
Accuracy Grade: 8/10
Range Grade: 8/10
Power Grade: 10/10
Use Grade: 7/10

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/Ranger_Captain/MP5/IMG_0623.jpg

Overall I’ll give this gun a shooting grade of nine out of ten since it’s such a beast. It’s above average in accuracy and range, well above average in FPS which brings its only downpoint in use since the FPS might be restrictive for most field uses.

Conclusion

Pros:
Tanklike build
Stock and grip have 0 play
H&K Trades :D
Did I mention its built like a tank?
Easy to work with
Very accurate
Great range for its size
Very powerful, almost too powerful…

Cons:
Magazines are tough to find
Shoots a little hot for some airsoft fields

Overall Grade: 10/10

It’s a rare time I say go out and buy something but trust me, go buy this gun. There is no better side arm possible and quite frankly I find this to be an even better primary than most GBBR’s. As soon as I shot this thing the first time I knew it was going to have a permanent placement on most of my kits. Hell, from the first time I held it I knew I wanted to use this as often as possible.

KWA has done it again. The praise given by me and other reviewers is truly deserved. The KWA MP7A1 is an unbelievable achievement in both replicating the MP7 and providing the user with a top notch firing platform.
